They will be at 0% at this rate in the next few years :(

I usually buy my music and DVDs from HMV and Play (as from March), with these 2 going, there only be WowCD and Amazon. I think HMV online will still be running though.

My local HMV in Chatham just moved premises, they probably wish they didn't.

This is awful :( What will i spend hours doing when i go into town now!

Tbh though charging £10+ for a 30 year old film which you can get for less than £2 on the internet was never going to last forever.

I am really gutted about this, it's been there my whole life but I rarely shop there any more. I can't say I didn't see this coming though.

Ah well, at least I can have fun raiding the closing down sale.

Where will people buy albums now? Surely digital/Amazon sales of them will rocket if only independents and supermarkets sell them?
this is so depressing, like, even more sad than when we lost woolworths. I'd still choose it over amazon/play today, it's just not the same buying a CD online as it is from a shop. :(
:( I very, very rarely actually BUY from HMV (Amazon <3) but this is still a really sad loss. Browsing in there while in town is always a great way to waste time. I just hope the album market isn't too badly hit.
It's sad but was always going to happen. I hate shopping, but I'll hate it even more now there'll be practically no entertainment shops to go to. I'll be do upset when I'm forced to download albums-I expect that day will come sooner rather than later.

It's really not. Even if physical albums do reach a point where they're not financially viable over here, they're viable in plenty of other markets. I'd import before downloading, myself. And not to mention most artists would probably have physical albums (even if only a certain amount) orderable from their site, anyway. I think even if the physical album became virtually impossible to buy from within the UK except from official artist websites, it wouldn't affect me much (and I say that as someone who buys a lot of albums!).

Awfully sad news, not just for the shops, but for everyone who will sadly lose their jobs :( Plus I have £40 in HMV vouchers to spend, I don't have a local HMV, unless I go into Cardiff for whatever reason.

Hope someone buys them out and runs them better. This is a major blow for music especially specialist music. Jake Bugg has only in the past 2 weeks been available in the likes Tesco and Asda. Looking earlier the only new releases in Tesco they're stocking this week is Les Miserables. No Everything, Everything. Where are people supposed to buy a more specialist variety of music in future without HMV?

Online, obviously.

You would think people in the music industry would step in to stop this from happening. Surely HMV is important to them for selling their products. Although they haven't helped themselves, I ordered four things online, and considering they do free postage, they sent me everything out seperatly for some reason.

Overall it may be cheaper that way. That way they only need a few different sizes of packaging and they don't have to worry about bundling everything up. Those extra packaging costs could outweigh the savings in postage.

HMV online has a 25% Blue Cross sale, looks like the site is going as well. :snif:

I'm sure Pop Bitch will shed more light on the subject later.

That sale has been on for a couple of days (and was in the store today as well) so thats not an indication that the site is going as well.

I imagine sales will rocket on the week it closes down for albums if they put everything on sale.

Sad to lose such an iconic brand, but unfortunately Amazon is cheaper and more convenient for me!

Im gutted not just because i work there but because i genuinely love HMV.

HMV are in serious trouble and i doubt they can be saved tbh or if anybody would actually want to save them after looking at the store takings - Most stores struggle to take £3,000 a day - Also there are no assets, The majority of stock in stores is not owned by HMV due to their new buying agreement with suppliers so im not so sure there would be a closing down sale as essentially suppliers have a right to request their stock as per Jessops.

Will be interesting to see what updates occur when i get to work tomorrow - Just hope we don't have a Jessops situation and HMV close by the end of the week :(
