Theres a difference between not knowing and not hearing though , i couldnt tell you half of the songs they play on work radio doesnt mean I havent heard them

I wonder if it's a matter of hearing Rein Me In without actually knowing you have heard Rein Me In.

For example, the song was removed from the R1 playlist almost a year ago and if you're passively listening to Spotify and it comes on, it passes you by without knowing what it's called or who is singing it.

So suddenly this song is in the public eye because of breaking the record and a small number of people who don't usually follow the charts but comment of news-worthy stuff say, "Never heard of it", but actually it's always quietly been there?

I mean from a brief glance that first tweet I quoted is from a journalist who’s written for Vogue and GQ so I don’t think it’s a case of “back in my day…”. Also this is a chart forum so I can understand people being biased in favour of the song but for a 19 week #1 it’s hard to deny the awareness of it is shockingly low.

I think it sums up how distanced people are from the charts - they are assuming they should know it word for word because of how big it’s been (if you don’t listen to the chart countdown or follow OCC socials there is nowhere else the official charts are in your face) - my nieces and nephews would have no clue (or care) who’s charting where, they have their Spotify playlists and favourite artists - they listen to them regardless of if they got to #1 or #151.

I’m sure your average GP couldn’t name 2-3 number ones from the past few years.

I don’t think awareness is shockingly low but out of a population of 60+ million there will always be a sizeable chunk of people who have no clue/interest/awareness.

I’m a chart fan and follower and couldn’t tell you how The Subway, Dasies, Survive, or Manchild go, would be easy for me to comment ‘I don’t know it’ but I’ve definitely heard them they just passed me by.

RMI and other songs for some people will be big moments and for others it’ll be a ‘I don’t know her’ Mariah moment.

For someone that hates the song so much you spend a considerable amount of time commenting on social media posts about it and talking about it in real life - that promo you’re doing is more than Sam and Olivia

People always come out of the woodwork to say "I've never heard this song" when there's a long runner, in the UK or the US. People say it like it's something to brag over when to me, it just looks obtuse - give it a listen, it could be your new favourite song! (whether it's about Rein Me In in the UK, Choosin' Texas in the US, or anything else)

This - Was just about to say the Billboard chart social posts are filled with exactly the same comments for Choosin’ Texas.

So true. There's a couple of posts with a lot of interaction on Twitter at the minute doing the same for Choosin' Texas because she just broke records set by Mariah and Whitney so fans of those artists are giving the "like if you've never heard this song" posts.

Music isn't consumed in the same way, if you aren't listening to radio, you have to go out of your way to select songs to listen to, so of COURSE you haven't heard a song if you've chosen not to broaden your tastes, listen to new music releases or work your way through the charts available on different platforms.

Maybe now's not a good time to admit that I've never knowingly listened to "Rein Me In"... It hasn't popped up on my Spotify on autoplay either as I have 0 scrobbles of the song on last fm for both versions!

Mariah solo record is 14 weeks , her most weeks is 16 with boyz to men (non holiday)

Your obsession with Christmas songs overtaking all these records needs to stop!

And the “record” in question is most weeks at #1 for a female led non-holiday single (it overtook I Will Always Love You and We Belong Together’s 14 weeks apiece).

Now whether or not you class that as a record is another matter altogether.
