Those songs you thought seemed likely to reach #1 prior to their release, but that never took off as you'd anticipated.

Looking at the top 10 hits from last year, ones I expected to get to #1 were Good Time and Blow Me (One Last Kiss). I think that if they had been released more effectively both could have reached the top spot - definitely in the case of Good Time, it's release was diabolical. Another was She Wolf (Falling To Pieces) - I expected it to do far better than it eventually did.

Of recent years:

Skyfall

Live While We're Young

Frisky

Missing You

Whip My Hair

Gotta Be You

Take A Chance On Me

Lightning

Born This Way

Heaven

A lot of these, I am thankful that they didn't reach #1 :P Would've liked Frisky, BTW and Heaven to be #1s.

Born This Way is the biggest recent one of the last few years for me - I'm not that surprised as it stands now but given the performance of previous 'unofficial' Comic Relief singles, I thought I Knew Him So Well by SuBo/Peter Kay in 2011 would be an easy number 1, how wrong I was...

With Born This Way (and Skyfall for that matter) it was more a case of bad luck that it didn't reach #1. Had they been released on the Sunday instead of Friday both would have easily been #1 I'm sure.
Shame by Robbie & Gary was one that people had been expecting for months to be a certain #1, no matter what it was up against!

Agree with the bolded ones (Frisky was a bit unlucky though tbf), LWWY was the one that stunned me the most!

At the time I thought Alone Again, Rockstar, Heart Vacancy and You Bring Me Joy would go to #1, but thankfully the public saw some sense

In recent years:

Love The Way You Lie

Happy

Just Can't Get Enough (The Saturdays)

Get Sexy

Don't Stop Believin (Glee)

Wavin' Flag

Barbra Streisand

The Flood (Take That)

Gold Forever

Best Thing I Never Had

Wild Ones

You Bring Me Joy

Locked Out Of Heaven

Have to agree with this choice, i was one of those who was sure it would be a sure fire number 1.

There were people who expected 'Blow Me (One Last Kiss)' to get to #1? I thought it did far better than anyone expected. Hmph.

Agree with all of Thermometer's list bar 'Missing You', 'Whip My Hair' and 'Heaven' (IIRC I did expect Wretch to be #1 that week despite it being a very atypical-sounding #1). The two 1D ones in particular, I thought they would dominate their opening weeks but neither even went top 2! 'Shame' (and also 'The Flood') is also a good call, I wonder if Take That will get another #1 with their next album (I assume they have one this year).

I thought 'Black And Yellow' by Wiz Khalifa was a guaranteed #1 after the fake version by The Hype Squad went top 40. Similar with Far East Movement's 'Like A G6' although the fake of that didn't chart. Still can't believe they both stalled at #5.

Would also say Justin Bieber's 'Boyfriend' for the same reasons as the 1D songs - I think it's only a matter of time before Bieber does get a #1 though, 'Boyfriend' was a lucky miss (IIRC it initially shot straight to #1 with a substantial lead on iTunes).

Also 'Locked Out Of Heaven'.

Shame' (and also 'The Flood') is also a good call, I wonder if Take That will get another #1 with their next album (I assume they have one this year).

I was thinking this after both of those missed number 1 (especially The Flood which I really shocked at). But, as Sing and Candy both got to number 1 last year, I think TT will manage it again with a strong song.

I think virtually every single Saturdays release that was near the top end of iTunes for it's first four days on sale from the last three years qualifies for this. I think one for me though from much further back (in comparison to some of the recent suggestions above) is True Steppers with Victoria Beckham and Dane Bowers 'Out of Your Mind'. I thought that it was a dead on cert for number 1 even when up against Spiller and I honestly thought I'd heard Mark Goodier wrong when I listened to Radio 1 that Sunday. And another one for me as well was Shakira 'Whenever, Wherever'. It had all the airplay and media exposure in the world that would have, in any other week, made it an immediate #1 and classic in the vein of 'Baby One More Time' three years previously - it was just very unfortunate that Will Young released his debut single off the back of Pop Idol that same week.

Britney Spears featuring Madonna - Me Against The Music

Mariah Carey - We Belong Together

Nearly every week "Moves Like Jagger" was #1 on iTunes.

Bruno Mars - Locked Out of Heaven - I honestly thought either this or Little Mix's 'DNA' would be #1 for that week, but no, One Direction had to come in with their (deadly boring, may I add) 'Little Things' and ruin everything.

Also 'Skyfall', but that's just bad timing really, had it been released on Sunday it would've been an easy #1.

Rule the world I thought might've nabbed a couple of weeks but the strength of Leona meant it wasn't to be. I think Take That will be due another no.1. In fact the flood is another one. I was sure that would be no.1.
Time to look back to the dark ages when I'd get home on a Tuesday (the day the chart was announced in those days), turn on the telly and look up Ceefax thinking "Surely Vienna will have made it to number one this week" :(
Release Me - Agnes and Man in the mirror by Michael Jackson from 2009.

I was surprised 'Release Me' even got to Top 3. I knew as soon as it was playlisted by Radio 1 and had good TV rotation, that it'd go Top 10, but Scandinavian artists were hardly renowned for getting massive hits tbh (and it wasn't exactly massive, I wish I heard it more - outside my own headphones - today).

Little Mix - DNA

Nicole Scherzinger - Poison

One Direction - LWWY

One Direction - Gotta Be You

Cher Lloyd - With Ur Love

Conor Maynard - Can't Say No

Conor Maynard - Vegas Girl

Britney Spears - Womanizer

The Saturdays - Missing You

Tulisa - Live It Up

I expected all these songs to go #1.
