How come Elton is doing so well this year? Is he immune to the American influence on the playlists?

He's big in America with his xmas sangs, so he's hogh up their playlists

That's disappointing :( Amazon must be dplitting strrams between het and Gwen to be an even bigger draw for singers next year

I think the biggest mockery was when Katie Price topped that chart based on like 12 people downloading it as part of a campaign, and then she started telling anyone who'd listen that she was a number one popstar 🤦‍♂️

Isn’t it almost impossible for an Amazon Original Christmas song to climb above other Christmas songs over the course of the week?

I wouldn't say impossible but highly unlikely as it's never happened before

Gwen’s song dropping so much in the Christmas chart and then picking back up this week does sort of suggest Amazon threw everything at Kylie last week and aren’t quite so much this week. (Not that there’s anything wrong with them going hard for the Christmas #1 of course.)

Not to open this can of worms again, because I’m obviously glad that Kylie did get to No 1, but it still doesn’t sit right with me that Amazon can just prioritise Kylie (or whetever Christmas song they’re promoting that year) to the top of their ‘stations’ when someone asks to play Christmas Music.

I’m surprised that the OCC haven’t clamped down on ‘stations’ counting as streams yet. I can understand playlists as the song will only appear once but stations feel like Amazon can almost manipulate how many times they want a song to appear (as evidenced by the major increase in Gwen’s song this week)

Yes, that is exactly why Amazon is way different to regular playlisting. If a song is #1 on Spotify's Christmas playlist, it still will be played only once unless the user restarts the playlist. Whereas Amazon plays their exclusive track(s) several times among the Christmas classics. That is why we will never see a Spotify exclusive battling for #1.

I don't know if the OCC has any way (or will) to tackle that though. It would probably require them to exclude Amazon streams altogether.

Would also be interesting to know what Billboard would do about this if it was a thing in the US but somehow the Amazon exclusives never reach high on charts there. Gwen is now charting but nowhere near top 40. Maybe it's the combination of smaller market share at Christmas and the chart rules.

Unless a song grows organically, I think the only time this might possibly happen would be in the final chart this week, when we feel that other platforms will be underestimated for Thursday. But even that implies that Christmas Day streams are far more than double the average for the week.

Chart manipulation has been going on for decades I guess this is more visible.

The counter is though people still have to be actively using the service to get the stream count up - they can put in on as many playlists and autoplay as they like but if they don’t have the listeners they don’t have the streams.

I don’t think we’ll see an Amazon Christmas #1 as a regular thing though, Kylie has a unique fanbase and shifted nearly 20k in downloads and physicals (despite the price - £20 for the 12” and £13 for the 7”) and the YouTube video (2.5+ million views) shows there was an interest outside of it being an Amazon generated hit.

Really want Kylie to make it 2 weeks.

I can't be bothered seeing Wham in a few years getting the record for most weeks at number one by any song, because nothing else challenges.

Hopefully Kylie's #1 will ignite some passion into getting new songs in the mix.

I get the whole Amazon manipulation thing, although I don't find this too dis-similar from Spotify playing Wham/Mariah if you ask for Christmas songs.

Didn’t Ellie Goulding do it with ‘River’ - lower in the mids and then went to #1? (Could be wrong but just seem to remember her not being in contention for #1 initially).

I think there was only 1 set of mids and it did show “River” at #1, but people assumed it would be knocked off by Friday.
