That's pleasing for Coldplay. A true slow-burner!

Its going to have a wicked chart run

Chart Run: 14-17-20-13-11-12-7-2-5

Who would have thought after 9 weeks in the chart it finally gets there, it just has to be a #1 now.

I remember some members fretting when it got to #11, fearing it'd missed out on its chance for Top 10!
Do this week's sales count towards 2011 or 2012? It should be 2011 as all the sales are announced in 2011, but the chart is announced in 2012?

If I had a penny for every time someone had asked this...

It's always the period the sales cover, not the chart date, or the date it is announced.

What about the 5 weeks before that when it was banned from the charts...

I estimate it would have gone something like 15-22-21-20-12... then as above

When I found out it was initially not chart eligible I thought it would miss out on a chance to even go top 40

I found this on occ twitter

This week’s Official Update has been delayed slightly by the Christmas holidays, but the Official Charts Company can now reveal that Coldplay’s ‘Paradise’ and Olly Murs’ ‘Dance With Me Tonight’ are currently battling it out to be the first Number 1 of 2012!

‘Paradise’, which was originally released back in September previously peaked on the Official Singles Chart at Number 2, is currently in the lead, while former chart topper ‘Dance With Me Tonight’ is in second place.

It's technically true, the chart is announced on New Year's Day. The sales period ends at the end of 2011 but it's not declared #1 until 2012.
because it is the first number one of 2012 but the sales count towards the year 2011 chart.
OCC have just announced on their twitter that Military Wives have now passed 600,000 copies

And it will forever be listed as the chart for w/e 7th January 2012

So they've done at least 43k this week so far and by common sense that means Coldplay are close to if not over their sales total for the whole of last week already! They should definitely do more than they did the week they got #2 then even if the Wives retake #1 (which I think they could still do).

If it passed it yesterday it's... still in the balance actually because it could shift 10k of physicals over tomorrow and Saturday.

That's brilliant sales for Coldplay then, Olly not doing too shabby either - he can't be far off what he sold the week he was number 1!

Its always been like it. If anyone owns The Virgin Top 40 Chart book, if you look at a chart that has week ending of 7th Jan, it will always fall in the new year. It ends up as the first #1 track of 2012.

When OCC updates their chart archive next week this chart will create a new folder for the year.
