'Valerie' by Mark Ronson & Amy Winehouse. The Zutons' (superior) original has been severely overshadowed. :(

I prefer Amy's version. Mark Ronson's "Can't Hurry Love" drum beats INCLUDED.

Plus I would argue that they are equally well-known, Amy probably raising the profile of the Zutons' version.

Joe Mcelderry - Ambitions :kink:

You could also say this about his version of The Climb by Miley Cyrus, but I'm not sure. Also (only in the UK) A Moment Like This by Leona Lewis is another, originally by Kelly Clarkson in 2002 as her winner's single for American Idol.

Sound Of The Underground by Girls Aloud is technically a cover too, it was originally recorded in girl group Orchid in 2001, but I don't think it was ever released.

Even though the Zutons version was not long before the Ronson / Winehouse version, I would agree that the latter is now better known.

Just like the story behind P!nk's 'Try' too then - originally recorded by a male but not commercially released.

Leona Lewis - Run

No. Everyone knew it was a Snow Patrol cover at the time, and I'm fairly sure the Snow Patrol version gets a lot more plays and higher residual sales these days than Leona's.

Hallelujah perhaps? A lot of people think Jeff Buckley did the original I think.
'Impossible' (Shontelle/James Arthur) could be a recent addition to this list. Sadly 'People Help The People' has gone the same way as 'Skinny Love' also.

Birdy the song STEALER. I wouldn't mind, only she adds NOTHING to the originals. At least most of the covers in this thread are in some way different, interesting or a personal re-working of an original.

Justice would be for her to write a great song that totally flops, then 5 years later gets covered by an indie band and becomes a massive hit and never gets credited to her. Ha!

Not sadly..I would say "Happily Ever After"..I don't know why you hate Birdy so much but if you open your mind, you will appreciate her..:)

To be fair to her, she was about 15/16 when she recorded/released them. She turned them into piano ballads, did she not? And that really did show off her strong vocals. I suspect she'll start doing her own songs next time round.

UGH. Criminal. X-Factor should really just stop. :( I like Birdy's voice so I'll live with what she's done but she needs to get her own material next time.

Jamelia's 'Superstar' is one, I sort of knew it was a cover a while back but to find out the original (by Christine Milton) was released so soon before was quite surprising. They sound very similar as well, it seemed like it was more of a case of Jamelia taking it to be a hit outside Denmark. Still, that's one I doubt many people realise.

Ronan Keating - When You Say Nothing At All

DEFINITELY NOT.

Not sure if the asterix applies to 'All By Myself' as well, but if it does, I'd say 'All By Myself' was quite well-known because of Celine Dion. I think the original is by a male and I can hear it in my head, but I haven't a clue what he is called.

Sorry, should have made it clearer. It only applies to "The Power Of Love". :)

Should have put an asterix next to it. In the UK I would say it's fairly close. Both get around about the same residual sales (both always appear in the top 1500 of itunes and dart around it depending on the day of the week), although Snow Partol tend to have the better radio play. Leona's version tends to rise more in the winter time (especially when X-factor is on). But her version was a huge hit in parts of Central Europe and Iwould say is more known than Snow Partol's version there. It's a win-win situation either way, as Leona's version boosted the original a bit and they are earning tons from wiriting credits

Sorry, I should have kept it UK-only, I was thinking more so of a general view.

Another one to add is Chaka Khan - I Feel For You (Orginally by Prince).

Birdy the song STEALER.

I think that's very unfair, given she was only 14 at the time. :(

I wouldn't mind, only she adds NOTHING to the originals.

In any case, whenever I've heard the originals, I've always preferred Birdy's covers

The Fugees - Killing Me Softly originally by Petula Clark.

I'm sure a lot of Motown songs could feature in this thread - I don't think Marvin Gaye's version of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' is necessarily the original.

Also, Leona Lewis - Run.

Fans of mid-00s Indie will obviously remember the SP version but the general public would associate the song more with Leona since her version is constantly played on talent shows and it was far bigger than the original in both the UK and Europe.

XTM's Fly On The Wings Of Love is WAY better known in the UK than the original Olsen Brothers Eurovision winning version.
