As far as I can remember, the majority of the veteran nations, if we're talking about Singerpurear, Tartford and maybe Quintessa, were all heavy pop voters more than any other genre. So I doubt pop doing well would have alienated them, I expect it was probably just a change in circumstances/passion for the contest.

Yeah, I’d agree. They’re all experienced members of Buzzjack so if they step away from the contest for a bit, or for good, it won’t be because they’ve forgotten about it or need a reminder - they’ve more likely just lost enjoyment from it.

Yes I'm sure they have their reasons (it's not like they've disappeared from the site entirely), in the immortal words of Hotlady 'that their option' at the end of the day, I just do think it's notable and a bit of a shame that we've gone from having a pretty consistent handful of nations who tended to often fill that particular niche to basically all of them being gone in such a relatively short timeframe. (Of course we still get retro entries from other countries, just not as consistently - this reminding me that still to this day I've only ever sent one song from pre-2000 to the main contest!)

The rise in popularity/frequency of sub 3 minute Spotify friendly music was always likely to be the death of Rolloland!! 🤣

The decline in BJSC participation isn’t surprising. Many members are older now with full-time jobs and life commitments, so missing contests shouldn’t be seen as a problem or a reason to ring the alarm bells 😂. Personally, I only enter occasionally when I have the time and tbh, I don’t enjoy the contest as much as I used to. For me, it is more about sharing songs I discover and finding new pop to enjoy casually.

There’s definitely 53 - I was having issues editing on my phone with it continually wanting to revert to previous drafts for some reason so someone will have been erased at some point

Participation numbers have always fluctuated up and down throughout the nearly 18 years of BJSC. It’ll continue to fluctuate regardless of what you do. As others say, people know where we are and we will be here for them when they have time in their busy schedules, or a banger they want to share, or just because they fancy it this month.

Rather have people here because they want to participate than feel like its an obligation or chore
