Absolutely love Bad Romance, I think that'd be in my top 3 and close to #1 as well.

I don't think I've actually ever heard Killing In The Name, though I do remember following that #1 battle from here in Australia, it was iconic.

No shock here. After loving Leona and Alexandra I was a little disappointed with this one. I wanted Olly or Stacey to win, but in the end I think it all worked out well for Olly.

Looking forward to seeing @Iz様 🌟 with the 2010 countdown first though. :)

Killing In The Name is a song I absolutely loved on its initial release on their brilliant debut album. Powerful musically and lyrically it was one of my favourites of ‘93, as you mentioned I even remember the day it was played on the chart rundown uncensored by Bruno Brookes, thinking ‘they’re surely not gonna do this are they!?’ (someone obviously didn’t do their research properly). So what a joy it was to see the resurgence in 2009 albeit as in response to the X Factor domination and homogeny. I like to think at least some of its sales came from people who loved the song too, rather than just a protest vote. Also great to see a rock song at number one again.

Bad Romance is definitely my favourite Gaga song nowadays, but it wasn’t always the case. Grown to love it more over the years, but imagine if the extra songs on Fame Monster hadn’t happened and we never heard it? I think it’s rare for a ‘deluxe’ version (often in other artists hands they are songs rejected for the main album) to be so brilliant.

Fantastic work Jim, really enjoyed reading your commentaries and listening through the songs again. I’m very nervous having to follow you for 2013 but honoured to be asked to have a go, thanks @Julian_! Hope I can do it some justice!

1-3 really close - love all 3. A bad thing about 2009 was the massive use of the autotune in several songs - particularly in "Sexy Chick" and "Boom Boom Pow" it is so annoying.

Great rundown! Just Dance is about right I think, a great debut for Gaga who seemed to come out of nowhere to number one overnight, dance music was pretty exciting at the time. Bad Romance, although it also topped my charts, I didnt rate as much as Alejandro, Poker Face and Just Dance at the time, but it was huge in clubs, that hook was irresistible and euphoric. Top 5 for me though.

Which brings me to Rage Against The Machine. I appreciated the intent, but not the track which I'd never heard before that I recalled. Not a fan, and still wouldnt voluntarily play it. If only they'd picked a 70's classic metal track like Paranoid instead as the focus of the campaign....ah well, prob wouldnt have meant as much to 21st century downloaders.

Just been playing catch-up! 'Poker Face' is a great start to the top 5 and very meaningful to me as the song that kickstarted my Gaga obsession as an 11-year-old. I thought 'Just Dance' was fine, but watching the 'Poker Face' music video with its striking, now larger budget visuals, changed everything. I was mesmerised by this otherworldly lady and her playful, infectious hooks! A still from the music video was my first ever avatar on BuzzJack and I kept it for about 5 years. The song also reminds me of my late great grandma, who I was incredibly close with until she passed away in 2015, as she used to phonetically sing along to 'Poker Face' any time it came on the radio/music channels, bless her heart.

"I'm trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful" - smooth lol💀 I didn't care for Sexy Bitch/Chick/Chitch at the time and still don't rate the lyrics but agree that the production is well crafted; I appreciate that aspect of it more nowadays.

As aforementioned, 'Just Dance' wasn't the one to ignite my love for Gaga, but it's grown on me more over time and I agree the wacky, layered middle 8 is a particular highlight. 'Paparazzi' is my favourite The Fame single long term, with 'Poker Face' 2nd, this slotting in 3rd and 'LoveGame' 4th.

I'd say my taste didn't become a lot more alternative leaning until the mid-2010s, so I was a bit perplexed and overwhelmed by the sound of 'Killing In The Name' as a kid, but I absolutely love it now and find all of that vocal passion and guitar work enthralling. What an iconic chart story as well! I was gripped by the progress of the Facebook campaign at the time despite my brain not knowing how to process this very noisy challenger to the X Factor yet. I was born too late to remember most of the famous chart battles in history but am glad I can at least clearly recall this one in real time.

I'm delighted to read that 'Bad Romance' has come out on top here and revealed itself as your favourite Gaga song as it's the same for me on both counts! I was taken in by the fun sounds, themes and aesthetic of The Fame yet found myself even more captivated by the darker Fame Monster accompaniment; this extension of the project has aged so well. 'Bad Romance' revealed to me that Gaga was even more of a creative tour-de-force than I already thought. The music video is a work of art (I remember when it used to be the most viewed one on YouTube!) and musically I loved that it was still hooks aplenty from her, yet so intense and a real exploration of her vocal talent in more dramatic fashion. That French middle 8 still floors me every time! I didn't see Gaga live until 2022, as part of the Chromatica Ball tour, so it took a while to hear 'Bad Romance' in the flesh but I'm glad that was eventually ticked off - perfect pop for me.

Thank you Jim for rounding off the 2000s in style! I have enjoyed reading your opinions and analytical touches.

My own top 10 would look like this:

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRWECnySyyG0sGmwenAiQ-

01 Lady Gaga - Bad Romance

02 Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone

03 Lily Allen - The Fear

04 Lady Gaga - Poker Face

05 Rage Against the Machine - Killing In the Name

06 La Roux - Bulletproof

07 Dizzee Rascal & Armand Van Helden - Bonkers

08 The Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow

09 Lady Gaga - Just Dance (feat. Colby O'Donis)

10 David Guetta - When Love Takes Over (feat. Kelly Rowland)

It was a coin toss between David and Cheryl for that 10th place!

Sexy chick was definitely the worst thing in 2009 minimum 15 places lower for

Just dance was a perfect debut track id probably rank it higher than Bad romance

Killing in the name yeah it did its thing as a protest song but personally not for me again would be near the bottom

Bad romance another great Gaga track would still rank it very high but I think I prefer Just Dance that tiny bit more

Happy to see Gaga at #1! What a year 2009 was for her and one of my favourite chart years for following the charts and for number ones!

Meet me Halfway is my favourite Black Eyed Peas from their #1s of 2009 now although at the time the Leona stan in me was gutted she was blocked from another #1 a case of the X factor guest acts battling for the top spot! Leona could’ve done it had they performed on another show but we’ll never know?!

Always enjoyed The Fear as well but it’s a bit of a fluke for me as far as Lily goes as there isn’t much else from her that does anything for me.

Killing In The Name was a very different Christmas #1 I’ll give it that but not a track I’d opt to go for just for personal tastes more than anything. It was quite ironic how much X Factor helped to dominated singles #1s in Q4 but then the winner missed out on the Christmas #1 (I mean at least Joe got there In the end I remember that final live very well as I’m a South Shields boy and everywhere that was everywhere was live streaming that particular final and it was electric when Joe won… obviously Olly went onto much greater things as we’ll see In the coming years #1 rates)

I would say undoubtedly, that pushed them ahead but they could've helped Leona by releasing one of the many better options that album had (like 'Outta My Head') so they got what they deserved.

Screwing up that second album when it had such potential was a real shame, it could've panned out so differently for her.

Omg I fell so behind with this! Just caught up and can’t fault that number 1. wub BR has really stood the test of time and has so much packed into its 5(?) minutes. I probably would’ve ordered the other Gaga songs the same - though there’s not much between JD and PF for me.

I probably would’ve had the BEP singles in the opposite order though. Maybe BBP benefits from not being as overplayed as IGF but there’s something so annoyingly repetitive about the latter for me. lol

Thanks Jim - really loved reading your in-depth posts on each song. ❤️

Caught up with the last few, a good top 10 and excellent write-ups of them, don't think my rankings would look too dissimilar, but the Gaga ones would all be a few touches lower - just not really bothered about listening to any of her music as much as I once was, even Telephone which I'd always loved as my favourite still is, but overall still wouldn't rate it as highly. Killing In The Name probably my favourite number one of this year based on what it represented, if not my favourite song (though it wouldn't be far off, probably 3rd).

  1. Killing In The Name

  2. Bonkers

  3. I'm Not Alone

  4. Sexy Chick

  5. The Fear

  6. Run This Town

  7. I Gotta Feeling (about 10 places higher than I once would've, actually sounds good to hear now)

  8. When Love Takes Over

  9. Boom Boom Pow

  10. Bad Romance
