September 12, 200816 yr Bring It To Life was never a big shock for me, as I knew it was a dead cert for #1 before it was released, and I was right.
September 12, 200816 yr Bring It To Life was never a big shock for me, as I knew it was a dead cert for #1 before it was released, and I was right. again it might not be a shock to some but like i said those ones were the ones that suprised me :o
September 12, 200816 yr Robyn "With Every Heartbeat" Such a pleasant surprise, my happiest #1 ever ^_^
September 12, 200816 yr oh I remember the most obvious one: Atomic Kitten - Whole Again :o I was sure it would go low top 20 only and I was amazed when I read on teletext that it was heading for No.1 because all of their previous hits had gone low top 10/top 20! And that ended up being the 10th best selling song of the 21st century so far hasn't it? Such an average song. I guess Leona Lewis Bleeding Love was quite a shock to me because I read a poll somewhere and it was something like who would be number 1 next week, Take That or Leona and Take That had about 70% of the votes orsomething like that. So until I heard Leona was number 1 in the mids I was like :o I thought Take That would get it. Take That beating McFly was a surprise to me, i thought Leona had it definately, and she did. Bring It To Life was never a big shock for me, as I knew it was a dead cert for #1 before it was released, and I was right. Same. I thought Estelle was the most surprising of the year, followed by the Ting Tings and Mint Royale and Kings Of Leon. 4 surprise #1's, a lot imo.
September 12, 200816 yr My Chemical Romance, Katie Melua, Kings Of Leon, Robyn...yeah all surprises. Not sure tATu and Leona belong in that category though, they were marked as #1s as soon as they hit the airwaves. For me; Pink - Just Like A Pill I'd thought top 10 was a possibility, but it was the 3rd release of the album and I don't remember there being as much hype about it as there was over Get The Party Started. Roger Sanchez was one I didn't see coming back in 2001, and LeAnn Rimes back in 2000.

September 12, 200816 yr Kings of Leon isnt officially No.1 yet, you never know woolies night flood tomorrow
September 12, 200816 yr I think a genuine surprise was Will Young's Leave Right Now back in 2003, up until then it was common knowledge that reality acts were doomed to be one-hit wonders, and it was up against Shane Richie's reprehensible cover of 'I'm Your Man' which was a charity single, normally assured a number one. Here is the story on the BBC news site about the shops running out of the Leave Right Now single, because they hadn't ordered enough due to low expectations http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3243630.stm still makes me smile that all the cynics got their comeuppance...
September 12, 200816 yr :o I forgot about Tatu. I think the first week sales for the top 3 that week was something like: Leona 200+k Take That 100+k McFly MorethanwhatTransylvaniagot k (Does anyone have the actual sales???) Any other week and they all would have made #1 =]

September 13, 200816 yr a few more Vengaboys - We're Going To Ibiza Black Legend - You See The Trouble With Me Aqua - Doctor Jones Britney Spears - Born To Make You Happy Fatman Scoop - Be Faithful I think a genuine surprise was Will Young's Leave Right Now back in 2003, up until then it was common knowledge that reality acts were doomed to be one-hit wonders, and it was up against Shane Richie's reprehensible cover of 'I'm Your Man' which was a charity single, normally assured a number one. Where these ones really surprising? The Vengaboys had just scored a #1 only a few months earlier with "Boom Boom Boom", same with Aqua and "Barbie Girl". Britney Spears was still a big phenomenon when "Born To Make You Happy" hit. Black Legend had received a lot of publicity through the "Is it Barry White/ Is it not?" mystery. Fatman Scoop was ALL over the airwaves in the months leading up to its release. And "Leave Right Now" was one of the most hyped up releases in recent years.
September 13, 200816 yr I think they were expected to be big hits but not really #1s. Well that was my take on it
September 13, 200816 yr From the chart reference subforum. OK...mine were slightly off but still...huge amounts for a top 3
September 13, 200816 yr Steve Brookstein in 2005 (I thought Band Aid 20 would keep him off). Sam and Mark in 2004 (were they really that popular). Mad World in 2003 (thought Darkness would be a dead cert for Christmas No1). Bob The Builder in 2000 (thought it had it's chance when it entered behind Eminem). Gabrielle in 2000 (2nd song off the album and had not been No1 since 1993). Cliff in 1999 (surprised it entered at 2 and even more surprised when it made No1. Blondie in 1999 (not had a hit since the 1980's) Cher (released in the same week as George Michael,U2,Culture Club & Alanis Morissette but beat them all).
September 13, 200816 yr Truly surprising even shock No1's: 1999 Vengaboys (Boom Boom Boom) indeed, I had never even heard this song before the Saturday when I watched CD:UK and it was announced as No.1
September 13, 200816 yr Chicane - Don't Give Up I came back from holiday in Tenerife in March 2000 to hear this was at No.1 and I was like 'whaaaaat' :o I thought 5ive's Don't Wanna Let You Go was heading for No.1 and it ended up at No.9
September 13, 200816 yr Agreed with Mad World, I was so sure it'd be The Darkness, that would have been one of the best Xmas #1s ever if it had. They were leading all week and then Mad World overtook it right at the end. Was quite surprised at Meck's Thunder In My Heart too as it had been ages since any dance #1 of any kind, and it was just your average looped-80s-sample house really.
