By not going up against Rihanna and the novelty dance track of the year :kink: JLS have always seemed to be quite lucky and careful in the weeks that they release to give them the best chance of getting to #1

JLS made the big mistake of going against Rihanna last year, when Take A Chance On Me only made #2. It looks like they've learnt their lesson whereas One Direction still think they can beat Rihanna (GBY and LWWY both made #3 behind Rihanna at #1 and massive dance hit at #2, Good Feeling last year and Gangnam this year)

Anyway HGITW is much better than LWWY so a #1 for them wouldn't be too bad, even though SHM deserve it more.

I know it's been said before but it'd REALLY help out Naughty Boy if iTunes bothered to credit Emeli Sande on the track ;)

I actually liked 'Do You Feel What I Feel?' I think it should have been released before Christmas instead of 'Take A Chance On Me'. It probably would have done much better then.

'Proud' was awful.

Anyway, I think they are doing a pretty good job, if they can climb to the top 3 before the performance, they stand a chance of holding onto it. They need this to remain top five for a second week to disprove the critics. They usually bomb in week two.

Really interested to see how Labrinth/Emeli Sande will do with 'Beneath Your Beautiful' after the XF performance later - Would love it to go Top 10 but think thats out of the question.
Oh great :drama: I thought JLS were finally over with, and now this new single looks likely to be #1  How does JLS still do it when 1D miss the top 2?

Genuinely? Because boy band they may be, but JLS are actually MUCH BETTER than 1D. They can actually sing and some of their tracks have been quite decent. The Club Is Alive is the only truly terrible one I can think of. They actually have some sales behind their hype-a million selling debut album for starters.

I thought One Direction would've done well using the "if it ain't broke" attitude and released a track that was basically 'What Makes You Beautiful Pt II' but it backfired on them.

As for JLS, I suppose you have to give them credit for trying out new styles - even if I don't particularly like some of these tracks myself ('The Club Is Alive' :puke: ) but 'HGITW' is at least interesting to listen to. I don't think the song is anything special but it stands out over other tracks in the chart at the moment.

 2. Gangnam Style (강남스타일) - PSY

 3. Sweet Nothing (feat. Florence Welch) - Calvin Harris

:( Please don't have an awful chart run Calvin...

Yay for JLS already being top 10, maybe #1 could still be in their reach - not holding my breath though.

I actually like JLS themselves, they are a genuinely talented boyband. But I haven't liked any of their songs since She Makes Me Wanna (and even then, that was very generic admittedly), they are quite hit and miss material wise.

Thing is that "Take A Chance On Me" would have done nothing outside of X Factor season and would have been a far more emphatic ending to their top 10 streak. "Do You Feel What I Feel?" was decent enough to stand a chance in the New Year, it was the same tactic they used "One Shot" and "Eyes Wide Shut" but with diminishing returns.

It would be quite amusing if they could make #1 when 1D couldn't. Plus the song is actually decent.

JLS have an advantage over One Direction because:

- The sales this week at the top are much lower

- Their song is better (in most people's opinions I think)

- They held back their song for 2 months, One Direction only did for about 2 weeks I think

One Direction sold well, it was 70,000-80,000 iirc, that might be more than JLS sells this week, even if JLS get a higher chart position.

And we can't criticize One Direction or releasing against Rihanna, because we only knew basically last-minute that Rihanna was releasing something.

Also, as I said many times before, the reason Do You Feel What I Feel? and Proud did poorly was because they got such little promotion compared to what JLS usually get, rather than because their careers were over. You can't say Rihanna's career was over because Talk That Talk didn't go top 20, or that Lady Gaga's career is over because You and I didn't go top 20. Those songs were lacking in radio airplay, that's all, and when they can get that support back, they'll be back with another bigger hit.

I don't think JLS will get to number 1. They'll be one of those number 1's on itunes, but not officially. I can see it lasting at number 1 for 2 days or so, before falling to #6 or #7 by Saturday night (iTunes) thus giving them a #3/#4 peak officially.

When is the X-Factor (shameless cash in) charity single released this year?

Last year's chart run of {1}-2-17-48 was pretty terrible (but amusing).

I think it could miss #1 this year to be honest. Every year the first-week sales decrease and decrease, and if this trend continues, then it'll miss #1, unless it's a really low sales week.

I'd rather them have short chart runs tbh. I don't want a song I don't like to be in the chart for months on end, whether it gets #1 or not.

The chart run gets worse and worse every year, one has to assume it won't even get #1 this time because it can't get much worse than 1-2-17-48-x.

1-1-1-2-8-11-14-15-20-26-48-65-87-x (Hero)

1-2-5-11-12-29-51-x (You Are Not Alone)

1-1-7-14-22-47-91-x (Heroes)

1-2-17-48-x (Wishing On A Star)

'Heroes' spending a week longer than 'You Are Not Alone' at #1 is the only anomaly in the diminishing returns. Its 2nd week sales were still lower than that of 'YANA' and a lot lower than that of 'Hero'.

Unrelated: 'Skyfall' has re-overtaken 'One More Night' :D

Ooh, I really hope Bastille can finally go top 40 - with the EP sales and if the single keeps climbing, I'd assume it shouldn't be too hard

I did have a feeling JLS might have been able to sneak a week at number 1 - for comparisons against 1D, they're releasing in a very quiet week and has been held back for a while whereas Live While We're Young was released very soon after it premiered, they have the advantage of a slightly smarter record label here. (Not that I approve of the song, its just as shit as everything else they've released)

I think Wishing On a Star was the worst-selling #1 of last year (apart from Promises by Nero, but that's an amazing song ). But I guess it at least must've sold over 150,000 in total, which is better than the chart run makes it look.

The first-week sales were:

2008: 312,244

2009: 193,176

2010: 144,014

2011: 98,932 (infact, with these sales in 2009 or 2010, it would've missed #1, since those years there were tons of massive tunes, and #1 was selling 100,000+ each week, 2011 was just quite empty at that time of year).

And last year they featured JLS and One Direction on the song aswell. They'll need to come up with a good idea to increase sales for the single, or else I think it could sell less than 90,000 this year.

I think Swagger Jagger & Loca People also sold less than it (I'm sure there was another one as well) probably highlighting what non-number 1s they were, but it was the worst chart run for a number 1 that year for sure

1-1-7-14-22-47-91-x (Heroes)

Wasn't it #18 in its 4th week rather than #14? I think that week they calculated the charts wrong (anybody remember that? It was an absolute MESS ).

Not sure if JLS can make it. They're only around 30% of the #1, and i doubt the XFactor will have too large an effect. They will also fall quite fast throughout the week even if they get the #1 on iTunes tonight.

As of the end of 2011, in the year-end charts they placed:

47 - 348,300 - Jason Derulo - Don't Wanna Go Home - 348,300 - 02/07/11 - 1

49 - 347,600 - Rihanna ft Drake - What's My Name - 773,600 - 27/11/10 - 1

52 - 342,000 - JLS - She Makes Me Wanna - 342,000 - 06/08/11 - 1 (Can people STOP saying this was a non-#1, 52nd biggest-selling song of the year for goodness sake!!! :drama:)

54 - 340,200 - Olly Murs - Dance With Me Tonight - 340,200 - 03/12/11 - 1

57 - 329,400 - Ke$ha - We R Who We R - 334,100 - 08/01/11 - 1

59 - 325,500 - Pixie Lott - All About Tonight - 325,500 - 17/09/11 - 1

64 - 311,600 - Dappy - No Regrets - 311,600 - 01/10/11 - 1

73 - 282,900 - Wretch 32 - Don't Go - 282,900 - 27/08/11 - 1

82 - 256,600 - Sak Noel - Loca People - 256,600 - 08/10/11 - 1

96 - 237,000 - Example - Stay Awake - 237,000 - 10/09/11 - 1

112 - 209,000 - Cher Lloyd - Swagger Jagger - 209,000 - 13/08/11 - 1

122 - 179,000 - Matt Cardle - When We Collide - 992,800 - 25/12/10 - 1

132 - 167,200 - XFF/JLS/One Direction - Wishing On A Star - 167,200 - 10/12/11 - 1

135 - 164,200 - Nero - Promises - 164,200 - 20/08/11 - 1

Almost all the #1s that year made the year-end top 100 (and one of the ones that didn't sold most of its copies in 2010, and is a million seller/will be a million seller), so it wasn't too bad. Of course, sales will have changed a bit in the past 9 months.
