It can often be unsatisfying when songs are really short... but which short songs do you think fill out their runtime well?

This thread was inspired by this coming on shuffle earlier as I love it despite clocking in at less than 2 minutes:

The White Stripes - Fell In Love With A Girl

Another one that comes to mind is the following, only 2:17 in length, but she throws the kitchen sink at it so I come away feeling satisfied:

ROSALÍA - SAOKO

  • 'Song 2' by Blur is the definitive answer to this question.

Always my go to whenever short songs are mentioned. Both great alternative tracks from the 00s and signify the decade.

Nice picks, have also just remembered two of my top 5 Beatles songs are really short:

Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)

Eleanor Rigby

Both barely over 2 minutes but so beautiful and haunting, respectively. 🖤

Love 'Fell In Love With A Girl' and 'Eleanor Rigby' ❤️

I remembered there being a UK Charts thread about short songs recently, around the time of 'Steve's Lava Chicken' *_* and I mentioned a few of my favourites there:

Oh wow I completely forgot about that, well, more free rein here in a world where the likes of 'SAOKO' haven't been hits x

Shocked I tell thee that 'The Ladies' Bras' hasn't been mentioned here yet tongue

This song somehow squeezes an entire satisfying song structure into less than 90 seconds:

('SAOKO' was also the first song to come to mind when I saw this being a thread so we stan it being mentioned in the OP xx)

F*** CHRIS BROWN

Also not technically a song in its own right officially but Beyoncé ate with this as the intro to Partition

Love the original Birthday Cake!

feels kind of on the nose to put a bunch of punk songs here bc they’re meant to be short and sweet, but i just wanted to highlight the second half of Jeff rosenstock’s album WORRY. bc it blows me away every time i listen. 9 songs, almost all under 2 minutes, all bleeding into each other into a kind of medley of different types of punk and alt: hardcore punk, ska, etc. and they all dovetail into the emotional core of the album, which is…just giving a f*** and letting yourself love in the face of unimaginable horror.

the album was released 10 years ago so it’s very of its time in that regard, very Trump 1.0, mid-10s #posi, and it’s really easy to feel jaded about it now, but the sentiments at the heart of the album still hold true even now, despite everything. and it includes the most affecting song Jeff’s ever written probably, “while you’re alive”. Jeff was the first show i went to after the pandemic and i shed tears when he played it. but anyway, i made a playlist of just the medley but the whole album is highly recommended:

“love is worry”

Oh there are probably many for me! The one I thought to share though is 'Way Down' by Tori Amos, captures something beautiful and subtle:
