Julio Iglesias had made a career out of singing love songs over Latin pop music in the 1970s and '80s, and his son, Enrique, updated his father's sound and approach for the new millennium. Breaking out big around the same time as Ricky Martin, both teenybopper artists touched off a widespread explosion of Latin pop artists. - HMV

There was no shortage of new acoustic singer-songwriters emerging from the U.K. in the mid 2000s. However, Scottish teenager Paolo Nutini had a slightly different take on things, bearing the marked influence of Marvin Gaye and Wilson Pickett as well as some usual suspects like David Gray and Damien Rice. Nutini's debut full-length, THESE STREETS, showcased his surprisingly gritty vocals to great effect as well as the undeniably catchy and commercial aspects of his songwriting. - HMV

Anglo/Spanish singer-songwriter, Jack Penate, arrived in the wake of Jamie T and Lily Allen. Ploughing a similar shambling, indie-skank furrow--utilising ska and reggae rhythms--as Jamie T, Penate was snapped up by XL Recordings after playing several energetic, and well-received gigs in his native London. Penate's breakthrough came with his third single, "Torn On The Platformö, which reached number 7 in the charts on it's release in June 2007. The song, a live favourite, has frequently provoked mass stage invasions at gigs. A feature of gigs that will probably fizzle out as his gigs get bigger...and involve organised security.
