Ermm... is it just me, or is 'Poison' being a played a bit slowly?
The X Factor Finalists must've had some pretty big physical sales :o
Coldplay still to come

indeed, will be an interesting battle to see if the pogues or coldplay top the xmas songs treet this season!!pity coldplay dont add more versions or a physical so it might peak a bit higher - top 5 on radio now and will be high on video roation.then a big fall next sunday on itunes!!

Saying it's not music is a bit harsh, infact there is actual sheet music to it. John Cage was a true musical genius (for other reasons than 4"33) and 4"33 was a masterpiece.

it's not silence, it's the sound you hear when you sit and just listen to nothing for 4 minutes and 33 seconds. It's about appreciation. It's a statement John Cage was trying to get across that pretty much every person who watches the X Factor clearly do no understand in an almost cringeworthy amount of non-understanding of culture on their part.

And anyway who want's to buy silence? well i'd perfer to buy silence giving money to charity then for an awful Biffy Clyro cover that makes money for Cowell's 52nd swimming pool.

It's a shame it only made 21, but alas too many campaigns and the genius of the RATM campaign is too dated even a year on to happen again.

this is such an elitist attitude. you or john cage may not like the music the winners of x factor produce but others do. music is art and art is subjective, it is like saying blue is better than the colour yellow.

if people want easy to listen to x factor winners music then so be it, who is it hurting and why have to make a stand against it.

Good post, Chris - well put :D

thank you Matthew, it had to be said, far too many people vastly missed the point, and quite frankly need to get over it, as if something that is making money for charity is some sort of horrifying thing just because it dared to challenge the x factor. sad times.

Is this Silence song or whatever for charity?

yep, 100% of proceeds being given to 5 different charities (apart from i'm guessing the cut itunes take etc).

+1

But never mind lets have another bad cover made to sound like Westlife because you know 500,000 people would buy it if it wasn't from the X Factor, yeah.. The Christmas #1 is THE event at Christmas for me and in the last couple of years my excitement has come back because of campaigns like this at least sparking other people's interest. In 20 years people will still remember John Cage and RATM but not any of the X Factor artists (so far anyway)

And YAY to them playing the proper version of Fairytale of New York :cheer:

Because as much as I enjoy the X Factor, it is totally stifling the charts and making it very difficult for genuine bands and singers to make an impact in the industry by themselves and through hard work.

So you think people who brought the track, people who gave money to charity, are morons, so charity donators are morons. You must be a lovely person.

People who pay money for an empty mp3 must be eejits, there is no other logical conclusion that can be made.

yes music is art, that is one of the most important aspects here, and John Cage was a true ARTIST, do some research on him.

I'm glad you see music is art, and I shall tell you how X Factor is not art, it is because the x factor is here to make money, that is it's only reason, it does not wish to make good music people will enjoy, it is here to make a $h!tload of money, it's not about the art, it's about the money, and that is my main issue with major record labels and commercial music. it's a karaoke show, it definatly is not art, if people enjoy it good for them, but if you think people doing karaoke is art, then you are mistaken.

oh and who is it hurting? well all the independent musicians who try to do something interesting with their music but get no where because they arent on a reality tv show making unoriginal and commercial music.

Does anyone know why this has climbed so much?

Because as much as I enjoy the X Factor, it is totally stifling the charts and making it very difficult for genuine bands and singers to make an impact in the industry by themselves and through hard work.

it symbolises the noughties imo - reality tv creating a quick route to sucess which ultimately diminishes creativity and culture!!

Its not entirely empty. There is more to it than the musical content, open your mind (and thats a logical conclusion too).

only 2 singles reached the top 75 for coldplay from their last album?!

4 - Violet Hill, Lost, VLV and LITii.
