I think they hoped fans would buy it twice. Also at the start, it often took a few weeks for new releases to climb up the download chart.

A change in chart rules encouraged the practice too - they allowed songs to chart 1 week prior to the physical release. This was to appease the retailers who were worried about having gaps in their top 40 chart racking if the chart was full of download only singles.

At the time it created a build up of demand and excitement. It clearly worked in this instance.

the funnier part of this was when unofficial "covers" of songs which had been released to Airplay but weren't yet available for purchase would chart due to built-up demand for the originals - off the top of my head Payphone had a #49 peak for "Dreem Team" and the "cover" of T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever) by "Kings Of Pop" actually made it into the top 40(!) cheeseblock

(On Air On Sale was generally the industry standard by the mid-late 2010s)

The Precision Tunes version of 'Payphone' went all the way to #9 lol what a time to be alive *_*

missed that one somehow 💀

wonder if Radio 1 actually played these crappy bootlegs on the chart show or just played the originals in their place? (tbf both versions of T.H.E. are horrific monstrosities so I'm not sure the original'd be an improvement there x)

They definitely played the Maroon 5 original on the chart show when Precision Tunes went top 10!

hopefully Rachel Chinouriri can hold onto the top ten at least by Friday! wonder what Fontaines' margin of lead is at the top - wouldn't be shocked if they cleared 100k by the end of the week.

Very low for Zach Bryan. I guess it having only 8 songs hurts a bit.

#10 for Zach might seem low when he had three tracks in the top 40 yesterday, but that's actually pretty decent considering he only has five tracks contributing to his streaming units (the three best-performing tracks are not counted) and he hasn't released any physical copies (something which occurs often with his releases - he only gave his 2022 EP Summertime Blues a physical release this year!)

Interesting title for Zach Bryan's album! lol

definitely makes sense why he had the Lana collab considering it's very much in the same vein as her album titles!

No physicals too, it's only officially an EP though.

The Tears For Fears, Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd and George Michael re-entries in the album chart are due to National Album Day vinyl pressings if anyone was curious

Also dissapointing for Ashe not to be in Top-40 and is great album

what happened?

Disappointing for Ashe not to be top 40

not surprising - Stop The Wedding!'s streams won't be counting towards its performance and the rest of the album isn't streaming well nor does she have a particularly large fanbase to boost her pure sales

(kind of a shame though, the album seems pretty solid from what I've heard from it)
