Posted September 26Sep 26 As this has been somewhat of a frequent topic of discussion lately (mainly because of my own pet peeves x), I thought it'd be interesting to compile a list of all the BJSC winning artists' previous entry positions (if any).I definitely felt that the current run of recycled former top 10 artists felt unusual and the stats do support that - we've currently had 5 of them in a row, when it had never previously happened more than 3 times in a row (BJSCs 135-137 and 164-166). Including Amelie Lens as well we're on a run of 6 recycled artists winning in a row which is the second longest such run ever, only beaten by a run of 8 in a row in BJSCs 118-125 (although worth noting that 2 of those 8 also included a non-recycled artist which cannot be said about the current run). It's not all bad news lately though - before this run of recycled winners, 4 of the last 5 winners had been first time entrants. So perhaps we are not doomed to recycled winners forever. xIn the list below I've bolded recycled artists and highlighted in red those who had a previous top 10 hit. To avoid getting too much into the weeds I've not counted as a recycle when artists were sent as solo acts after previously being sent as part of a group or vice versa (if I had done BJSCs 77-79 would be another three in a row of recycled top 10 artists as Malin had previously come top 10 as a member of Niki & The Dove).1 Britney Spears/Junkie XL - first entry2 Katharine McPhee - first entry3 The Chicks - first entry4 Sara Bareilles - first entry5 t.A.T.u. - first entry6 Beverley Knight - first entry7 Katy Perry - first entry8 Lily Allen - 2nd in BJSC 69 Margaret Berger - first entry10 Brandy - first entry11 Lenka - first entry12 La Roux - first entry13 Agnes - 9th in BJSC 1114 Uh Huh Her - first entry15 Röyksopp - 21st in BJSC 8, 18th in BJSC 1416 V V Brown - 7th in BJSC 10, 8th in BJSC 1417 Beautiful Small Machines - first entry18 Kesha - DNQ in BJSC 1419 Eva Simons - first entry20 Alphabeat - 8th in BJSC 821 The Dolly Rockers - 6th in BJSC 1922 Ellie Goulding - 15th in BJSC 13, DNQ in BJSC 2023 MARINA - 18th in BJSC 12, 13th in BJSC 14, 6th in BJSC 1624 Delphic - first entry25 Roll Deep/Jodie Connor - first entry26 Sheelah - first entry27 Eric Saade - 20th in BJSC 2328 Molly Sandén - first entry29 Zoë Badwi - first entry30 Adele - 12th in BJSC 631 Sheelah - 1st in BJSC 2632 Lykke Li - DNQ in BJSC 7, 26th in BJSC 13, DNQ in BJSC 21, 14th in BJSC 3033 Agnes Obel - DNQ in BJSC 1534 Charice - 28th in BJSC 2535 Chart Music - first entry36 Lana Del Rey - first entry37 Jessica Mauboy - 22nd in BJSC 11, DNQ in BJSC 22, 4th in BJSC 3038 Loreen - first entry39 Ricki-Lee - DNQ in BJSC 11, DNQ in BJSC 2340 Rachel Platten - first entry41 Foxes - first entry42 Emma Hewitt - first entry43 Dragonette - 14th in BJSC 2, 9th in BJSC 4, DNQ in BJSC 20, DNQ in BJSC 21, 34th in BJSC 2644 Ronya - first entry45 Woodkid - first entry46 Trentemøller/Ane Trolle - first entry47 TR/ST - first entry48 Unicorn Kid - 11th in BJSC 4049 Fibes, Oh Fibes! - 27th in BJSC 2150 Frida Sundemo - first entry51 Kate Boy - first entry52 Zara Larsson - first entry53 Carli - first entry54 Postiljonen - first entry55 Marcel Woods/Vanbot - Vanbot 3rd in BJSC 33, 15th in BJSC 43 (first entry for Marcel Woods)56 Ghost Loft - first entry57 Belanger - first entry58 Vaults - first entry59 The Kite String Tangle - first entry60 Cut Copy - first entry61 Indila - first entry62 SOHN - 19th in BJSC 5063 RuPaul - first entry64 RAM/Susana - first entry65 Hervé/Zebra Katz - Hervé DNQ in BJSC 62 (first entry for Zebra Katz)66 A. September 26Sep 26 An interesting stats dump there, thanks Brer!2/2 for the 'first entry' club *.* (but that will be in tatters if I end up winning this month xo albeit not with an artist who's had a top 10 lol)
September 26Sep 26 oh to be back in the 2012-2014 era when a new artist winning was pretty much the norm.To the point where I feel I remember Vanbot and SOHN winning as slightly unusual as they'd already had an entry, damnit!
September 26Sep 26 Try 0/0, but maybe someone's luck will change as we have had first time winners his year right?Maybe we could see a thread like this for past winning nations and patterns of wins.
September 26Sep 26 0/0 for me too!And while admittedly my best result of 2nd was with a recycle (GusGus), my next best results of 3rd and 4th were with first entry artists, and were beaten only by recycled artists.
September 27Sep 27 Nicolina may have been one of the lowest scoring winners of all time but at least she was inspired xxx
Tuesday at 05:283 days 1/4 first entry winners for me, but that’s only because spin offs weren’t counted 👀
Tuesday at 14:303 days 0/2 and would happily go 0/3 🌚I don't have an issue with recycled acts winning (obviously), but I do think it's less 'cheap' when it's a different era than their last entry. I wouldn't say a year between them is recent either. It's a little different when it's just the next single two months later — but sometimes a banger is a banger, so I get it 👀
Tuesday at 14:473 days 7/8 for me and the other one was me being extremely cheeky and sending Sheelah five contests after they had last won for me (the veto conditions back in 2011 were more extreme for songs picked off radio playlists and the 'release schedule', as well as well known artists, so songs that were maybe cheap in other ways e.g. former winners that were not otherwise known, tended to slip through). I would never usally do this (and certainly wouldn't have the gall to do it today) but the song sounded even bigger and better to me than the first song of theirs I had won with, and so it proved points wise.On the winning artists' past positions thing, I wouldn't be against artists who have come top five (maybe even top ten) being rested for a year, so at least their next eras could get underway before people try to send them again, because as I mentioned before the act already has a built-in fanbase that has been tested very recently, and if the song is from the same era as another hit it probably stands to reason it will do well because it's likely to have the same vibe, songwriters and production team. So people sending these songs have a headstart over everyone else, which is why so many I believe probably win. After a gap of a year or more then it's fair game to recycle them I think because eras, the music industry, production styles and BJSC tastes (and the makeup of competitors) tend to change a fair bit in the space of 12 months.Funnily enough, I think my entry this month is the first time I've recycled a previous top ten artist since I sent Delta Goodrem in BJSC 100. And like in that case, it's an act I sent myself first (plus they're not even the lead artist on it).
Wednesday at 21:241 day Author So, our options for the win this month to continue the streak of former top 10 artists winning are...Baleghde (Maria Becerra)FSR Rontvia (DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ)Herbilore (Alison Sudol fka A Fine Frenzy)Lotunia (Bianca)New Lexico (Maude Latour)République d'Áskorza (6euroneunzig)(and to continue the streak of recycled artists in general we could also have any of Aelandor (LØLØ), Altyr Muunilinst (MARIS), Cheiron (Sophie And The Giants), Cor Lupus (Zanias), Deandria (POiSON GiRL FRiEND), FARC (Moonchild Sanelly), Flynnonda (Cody Frost), Jadakissnia (Erin LeCount), Jupiterdonia (Sudan Archives), Kluminican Republic (Kai Bosch), Neliönoir (Isabella Lovestory), POPHub (Hunnygloss), Skall (Floating Points), Thelonia (John Summit) or Why So Sirius (JACKIE EXTREME))((note I am not posting any of this to discourage people from voting for these (and even more not to specifically encourage people to x), obvz as ever vote for whatever songs you all like the most, I just find this recent increasing trend quite interesting))Also honourable mention to Cumulonimbia (Jenny On Holiday) who had a previous top 10 as a member of Let's Eat Grandma.
