It will affect the albums too - on twitter Charlie Simspon said copies his album due out next week have been destroyed and release may be pushed back

Oh yeah, albums will probably be affected quite a lot by it. I'm just used to the word 'physicals' meaning physical singles (CDs and vinyl) :P

I'd love Modestep to be #1 but I think they'll be top 20 at best.

I remember you saying that Cinema would be top 100 at best.

Because when I predict one song wrong that automatically means all my other predictions are wrong too... :P

Nero was my 2nd pick for the top, but my first (Christina ) could get there by Sunday easily tbh seeing as it's so close!

Christina has no chance now, as she's falling due to the price increase. SHAME, I'd love to see that happen.

This 59p effect is so huge, record labels SHOULD do something with it.

I might be wrong, but could this week be the closest Ed Sheeran has gotten to #1 (in terms of sales)?

Having a Wretch 32 and Emeli Sande top 2 next week sound too good to be true! :o I would love it to happen. They're two very talented British artists, both with fantastic songs, which are really quite different to your typical 2011 chart hit imo.

Great to see David Guetta safely in the top 40 then. I hope all his promo singles can get top 40. And awesome to see Watch the Throne at #2!! :D Didn't expect it that high, especially sing their previous albums didn't do that well over here.

In the 8 weeks since Ed first got to #3...

#1 75,252 // Ed 57,607 // Diff. 17,645

#1 76,587 // Ed 44,951 // Diff. 31,636

#1 60,316 // Ed 44,398 // Diff. 15,918

#1 140,571 // Ed 47,534 // Diff. 93,037

#1 117,165 // Ed 46,584 // Diff. 70,581

#1 73,770 // Ed 50,947 // Diff. 22,823

#1 98,016 // Ed 42,991 // Diff. 55,025

#1 66,316 // Ed 37,915 // Diff. 28,401

So it was bizarrely closest to #1 sales-wise when it was #6

YES! I knew Cher would hold up better than people predicted. I reckon she'll still be top 5 for Sunday. Come on Christina. Go Top 3!

because the SONY distribution centre in London was burnt down last night,

so thats all the SYco CD's and all the indie lables stock.

Reading that just made my day, it means Cher's physicals will be just a tad low

could this week see 50k for a number 1??

wretch for number 1 next week!!

hahahaha! that tickled me, i think you could be right!

You think they're going to sell 50k

I would say 40 - 45k would be more realistic looking at Nero's sales

Just reading through these comments, I'd be more than happy to see Emeli Sandé 'Heaven' get to no. 1 next week. If singles sales are on a sharp week-on-week decrease, then even a song selling 25-30k could go top 10 quite easily.

What a complete contrast to last summer when songs selling 30k were struggling to go top 10. :o

Wretch 32 will no doubt do well as he's become more of an established act this year but 'Don't Go' is imo such a non event of a song that doesn't have any redeeming features. The type of song that would do well next week but be forgotton about in 6 months time.

It does seem that whoever is no. 1 this Sunday are most likely going to record the lowest weekly sales figures for a no. 1 single so far this year.

But despite sales at the top of the chart currently seeming dreadful compared to last year, we're still seeing 10+% increases on this-week-one-year-ago sales every week. Sales lower down and specifically outside the top 200 must be really (comparatively) big! :o

I think it's likely whoever's #1 this week will have the lowest weekly tally for a #1 since the third week at #1 for 'Break Your Heart' (42,746), if not even lower  And if Wretch/Emeli disappoint that figure will collapse even further next week! If Nero do get #1 this week they were EXTREMELY lucky to do so.

The last #1 sales week lower than Taio's third was Katy's fourth week with 'I Kissed A Girl' on 40,587 (its sales improved the next week) then the last sub-40k total which the #1 this week or next week might well do was Kid Rock's week where he sold 37,111.

That's a good point about sales further down the chart. The fact singles are now selling months after release thanks to unlimited downloads (whereas physicals ran out of stock eventually) is the reason why songs like 'Just The Way You Are' have been able to become million sellers.

It does seem shocking that in this day and age a UK no. 1 can still sell so poorly. Already this year we've had 10 weeks where the no. 1 sold over 100k and most other weeks between 80-99k. I personally put this down to lack to big new releases. Nero aren't really a singles act but the record company have tapped into the "release in a quiet week" format that got songs to no. 1 in 1999/2000 with relatively low sales for its time - then those songs would plummet down the chart the following week.

If Nero did get to no. 1 this Sunday, imagine how far down the chart they would drop next week. 01-09? Cher Lloyd could be looking at a similar drop this week. It's reasons like this why I don't approve of "one week wonders" but that's the UK charts for you. The Wanted have had four weeks at no. 1 in Ireland - I'd never have expected that to happen.

I don't think Nero would fall that far from #1 but it could fall to about #5 or #6. And Cher should still be top 5 this week based on her progress so far on iTunes. But this is probably more down to the lack of competition and everything else plummetting week-on-week as well... which is also the reason JLS look like they could feasibly return to #1 (and SMMW is actually holding up comparatively well for them so that's saying quite a lot)...
Anyway, shouldn't the info on Nero's lead over JLS/Cher/Ed Sheeran (~550, ~1,010 and ~3,000 respectively) and the week-on-week climbs of Guetta and Christina be noted in the midweek update in the first post?

I thought iTunes controlled which songs had their prices increased/decreased and not the record label..?
