first look chart is fairly meaningless as it is so to give it even more airtime than the actual final chart…

So on one hand music will get played that won't be there come Friday but on the other, its kinda pointless

I don’t care. The Big Top 40 never really had much credibility as is but especially now they’re constantly letting AI slop chart & capital is even now playlisting it. It’s a joke and I hope this causes some serious competition

Yeah this is kinda how i feel tbh. I can’t say I’m not intrigued though

They obviously miss the traditional slot the chart show was pre-2015 so this is the compromise.

Seems a bit counterintuitive to have the first look one be 3 hours when things always change during the week and the final one on Friday is only 1.45 hrs. Even the big top 40 is dragged out they play all of the previous weeks top 10, then do the top 40 and all that with ads & interviews in between so not sure how it’s gonna work on radio 1 tbh.

Maybe they want to show more new releases that are front loaded early in the week and sometimes drop out. I'd say that they may want to promote new music further down the chart but I don't think the chart show has much of an influence

Is the first look chart generally "fresher" before all the long time hoggers climb by Friday?

Yes its meaningless overall and makes no sense but I suppose it gives songs that wouldnt make the chart some exposure I guess

One other chart related change is that James Cusack will be leaving Radio 1.

I preferred James presenting the chart show when he covered for Jack so I wonder who will be the chart show cover from September.

I imagine it’ll just wind up being Lauren now 🤔

To be fair I rarely have much to do around then on a Sunday anyway so I'll be tuning in!

This does feel a little odd, but I am imagining it's to rival the Big Top 40 and to claim back the charts. The Big Top 40 advertised as the UK's Biggest Chart Show, so this will potentially get that back to Radio 1 and the official charts.

I quite often listen to the Big Top 40 when travelling back from a weekend away, so I would rather go to the First Look instead when this happens.

The amount of people also who think that the No.1 on the Big Top 40 is the official one... That will possibly now change to them thinking that if a song on the R1 charts on a Sunday is No.1 then that's the official one instead.

And the fact it’s not even really 2 days worth as the majority of platforms will have only shared their Friday data by that point 😅

Maybe it will be a top 100 show? They can just play new entries/re-entries/newer songs from the top 100 and skip all the ones that have been chatting for ages already.

Although I think more likely it'll just be a regular day-time Radio 1 show with a section within it for the chart.

Also, legally the Big Top 40 Show is allowed to advertise itself as the most-listened chart show as long as it continues to beat the Radio 1 chart show in audience. Radio 1 doesn't really have a chance of beating Heart AND Capital and a bunch of other smaller stations combined on any day of the week (unless the audiences of these stations have collapsed since I last looked?). Maybe they could air the chart show simultaneously on both Radio 1 and Radio 2, those combined could have a big enough audience potentially.

This is just to compete and stamp their mark with as the official charts against the Big Top 40 IMO.

I don't think there's much we can do about that. It's on the individual to do their own research if they care that much about what's really officially #1 like all of us here did. Radio 1 do specify they are the official charts and a lot of the newspapers mention it too when talking about music charts, and of course Wikipedia, AI, etc, will tell people that, so that all helps a bit.

But yeah, I've also met people claiming the #1 on the Big Top 40 Show is THE #1. I've also met people saying the iTunes #1 was THE #1 back in the day. There's probably people thinking what's #1 on the Spotify charts is the current #1. Probably a few out there who think the Billboard Hot 100 is the official UK chart. But really whether it's Global, Apple, Spotify, Billboard, they are not obligated to have constant announcements specifying that their charts aren't the official UK chart.

Likewise on BuzzJack we are allowed to publish our multi-chart. If there are people out who are silly enough to think it's the official UK chart, it's not our problem, I don't think any of us have claimed anywhere it is the official chart.

The world would be a better place if the Buzzjack Multichart was the real chart though tbf x

welp rip the absolutely useless life hacks show. unless they wanna extend the actual chart too i genuinely don’t see any point to this. Big Top 40 is boring anyways so not mad at this.
