Oh it should be subjective, much more interesting to see how you rank them rather than list what you think other people may want to see ☺️

Love is All Around is okay for what it is, but not something I’d ever seek out - same evaluation I’d give the other mammoth film soundtrack hits from the first half of the 90s. I wouldn’t rank it last

Yeah - it took some time for several tunes from club hit to chart hit at that time. Just take "Set Me Free", which was first released in 92 as white label, but took 3 years to become a Top 2 hit.

Haddaway's hits are great apart from I Miss You.

Motiv 8 - Rockin' For Myself is a great tune and was entered into BJSC!

Slo Moshun - Bells Of N.Y is one of the most interesting piano house tunes.

My No.2s rank:

  1. Ace Of Base - The Sign

  2. Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You

  3. Let Loose - Crazy For You

  4. Kylie Minogue - Confide In Me

  5. Crash Test Dummies - MMM MMM MMM MMM

  6. MC Sar & The Real McCoy - Another Night

  7. Corona - The Rhythm Of The Night

  8. All-4-One - I Swear

  9. Bon Jovi - Always

  10. Bruce Springsteen - Streets Of Philadelphia

  11. Big Mountain - Baby I Love Your Way

  12. Toni Braxton - Breathe Again

  13. Red Dragon - Compliments On Your Kiss

  14. Stone Roses - Love Spreads

  15. Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart & Sting - All For Love

A far better list, probably 7 of my favourite songs of the 90s, and I like 8-10 a lot too.

I enjoy all your top 5 for the number 2s, although that's criminally low for the classic Streets of Philadelphia! I have a soft spot for Mmmm Mmmm..., Crazy For You and I Swear as well, cheesy as they are. Agreed that it's a much better list than the number 1s like most 90s years were.

Other favourites from the rest of the top 40:

Youssou N'Dour & Neneh Cherry - 7 Seconds

Prodigy - No Good (Start The Dance)

Blur - Boys & Girls

New Order - True Faith 94

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away

Pretenders - I'll Stand By You

Oasis - Live Forever

Cranberries - Linger + Zombie

Atlantic Ocean - Waterfall (can't remember if you were in BJSC last year when I sent this?)

Nightcrawlers - Push The Feeling On (to be Top 10 in '95)

Strike - U Sure Do (peaked at #4 in 1995 on re-release)

Dr. Dre - Nothin' But A G Thang

A lot of big favourites there <3 1994 was very poorly represented by its number 1s it seems.

Speaking of, Saturday Night I think is my favourite to drop since, not my usual bag but a really fun, catchy song that is still really enjoyable. I am pleased Stiltskin got to number 1 because it was the only time a grunge related song got there and that was a key 90s movement (Idk if Babylon Zoo's Spaceman counts as well x), saying that, I agree with dandy that I like it when I hear it but can never quite remember it, a shame the genre wasn't represented better at the top.

D:Ream consist of singer Pete Cunnah and DJ/Producer Al Mackenzie. "Things Can Only Get Better" was initially released in January 1993, where it had mediocre success peaking at #24. The re-release in January 1994 stormed the charts and stayed 4 weeks at #1. It is an excellent euphoric house banger and I always loved it. The first out of 3 10/10 #1's from 1994 for me. D:Ream had further and landed 11 more top 40 hits. Their second top 10 hit "U R The Best Thing" (reaching #4 on re-release in April 1994, originally released in 1992) is my favourite D:Ream song thanks to the excellent Sasha Mix.

I suppose the idea behind D:Ream was have them as an actual band who could perform live unlike most dance in the mid 90s on TOTP that was performed by singer and dancers.

It also probably had lots of crossover appeal at the time for those who remember upbeat euphoric disco/new wave like it in the late 70s and early 80s.

I like Things Can Only Get Better.... but 'U R The Best Thing' (Perfecto Radio Mix) is better for me as it has a great euphoric backing vocalist in the chorus.

I really liked it at the time (and had bought U R The Best Thing back in 1992 or 1993 so it was nice seeing them get success) but these days I'd rate it a bit lower as I find it a little irritating. It's okay but I'd never choose to play it.

This is the one I've never had a strong opinion on, as it was #1 for the first few Top 40 shows that I tuned into and I've not really considered it outside of that context. It's OK I suppose, but I wouldn't specifically choose to play it either so I don't think I'd rate it this high for the year.

I find it very corny these days, maybe ever since it was appointed as the official soundtrack for cheering us all up by every TV programmer going in the 90s (and New Labour's use of course).

U R The Best Thing though is one of my favourite songs of the 90s, a masterpiece.

U R The Best Thing is the jewel in the crown but this was singalong fun until New Labour grabbed it then it got annoying and overplayed. It's pretty good pop, and more memorable than a lot of their decent follow-ups, now long-forgotten sadly.

Uplifting song which like many others I really love but felt it was a bit soured after being hijacked by New Labour.

And also stared sometime particle physicist Brian Cox on keyboards.

Tinman - Eighteen Strings is great fun too - mix of 90s indie and dance!
