Posted November 19, 200816 yr If an album didn't sell that much, it's okay to release a bonus edition. But when an album was pretty successful ("Spirit", "Good girl gone bad"), it's a bit pointless, unless you could swap the old version for a new one and you shouldn't have the buy the same album in order to get those extra tracks. It's the record comapnies milking more money out of fans, if you ask me. Thank God I didn't buy "Spirit" yet like I wanted to, I'll wait until I see the deluxe edition on sale.
November 19, 200816 yr As I said on another thread yesterday, it's standard policy now at Universal (to name one studio) that all major releases get a deluxe/re-release version. There was a big article on it in the Guardian a while back. It's the record companies ' attempt to offset the still plummeting sales in the overall market.
November 19, 200816 yr I don't think ALL Deluxe editions are pointless, but most of them are! specially if they only have 2 or 3 extra tracks. I have always said, why don't they just save them for their new album  Britney is doing the best idea. she is releasing a standard edition of 'Circus' but also on the same day is releasing a Deluxe Edition, so that fans have the choice of what to buy! I will be buying the Deluxe Edition :funky:
November 19, 200816 yr Here is an article from MW regarding Deluxe Editions ============= Universal puts faith in deluxe editions to drive Q4 Source:MW 07:47 | Monday October 6, 2008 By Paul Williams Universal is turning to its big guns such as Snow Patrol and the Kaiser Chiefs as it rolls out a series of deluxe versions of key new albums aimed at both fans and the gift-buying market. A year after claiming two of the biggest-selling Q4 titles with deluxe editions of Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black and Take That’s Beautiful World, the major is undertaking its biggest push yet in this market by rolling out extended versions of around a dozen of its new albums. The schedule kicked off a week ago with Polydor act James Morrison’s Songs For You Truths For Me, while forthcoming albums that will be issued as both standard releases and in extended versions will include titles by The Killers, Katherine Jenkins, Razorlight and Stereophonics. “It’s a big initiative for us and it’s an initiative that’s been driven across our biggest releases,” says Universal commercial director Brian Rose who is billing the extended formats as “value of music” releases. “We normally do deluxe versions on selected titles 52 weeks of the year and these primarily target fan bases and have been a week one phenomenon, but the key difference with these are there are two phases to it.” Rose says the first phase will occur around each album’s initial release when the title will be issued in a standard format and as a value of music edition. “Obviously, we’ll target fan bases but the second phase when we market in the last four weeks of the year will target the gift market,” he adds. Universal has also overhauled the look and make-up of the value of music editions, which will all be housed in similar packaging and are expected to retail for up to £15. “The other key difference with these deluxe versions is that more often than not previously they tended to have a second disc in a jewel case, but we’re moving to a new package which is even more deluxe, if you like, and it’s not just about a second disc, which may have audio and video content, it’s about the booklet as well,” Rose adds.
November 19, 200816 yr REALLY Pissed off that they're doing a deluxe of The Killers album <_< Mine is just being shipped from HMV and if i'd have known this earlier I would have cancelled and waited for the Deluxe <_< It's all becoming ridiculous NOW! Unless the Killers Deluxe version has 2 New tracks and a DVD or about 8 or 9 new songs (Ala Amy & Duffy) then I won't be buying :(
November 19, 200816 yr Some do include good extras - for example the Beautiful World had all the B sides and a DVD too (which was really funny.) If it wasn't for that DVD I obviously wouldn't have bought it as I already had the B sides. I think Leona's deluxe has a DVD too so at least its something extra. No-one's twisting people's arms to buy them though so I don't see what the problem is. In addition ... it isn't just the record industry that's doing this! My son now has five bloody versions of the boardgame Monopoloy! Bog-standard, Junior, Wigan, Millionaire & World Edition!!!!! I'm sure he'll want another when they think of it! Thank goodness he ain't too fond of Risk as I think there are about 25 versions of that out there! Norma
November 19, 200816 yr Does it really matter? Some Deluxe Editions I have have bonus dvd's and extra songs. What's wrong with that?
November 19, 200816 yr Its a good idea becuase it means new songs can be added which are potential hits. And if people want to buy the album new buyers or old thats up to them, noones forcing them to part with the money, i find this argument ridiculous, there such as thing as free choice, its the same price and its got all the extra stuff which is a good deal. As proved by leonas album, going #1, high selling albums can still sell well.

New buyers who haven't bought the album first time round get a better album and fans can buy it too if they want. People who don't want to buy the whole album again can just download the extra songs individually anyway so I don't see the problem.

With deluxe editions I'll just download the new tracks. Unfortunately for Leona fans, they don't think its a good idea to have the deluxe available physically and digitally at the same time.
November 19, 200816 yr The Rihanna thing is a joke. Its Good Girl Gone Bad Reloaded Reloaded. This is the third version.
November 19, 200816 yr I'm worse. I have two versions of Star Wars Monopoly! ... I forgot ... he's got the Simpson's Monopoly as well! I think he has a thing about Monopoly! Norma
November 19, 200816 yr I just download extra tracks from itunes, which is where a lot of my albums come from anyway
November 19, 200816 yr The Rihanna thing is a joke. Its Good Girl Gone Bad Reloaded Reloaded. This is the third version. Now the Rihanna situation to me is entirely different ... she's released all but one track as a single as well hasn't she? Now that really is milking it for all its worth. I take it she'll do exactly the same thing with her next album. Norma
November 19, 200816 yr The Rihanna thing is a joke. Its Good Girl Gone Bad Reloaded Reloaded. This is the third version. This is her 4th version of the album  Good Girl Gone Bad (Original) Good Girl Gone Bad + Remixes Good Girl Gone Bad Reloaded (Original + 3 Extra tracks) Good Girl Gone Bad Reloaded Again (Reloaded version + DVD) God knows how she makes the Top 10 with her singles all the time LMAO!
November 19, 200816 yr I think it's a total rip-off and a con. If an act can't do a proper album first time around, don't expect people to pay £££ again.
