Took Timbaland 8 years to get his first number 1 too! 1999 debut -> 2007 first #1

What about amount of singles released before the first number 1? Because it's not really fair to go on years. As some artists take longer breaks. I think The Sats have the same amount of albums released as Coldplay and Maroon 5 etc.. (or just short), but have done it with a lot less time etc... (releases as the main credit only - no features )

911 had 10 releases before hitting number 1 with their 11th release, 'A Little Bit More'.

Coldplay had 10 releases too before getting their first number 1.

Maroon 5 did it with their 12th release.

This will be The Saturdays' 14th release. My mind is drawing blanks when it comes to thinking of artists who seem to have taken a while to get a number 1, but from those I have checked up on, none of them come close to The Sats, so didn't bother mentioning them.

Counting only chart hits as the first credited artist, Jay-Z didn't get to #1 until his 21st top 75 single ('Run This Town'). I think he'd beat The Saturdays counting all appearances as lead and featured up to 'Crazy In Love' also (and that's arguably not even a #1 for him).

So there's one example. :P I'm sure there must be more.

('Run This Town' was also from his ELEVENTH studio album :o)

As far as I know, Tony Christie has the record for the biggest gap between chart debut and first #1. First hit was in 1971 and 'Amarillo' reached #1 in 2005.

It took Tony Christie 34 years to get a number 1 single. Go figure. :P If we're going by a technicality, it took the Stereophonics twenty one releases until they reached number 1 with Dakota in 2005.

Not necessarily the same but Tom Jones' gap between number 1s was a colossal 43 years between Green Green Grass... in 1966 and Islands in the Stream in 2009! Anything's possible ay?

Ha! I knew there'd be an obvious one that I didn't check up! (like you say though, I bet there's loads more!)
AND it took the Manic Street Preachers twenty six releases until their first number 1 with If You Tolerate This..., though oddly enough only seven years.

The only act that i can think of that released more singles than The Saturdays before getting their first #1 is Erasure - They hit the top spot with their 21st release 'Abba-esque EP' and had 11 Top 10 hits prior to reaching the top.

I think prince had 38 Top.75 singles between 1980-1993 before hitting the top with his 39th release of 'The most beautiful girl in the world'...not sure I can think of many longer...
Jamiroquai released their first single in 1993 - it was 5 years and 12 singles later in 1998 that they had their first (and so far only) number 1 with "Deeper Underground".
Just picking up on what was said earlier - red doesn't necessarily mean it's decreasing, it could be stable yet JT is just increasing.
Even if The Sats are decreasing surely they won't dip below 8-9k in sales today and tomorrow? Justin's been selling that at #2 all week and The Sats are still in front of him?

Stereophonics had nearly 20 releases before they got a no.1. Seems quite a few acts have taken their time getting one,
So there's still hope for Hurts then. Though just to get a decent single chart entry would be good.
