I’m not sure I prefer it to the original, but I do like Madonna’s version. It’s nowhere near as bad as people made out at the time.

Shalala Lala is a dreadful song and it shows steam was beginning to run out for Vengaboys. It was nowhere near as fun as the previous singles or even the one that came after.

I've just done a re-listen to to Vengaboys after that and Sha la la la la la isn't quite as good as I remembered. 😂 It's ok but actually I'm digging We're going to Ibiza!

'Sitting Down Here' I used to think was by Emma Bunton as it really sounds like her.

But listening to it now, its another big country-influenced hit and one that still gets plays on MOR radio.

Regarding William Orbit producing consecutive number 1s - Pure Shores and American Pie.

 

This was the 18th time in Uk chart history that the same producer has produced consecutive number 1s.  

 

Of those 18 times, 5 of those were producers who produced 3 number 1s in a row.

I know it's much maligned but I also do really like Madge's version of 'American Pie'.

That Vengaboys track is immensely tacky but I love it!

Incredibly dull song from Mariah Carey.

I only bought one single that week, and it was Mariah Carey. One of my favourite songs of the year and from her, two remixes are great, the Stargate mix pushed in the UK and the Make It Last remix on the CD single which was basically a completely different song (like a J.Lo remix in that regard). The version performed on TOTP was for some reason the album version/US pushed mix, which has much more plodding production than the Stargate mix.

I don't love or hate American Pie, it's fine, nice production but a pretty pointless cover for me, although my sister bought it that week along with Pure Shores (obviously a William Orbit fan at 9 years old) to listen to on the plane (when Gatwick had a mini HMV in the airport...) as we went to Tenerife this week, my first ever time on a plane (we had previously gone to France by ferry). I also bought a CD that day called The Best Pepsi Chart Album In The World...Ever! 2000 which featured a fair few from this chart.

Bye Bye Bye, Won't Take It Lying Down (Naima lol) and Sitting Down Here all great pop songs, a brilliant week for the genre. Shalala Lala is also fun for me, very different to their other singles so I'm surprised it even did as well as it did, quite a schlager really, you could well imagine it playing in bars in the alps, with the accordian and video with the lederhosens.

I shall refrain from commenting on the other debut in the top ten, I always disliked it anyway.

Some more pop debuts outside the top 10 in Northern Line (so cheesy) and Madasun (this is strong and was in the end of year top 40 in Australia, where it peaked at No.6, deserved a little better here really). Also Everything by Dum Dums, a pre-Busted boyband with guitars a few years too early, all of their singles were strong and catchy and deserved more but the market wasn't ready for that sound yet.

A nice garage song entered lower down too, Colour Girl's Can't Get Used To Losing You.

These two songs right here are why I loved this era. I swear I heard Shalala Lala on a kiddy ride inside of an video game arcade down Barry Island at some point. Nevertheless, these were fun times, and Lene Marlin's song is instantly recognisable!

This is where Chris Cowey's approach of repeating the same God damn songs for weeks on end, even as they were going down the chart, was to the detriment of the show long-term, especially on weeks like this that were bountiful with new entries.

Madasun "Don't You Worry" was one such casualty of his booking policy. One of the better songs launched by one of the better new girl groups in 2000 (and there'll be a lot of them to come).

Honeyz - "Won't Take It Lying Down". What an absolute banger that was. The performance was absolutely unhinged though on account of Naima grinning away like H from Steps through what it is supposed to be a sassy and edgy put down to a cheating boyfriend type song whilst wearing a Gimp mask before the watershed on BBC One. Camp of the highest order. I'd have loved to have been in on the wardrobe fitting for that performance 🤣

On a slightly sadder note, timely that not one but two William Orbit produced singles were on this episode. I actually do still quite like "American Pie", it's much better than it is generally given credit for and the production on Madonna's version is gorgeous.

In the closest race for the No 1 spot so far in 2000 just over a thousand copies separated the top two but in the end Madonna couldn’t hold on. “American Pie” is bumped 1-2 (74,246) and instead it’s Chicane and Bryan Adams who are celebrating with “Don’t Give Up” moving 75,470 copies to arrive at the top, it isn’t the first time that Nick Bracegirdle (the guy behind Chicane) and Adams have collaborated after the producer made over Adams’ track “Cloud No 9” last year to give the Canadian a top 10 single. Whilst it’s a first No 1 for Chicane it marks a second time at the top for Adams who spent 16 weeks at the top nine years ago- with the merry go round that is the charts these days that’s unlikely to be repeated with this track.

Written by Randy Newman and originally recorded by Eric Burdon & The Animals in 1968, “Mama Told Me Not To Come” is more famous in the version by Three Dog Night in 1970 which made No 3 here but topped the US charts. Tom Jones now plucks his version from his comeback album “Reload” and drags in the Stereophonics to help him out on the track, it was launched at last month’s BRITS awards were they performed it and it now becomes a hit at No 4 (56,000), a fourth top tier hit for Stereophonics but a 17th for Jones and his biggest for 13 years!

A new Five single is normally a big deal with the last four all debuting in the top two and the last “Keep On Movin’” becoming their first chart topper. It’s surprising therefore that the follow up “Don’t Wanna Let You Go” can only debut at No 9 (32,000), it’s an 8th top 10 single and keeps their run intact but the group must be disappointed with the show and pay the price for not promoting the song at the BRITS and choosing a Queen collaboration instead.

All Saints drop 2-3 (65,000) as the track cumulatively sees sales hit 530,000, and there’s a climber (unusually these days) for Lene Marlin 6-5 though she loses sales to 43,000. In fact she swaps with The Vengaboys 5-6 (39,000), meanwhile Artful Dodger fall 4-7 (34,000) as NSync rush by 3-8 (33,000) and Puff Daddy and R Kelly round us off 8-10 (30,000).

It opens with the smallest total of any of her four solo hits to date but Geri Halliwell proves that if you’re hot then you’re hot, her new single “Bag It Up” is another track that got a substantial shot in the arm after it was performed at the BRITS where she emerged form between a giant pair of legs to grab some headlines. The song sold a mighty 106,000 copies to crush the opposition and that despite the parent album moving 15-11 having already sold over 400,000 copies. It also gives her a 10th feature on a No 1 (if you count her 7 with the Spice Girls) making her the woman with the most appearances at No 1 in chart history and she’s also the first female soloist ever to score three straight No 1 hits.

The track itself features backing vocals from 80s popstars Pepsi & Shirlie.

“All The Small Things” marks the breakthrough of Blink 182 though they’ve been going since 1995, the only one of their previous releases to make our charts was the last single “What’s My Age Again?” which nipped into the top 40 at No 38 last October thanks in part to some minor controversy for its semi-nude video. This time around the boys are parodying several boyband promos which encouraged considerable MTV support and saw the song reach No 6 stateside, it does even better here running Halliwell close (if only initially) for the top spot as it slides in at No 2 (62,000), their third album “Enema Of The State” responds in kind soaring to a new high 42-21.

Now a hit in a fourth version (and a making the top 10 on all occasions) “Killer” is back in our charts. Of course the song was written by Adamski and Seal back in 1990 when it spent a month at the top before returning in a solo Seal version a year later (#8) and then two years later was part of the “Five Live EP” when it made No 1 again this time for George Michael/ Queen/ Lisa Stansfield. Now trance act ATB have released their version as their third single and it bounds in at No 4 (48,000), the vocals here are from Drue Williams, incidentally no other song has been in the top 10 in 4 different versions within a 10 year period.

Usually a feature on singles Dr Dre is finally the lead name on a top 10 hit this week, previously he’s been in the top flight as the guest rapper on hits by Eminem, 2Pac, and Blackstreet as well as with his production work. “Still D.R.E” is co-written by Jay Z and officially credits Snoop Dogg, in so doing it gives the controversial rapper his biggest hit to boot, but the promo for the track awards cameo’s to Eminem, Warren G, and Shaquille O’Neal, Dre’s a popular guy obviously. The single is new at No 6 (42,000) and is the lead track to his “2001” album which has already been available for 3 months but reaches a new peak of No 31 this week.

Last week’s best seller by Chicane & Bryan Adams drifts 1-3 (57,000) and former chart toppers from Madonna and All Saints also see declines 2-5 (46,000) and 3-7 (35,000). Lene Marlin dips 5-8 (35,000), The Stereophonics & Tom Jones relent 4-9 (31,000) and Vengaboys slide 6-10 (25,000).

I was about to say it's common knowledge that Five all hate "Don't Wanna Let You Go" 🤣 Can't say I blame them really, it was never one of my favourite singles of theirs either. I feel like that slot as a single should have gone to either "Battlestar" or "Two Sides To Every Story" from the Invincible album.

Yep thats the good version of ATB - Killer there are two versions on youtube the other I don't really like. I do slightly prefer the production to the original Adamski and Seal track which was a bit slow in comparison. Its a great song anyway in both forms.

Chicane and Bryan Adams Don't Give Up is a very nice song too. Calvin Harris's riff in Blessings really sounds like the buildup bit of the song. But Don't Give Up's riff is more complex so that makes it better.
