Coldplay began working on Mylo Xyloto in 2009, while the band was still in the midst of its multi-year tour in support of Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. Recording sessions stretched from 2009 to 2011, with Brian Eno collaborating with the band on several songs and R&B singer Rihanna lending her vocals to “Princes of China.” Markus Dravs, Daniel Green, and Rik Simpson all shared production credits, too, resulting in a diverse album inspired by industrial rock and electro-pop. Coldplay began debuting the new tracks as early as May 2011, with “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” kicking off a string of anthemic singles.

'21' is the second album from singer-songwriter Adele, and like her first record, 2008's '19', it is named after the age Adele was when she wrote the album. Most of '21' was produced by Rick Rubin, who has worked with some of the biggest acts of the last 20 years, and Florence & The Machine producer Paul Epworth. Lyrically the album reflects Adele's increased maturity since '19', although it explores many of the same themes.

Left to their own devices on Here and Now, Nickelback have embraced who they are. Chad Kroeger’s brow is no longer furrowed, treating rock & roll as an ordeal; he’s stepped back a bit, allowing himself to have a good time. Nickelback no longer rely solely on heavy-footed power chords set to lumbering rhythms. True, this signature sound still underpins much of Here and Now, but the group is now loose enough to throw in a disco-rock thumper (“Kiss It Goodbye,” another in a long line of anti-Hollywood, anti-plasticity anthems destined to be staples in Hollywood strip clubs) and even dabbles in a bit of power pop on “When We Stand Together,” giving it an actual swing, something unheard on previous Nickelback albums, and this isn’t an isolated incident. “Gotta Get Me Some” abandons the brutal four-on-the-floor Nickelback signature in favor of an actual groove, and the group even sounds nimble on its power ballads. This, combined with a considerably broader sonic palette -- previous Nickelback albums were on a grayscale; this is defiantly colorful thanks in large part to so many guitar and vocal overdubs that the record sometimes feels like the Mutt Lange job the producer should have given them on Dark Horse -- turns Here and Now into what’s Nickelback’s easiest album to enjoy. ¯ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

It has been good to see The Wanted, JLS and 1D not getting to #1 by default I must admit.

 

Shame this sales climate wasn't about when Westlife released just anything and got to #1 :(

 

Replace Westlife with McFly and I agree!

 

Westlife amassed the majority of their #1's between 1999-2002 when #1 sales were at similar average levels to what we have now. And then You Raise Me Up in 2005 was genuinely popular - didn't it sell 100k or thereabouts in its first week? Which was insane in the dire 2005 sales climate! McFly scoring a load of 30k #1's and then plummeting was more annoying for me :drama:

Suprised to see Cher Lloyd at #22 :up: 1 from the mid weeks and The Sats at #23 first week. :\ Pixie's new album's out the top 40 after 1 week thats terrible :o

Guess so - they are both good examples of fan based buying anything tbh. Both had great songs though of course which did cross over (Flying Without Wings, You Raise me Up, World Of Our OWn etc in Westlifes case)

I actually prefer Lightning, Gotta Be You and Take A Chance On Me to Glad You Came, What Makes You Beautiful and She Makes Me Wanna.

 

Agreed with "lightning" and "take a chance on me". Both pretty good songs

Does anyone know which album has had the longest chart run in the top 10 in music history for the UK?

WOW, I was not expecting Kate Bush to hold on to a top 5 placing at all. :o

 

Really pleased she did though as I'd feared it would end up being her lowest charting album. #5 is great for this time of year.

One Direction's song probably climbed 5 places due to the album being released.

They also performed it on Children in Need last Friday night.

Fantastic to see 21 not only holding onto top 10, but actually being #9 - didn't expect it to overtake Nickelback by the end of the week :D
