and me. Paradise needs to be number 1 considering the lack of decent songs right now :D

I wouldn't say that - there are loads of decent songs about at the moment that deserve better peaks - Lego House, Lloyd/Andre 3000 to name but two, plus I still hold out hope that somehow Adele's STFTTR will be top 10 one day.

Probs the X Factor time

Same here. I wouldn't normally be supporting a song like Paradise for #1...but looking at all the other vaguely feasible options we have at the moment, Paradise all the way!!!

It'd make a nice change if it got to #1 anyway. It must've been ages since we had anything even remotely alternative at #1.

'Cannonball' was arguably "remotely alternative". :P

lol. That's true. And I guess before that there was When We Collide for a similar reason. And Killing in the Name is arguably alternative/rock I think.

Depends on what/if she performs it at the Brit awards this year. I can see it being either 'Set Fire to the Rain' or 'Turning Tables' that gets the Brit performance this year. It's probably the reason why they've held off releasing TT for so long. Wouldn't surprise me, anyway.

Is she actually performing again then?

I can't not see her performing in all honesty. She basically was the success story of 2011. The only way she wouldn't would be if she was still having problems with her voice/illness.
Paradise going number 1 won't exactly be a win for alternative music considering it's mainstream Coldplay's most poppy song yet, better than an XF number 1 though. Incidentally, I doubt the two members of the band who were tentative about going on XF will be quite so hesitant next time. It's done wonders for both their album and single sales.
That was stuck behind a different #1 every week except the last one though - the top 2 in the USA have been Rihanna and LMFAO for the past 8 weeks, swapping around last week :P

OK then, All 4 One "I Swear" - stuck behind Wet Wet Wet "Love Is All Around" for 7 weeks :P

There's nothing 'arguable' about Killing In The Name being alternative/rock - using the reliable as ever etc. source of Wikipedia its genre is listed as 'rap metal/alternative metal/funk metal'.

The original of Many Of Horror is classified as 'alternative rock', but Matt's version is 'pop/pop rock'. And similarly the original of Cannonball is 'folk rock' but Little Mix's version is just 'pop'.

Paradise will definitely be the first #1 undeniably in the alternative spectrum of music since KITN anyway IMO (Wikipedia classes it as 'electro rock/R&B' - not sure about the latter genre but the former sounds about right).

Have you not heard 'Princess Of China'? :P

According to Wikipedia, In My Head by Jason Derulo, Once by Diana Vickers, This Ain't a Love Song by Scouting For Girls and Written in the Stars by Tinie Tempah are all rock. So that's quite a few rock-influenced #1s, but I think rock fans have different "rules" for categorizing what falls into their genre than fans of other genres. I think the song NEEDS to be played by a band that actually play guitars to be considered a rock song. I think I've mentioned this before, but I'm pretty sure if someone like Rihanna sang over a rock instrumental, they wouldn't consider it a rock song. Whilst when Rihanna sings on a hip hop instrumental (e.g. Talk That Talk, Hard, etc.) people do consider it to be a hip hop song, even if it's not done by an actual rapper.

Paradise, I don't really think is RnB. All it shares with RnB is the medium tempo, and the strings and piano. But it's at least much closer to RnB than Beautiful People and Don't Stop the Party are. :drama: Electro-rock, maybe, but I was on its Youtube page the other day and in the comments section there was this massive arguement with lots of people saying it's a pop song, so I really have no clue tbh.

I think they fall more into the category of 'rock-influenced pop' while Paradise is more 'pop-influenced rock'. I dunno. I wouldn't call myself a fan of rock exactly but I'd certainly say Paradise counts as an 'alternative' song and those four don't (SFG are a bit borderline but I think they're a BIT too pop to count).

Yeah, probably. I've never really understood what seperates rock and pop, which is why I said RATM is 'arguably' alternative, just incase it wasn't.

19. Jessie J 'Who You Are'

20. Jessie J 'Domino'

27. James Morrison featuring Jessie J 'Up'

58. Jessie J featuring B.o.B 'Price Tag'

^ Great start of 2012 for Jessie J then, possibly 4 tracks in the top 40, definitely top 50.

33. JLS 'Do You Feel What I Feel?'

39. Example 'Midnight Run'

48. Lana del Rey 'Video Games'

89. Pitbull featuring Chris Brown 'International Love'

184. David Guetta featuring Sia 'Titanium'

Have you not heard 'Princess Of China'? :P

Aside from having Rihanna on it, I don't think it's 'poppy' at all...

I don't think it is either but it's definitely more 'poppy' than Paradise is IMO.

23. Someone Like You - ADELE

29. Set Fire to the Rain - ADELE

36. Rolling In the Deep - ADELE

I think she could possibly get all 3 of these top 40 this week, I know RITD wasn't there in the mids but Lou Monte and Justin Bieber will almost certainly drop out by Sunday and RITD is only climbing on iTunes so could overtake some others as well.

45. Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People

Would love to see this back in the top 40 again, at least on iTunes. Fantastic longevity for it.

73. Rapture (Avicii New Generation Radio Edit) - Nadia Ali

Anyone know why this is suddenly doing so well?

I was trying to think of the last alt song to get to number one without a campaign and I'm thinking it may have been Sex on Fire by KOL in 2008 (in which there were three with Coldplay and Kid Rock )

'Pop' is an artificial genre which empcompasses everything that is popular. When we say pop we mean its middle of the road music with tried and tested elements for maximum commercial appeal. So you get Rihanna who is doing Pop-R&B. Gaga does Electro-Pop which is dance music filtered down to catchy pop hooks. Then there is Blink 182 who do pop-punk which is rock music with pop hooks but they have gotten into harder sounds with their comeback. Its like Avicci vs Flo Rida, Flo Rida made that a pop song, Avicci didn't create the song for radio, it hardly has any words, its a dance track.

You don't get more Rock than Rage. You don't hear Rage on daytime Radio One usually and even they edge toward Rock anyway.

None of those songs are Rock songs, they didn't even chart on the Official UK Rock Chart. Wiki classes The Beatles as a Rock band and Pop because they are the godfathers of pop music. I don't even think they had a word for pop before The Beatles making them a Rock band by default but you can clearly see the difference between them and The Rolling Stones and The Who.

Rihanna had a song called Rock Star where she dressed up as Rock Stars and sang that she was a rock star. She was about as much of a Rock star as Britney when she was in full leather writing on a motorbike singing 'I love Rock and Roll'.

Paradise is fairly standard indie song. Beautiful People and Don't Stop the Party are Electro-Pop.

I'm really surprised at Video Games going the other way instead of climbing, last week I said its got to be at least top 20 this week, not really impressed.
This sounds kinda stupid but I hate classifying things as 'pop' because as it just means popular, you could say everything in the top 40 is pop (if you're gonna be pedantic over it) I usually say 'pop/rock', 'dance-pop', 'indie-pop' etc. instead,
