Surely we've had more million sellers this decade than we ever had in the 90s?

Singles wise that is incorrect.

So far this decade there have been 10 million selling singles - 4 of them by reality acts and 2 charity singles.

So far the 90's gave us the most million selling singles of any decade - 29. Next nearest was the 70's with 17.

You can see a listing of all 83 million selling singles since 1952 HERE

Also Radio stations in America are now awful so that it is a rarity for a non Urban/Rap track to top the Billboard charts; whilst Radio 1 have been similarly uninspired adopting the cancer of the decade.

I agree and as R1 has gone the same was as the US. Ramming RNB/Hip-Hop down our throats.

When are they going to go for some of the good stuff from mainland Europe. Some of their pop isn't much to write home about but they sure have the best Rock and Dance acts and have had for the past 15 years.

Kylie passed a million with Can't Get You Out Of My Head as did Bob The Builder's Can We Fix It...and yep Tony Christie passed a million too :)

Oops - forgot those two. As well as Shayne Ward. Still not good though, is it, if we've had so few million selling singles that we run out of them before we run out of fingers?

Interestingly, the decade musically has gone a similar way to the 90s:

Early decade: Pop and dance

Mid decade: Indie, Rock

Late decade: Singer/songwriter, Dance

Although both decades have RnB, girlbands and boybands through it....

The noughties has been the most faceless decade yet - every single sub-scene has been suffocated within months by stacks of copycat acts and those who created the sub-scenes don't seem to have the talent to go on and start the next, they just fizzle out while those who copied them come in with a safer, more commercial sound that isn't all that different to what's already out there. Despite the apparent different genres out there, what gets into the pop charts is virtually one of four or five homogenized styles. There are few surprises any more due to the nature of promotion.

Kudos to Sugababes for surviving the decade thus far though - in their business it's very hard to stay alive.

Yeah the 00's have been faceless. There is no single thing to remember them by. But there HAS been variety. Although i wouldn't really be able to comment pre 2003 so i dunno.

interestingly I've just compiled a tracklist of the 100 most 'classic' tracks of the decade for various reasons e.g. big sellers, long running No.1's, well remembered songs etc...I will burn the CD off on December 31st next year and I'm sure I will be making some amendments as we get some hopefully massive hits in the next two years :)

Thats an amazing tracklist. Id buy it :D and i hope something similar arrives at the end of the decade.

I disagree somewhat here - For the the last 10 years the UK music scene has been dominated by Hip-Hop and RNB. Though other genres have glanced the scene on occasion, no other genre has dominated. IMO it's time for a change, what we need now is a trance/techno and country come-backs.

A trance revival would be great. A 2004 dance music revivial in 2012 or something would be even better (seems to have died a lot, we need another United Nations- Out Of Touch or Eric Prydz- Call On Me, 2004 was the best year for music imo, so many orgasm quality songs :P )

I still think that 2000's has been an ok decade for sales. Sales have gone down in the top 5 but a number 1 would sell more now this year than 2000 because their chart run would be so much longer and make up for it. Sales wise the end of this decade can be summed up by being very drawn out. Sales are low but consistent. Also by the time you get to around #75 sales haven't really gone down. They might have even gone up this year.

I disagree. I don't really know much about US radio but Radio 1 DOES playlist a variety of stuff. You can find all the top 3 genres represented by at least 3 songs most weeks on their playlist. Its just a shame that Specialist/Indie is a bit weighted. Its a shame also that Radio 1 support is VITAL for a top 5. Not a single song has gone top 10 without r1 support, excluding long running word of mouth promotion Nickelback and Chav supported Basshunter, and fan based sales Wet Wet Wet. Without filling one of those 4 categories, i think a top 10 hit is impossible. Without filling one of those 4 categories, or strong videoplay or belonging to a genre that doesn't require so much promotion and airplay (Indie- not the R1 sort) i think a top 40 hit is difficult too.

You really think that Dance has been dominant late decade? I hope you're right :D

Its having a revival - I think it will pick up into next year too!

i agree, with the '08 editions and Basshunter sitting at number 1 for 5weeks,

plus the emergence of cascada

it might pick up but I think the late 90s were pop and dance, not really singer songwriter stuff.

And Radio 1 plays too much indie-rock, not really R&B. It sounds like i'm listening to XFM sometimes.

I'm hoping the whole reality tv show fad will have died down by the end of the decade. It's not as bad as 2002/2003 when you got to release utter trash if you finished bloody 15th or whatever.

Personally the artist hightlights of this decade for me have been

My Chemical Romance

Delta Goodrem

Avril Lavigne

Sugababes [whoever's in the lineup they make awesome pop music. best girlband of the decade]

Evanescence

P!nk

Nelly Furtado

There's also been some great songs that will be classics for years to come not nessercarily to me 'Umbrella', 'Whenever Wherever', 'Hung Up', 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' to name a few.

But I do agree with what a lot of people have said. A lot of the songs that have sold loads have been $h!tty charity/reality tv/novelty stuff. I think Kylie is the only song to sell a million copies that doesn't fall into any of those catergories.

You really think that Dance has been dominant late decade? I hope you're right :D

I think they could be right! This decade has stood out for dance music for me i think! We have had, DJ Sammy, Scooter, Cascada, Basshunter, Eric Prydz, Angelcity, being some of the most noteable and most popular, plus many many more! The ones in bold have emerged from 2004 onwards! I love dance music! and IMO it has been getting better and better! :D

Yeah, dance music has to make a comeback sooner or later but I don't see why it should be the same high-pitched, cheesy rubbish that killed it off that resurrects it. Can't we have some intelligent dance music crossing over?

Actually the most succesful genre this decade in the UK has been pop, followed by rock.

What does everyone class as pop??

Because bands like Kasabian, Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic Monkeys etc... I would have put in the indie genre but when ive read interviews and what not theyve all said something along the lines of 'We're a band, and we do what is popular today'

To me every genre goes to pop! Like Nickelback, Rock/Pop or Cascada Dance/Pop

Please tell me what you would class as pop!

for me I don't class pop as popular, I see it as a genre. I'd say Britney, Kylie, Dido, Duffy, James Blunt, Alphabeat, etc as pop.

Ive just realised... Youve missed 'The Calling - Wherever You Go' :o!

What does everyone class as pop??

<pedant>

Whatever's popular at the mo, since "pop" is short for "popular".

</pedant>

Something that I'll remember the 00s for (at least the middle part) - the introduction of downloads into the chart, therefore getting rid of most boy bands (save Westlife, McFly and Take That) and girl groups (save Girls Aloud and the Sugababes).

Well Kaisers are on Polydor and make brilliant pop music so they're a pop band! Arctic Monkeys are on an Indie label and make Indie music so they are an Indie band but of course like EVERY band they're a pop band. Then again even Franz Ferdinand who are on the same label as the Arctics see themselves as a 'pop band' and why not? Would you call The Beatles or The Who 'Indie' bands now because they had guitars? As I said Indie is becoming a tag for major labels to put on their watered down versions so they seem 'cool' and they've even started putting them together now *cough*OneNightOnly*cough* as they don't make money out of putting together boy bands anymore.

Like you said every genre goes to pop!

Thats what i think! but Kasabian have actually said before that they are a 'Pop Band' i was like WTF?

Kasabian? No. Monkeys? No. Franz? No. Feeling, Hoosiers, Maroon 5, Scouting For Talent? Yes. Kaisers, Razorlight, Kooks? Borderline.
