Been listening to Paradise a few times over the weekend. It's a fairly standard Coldplay song. I dont see what the fuss is about.

Its always been like it. If anyone owns The Virgin Top 40 Chart book, if you look at a chart that has week ending of 7th Jan, it will always fall in the new year. It ends up as the first #1 track of 2012.

When OCC updates their chart archive next week this chart will create a new folder for the year.

You've now confused me, i understood that this would be the first number one of 2012 but i thought it's sales counted towards the EOY chart 2011, is this not the case? as Radio 1 are counting down EOY 2011 chart on saturday.

That's brilliant sales for Coldplay then, Olly not doing too shabby either - he can't be far off what he sold the week he was number 1!

Oh yeah, didn't realise that about Olly - so he'll end up with his sales at #1 being only his fourth highest weekly sales (maybe even his fifth if his sales stay strong next week?) Definitely the new Orson 'No Tomorrow'.

I know it does sound confusing, but its sales belong to 2011.

Yes the sales are counted for 2011 (the whole sales period is in 2011) but it is the first announced chart of 2012.

Coldplay already have the new Orson tag - with Viva la Vida... :D

Did that sell higher in other weeks than when it was #1?

No - but it was a default number 1 because it's sales were less crap than everything else around at the time. We clearly have different definitions of what a new Orson - "No Tomorrow" is.

Well, surely all #1s are there as they sale more than everything else?

Plus VLV sold 3k more than Orson (although I agree the sales were terrible). I think Olly Murs did an Orson a couple of weeks ago.

Clearly! I was referring to Orson having an unwanted record of lowest weekly sales for a #1 when it actually sold more in surrounding weeks when it wasn't #1 - it's the same deal with Olly but less severe as he only had the lowest weekly sales for a #1 of the year (and decade to date but I'm sure that'll be 'beaten').

Yes, No Tomorrow sold more in the three weeks before and two weeks after than it did the one week it was number one, Olly looks like he'll definitely be the same.

Indeed but you may have noted the words "less crap" when I described the sales of VLV in my post.

Singles Sales

Not actual sales but based on Music Week's colour coding of titles which have recorded 1) a sales increase 2) a sales increase of 50%+ here are the singles that have done this so far this week. The sales increase is compared to sales for the whole of last week so for example paradise" by Coldplay will have already sold at least 75,933 copies as they have increased total sales when compared to all of last week by at least 50%

Singles showing an increase (in chart order):

Coldplay*, Olly Murs, Flo-rida, Ed Sheeran*, Rihanna feat Calvin Harris, Labrinth feat TT*, LMFAO*, Rizzle Kicks, Maroon 5 feat CA*, Avicii, One Direction*, Olly Murs feat RK*, Rihanna (YDO)*, Ed Sheeran (TAT)*, The Wanted*, LMFAO feat LB&G*, Christina Perri*, Katy Perri, Professor Green feat ES*, Beyonce, Jessie J, Bruno Mars (MY)*, Adele (SLY)*, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars (IWR), justine Bieber, Adele (SFTTR)*, James Morrison feat JJ*, David Guetta feat Usher*, The Wanted (L)*, Jessie J feat B.o.B*, Rebecca Ferguson

* = sales increase of 50%+

by Robbie on Haven

Wow so Coldplay on for 100k this week then, thats great - the top 40 should all sell around 15k copies - maybe even 5 million singles will be sold overall - amazing!!
Really, Coldplay on 75.9k+ already? :o :o :o Okay, definitely heading for a comfortable 6 figure sum if that's true!

Edited by Coldbray

I always thought it meant an increase of what it was doing this time last week.
