Michael, do you feel better knowing EVEN Pink has been no.1 on iTunes this year....

NO! >( I don't know how this happened!

GaGa didn't manage no.1 when also-rans can do so easily with a bit of hype, even Ant and Dec got there with a 20 year old song.

I am expecting a Britney Spears-style #7 album :/

Irrelevant at the moment? Maybe. BUT maybe as ... someone said last night the point of this album isn't sales, but to get people back on side. If she does that, does endearing interviews, it may be all aboot the next era.

I don't think Gaga is flopping at all. It's doing really well! Once she releases the video (which I hope won't be an hour long) and airplay starts building, I'm sure she'll see a decent sized hit with "Applause".

In other news;

Leona Lewis "Run" to #122. It might not remain in the top 100 this week. :(

I can see GaGa getting a #1 album easily but I can see it selling less than Born This Way.

Hopefully Matt and Mel's performance of 'Loving You' on Daybreak tomorrow will give the single pre-order a boost! Currently at #193
Anyone else noticed that there are only two songs in the iTunes top 10 that were there two weeks ago? That's amazing after all these months of slow movement! :o

It's cause Blurred Lines is out of there finally!

Pink hasn't been at #1 on iTunes this year.

Unlike most of you I don't have records of who wasn't or was no.1 at what minute but I just assumed JGMAR got there at some point (certainly was with all versions combined). She's had an iTunes no.1 this era though because Blow Me definitely got there.

Blow Me certainly did get to #1 but it started tumbling down fast

I'm not sure if JGMAR got there too, but I think it did

Wow Gaga really is falling fast isn't she, both here and in the USA.Lana will over take in the UK within time, likewise for Thicke in the USA. The dire lyric video didn't have an impact then!

Of course it didn't.

Still devastated

I wonder if we're seeing what would've happened if Geri had never left the Spices, they really are a great parallel (thanks to Eric? for pointing it out). Gradual decline for the third album, BTW, then this for the fourth after a two year break.

I just don't get how the fan base collapsed so quickly? I can't make sense of that. The core fan base should be bigger.

It's more that her general appeal diminished rather than her fanbase, she's a lot more 'niche' now. I still say it's because 'Born This Way' (the song) killed a LOT of her credibility.

OMG have you seen that video of GaGa where she's saying she's a flop since Born this Way? :( Also said she;s no longer relevant.

Also, THIS Drake song gets top 10 whilst Started From the Bottom didn't?? It's Ellie Goulding Burn/ Anything Coud Happen all owa again.

Just Give Me a Reason was #1 on iTunes combined at least, and possibly individually, as it was #2 officially the week Ant & Dec got there and they weren't at the top on iTunes for the whole week. #3 was The Saturdays and I don't remember them going back to #1 on iTunes once they dropped down.

Gaga isn't flopping, a top 5 single on no airplay can't be a flop. Underperforming? Maybe, but as I said, it hasn't got a video or much airplay yet so it could have longevity. We'll see.

Her fanbase hasn't gone and she's not going to disappear like the Spice Girls or flop like Britney did with Femme Fatale. I think some people need to start thinking rationally towards the reception of Applause:
  • She still has a massive fanbase, Twitter represents this. She's the 3rd most followed person on Twitter if I remember correctly? Her Born This Way Ball was ENORMOUS. Her fanbase is most definitely there and she is still VERY relevant.
  • 'Applause' was never on pre-order so it was going to have a hardtime getting to #1 to begin with. It's also had no airplay prior to its release, the video hasn't even dropped yet and she hasn't done ANY promo yet. So the result it's had on iTunes is actually quite impressive in comparison to other #1s which have had huge airplay and pre-orders behind them prior to their release.
  • Also, does anyone remember Bad Romance and the chart run it had? Applause is actually doing better than Bad Romance in its first week and when Bad Romance debuted where it did were people saying her career is over/she's a flop blah blah? Like Bad Romance, Applause has plenty of time to rebound and peak and be a hit!
  • She's not coming off the back of a HUGE era this time, a lot of people are tending to forget this when they are comparing it to Born This Way. So this single being released OA/OS was obviously not going to set the charts alight like BTW did in its first week.
  • The album is only released on 11 NOVEMBER!!!!11!1 She's got all that time up until then to promote and sell 'Applause' as well as a possibly KILLER 2nd single.
  • 'Applause' is doing its job in showing the public she's back with the fun pop the public loved her for during her first era. It's basically a song that's intended to console Gaga's relationship with the general public outside her fanbase that criticized her so heavily the last era so that they can jump back on board with her like they were doing during The Fame/Monster era.
  • Give her a damn break!

You're not doing her any favour by comparing 'Applause' to 'Bad romance'. 'Bad romance' was amazing, 'Applause' is not.

She's falling everywhere, she was (kinf of) number 1 in France and now she's already down to #3 and keeps falling.

'Born this way' was really radio friendly and was a big pop number with an actual melody, if anything 'Born this way' is a lot more crafted for the general public than 'Applause' is. I get that she is stepping back to 'The fame' kind of sound but the song has nothing on the big songs of that era, that's the problem and there is no need to over-analyse it. It's just not one of her best songs and I'm not surprised if it flops in the end.

People seem to forget that Drake made "Started From the Bottom" available as a free download just before releasing it onto iTunes. I imagined a chunk of the 'first week fanbase' will have just chosen to download it from there; I know I did (though would never have paid 99p for such a sub-par lead single).

Nice to see Drake back in the iTunes T10 though, wonder if people are just jumping at any decent hip-hop/rap music after all the dance music in the charts this year (likewise with Arctic Monkeys).
