Good to see Royals ahead of James Arthur. Lets hope they can maintain or even increase their lead unless Gaga beats them both which I don't mind.

oooh a little dickie bird has flown in

Top 3 singles are all new with Lorde on sales off 37.3k, James Arthur on sales off 31.7k and Showtek on sales 18.4k

Top 2 albums Katy Perry on sales of 20.8k with James Blunt on sales of 14.6k

I thought Katy Perry was selling 5 times as many copies as the number two? Well that's what somebody has said on here. Those sales for albums look very poor.

Okay, I didn't expect anyone to actually fall for it, so I'm gonna end the joke here.

In My Dreams ‏@pleasecanthishappen 44s :(

What does it say about the state of the album market that a new album from one of the world's biggest current stars selling 100k first week is a joke you didn't think people would fall for? :(
Katy's last album only did a bit over 50k first week. She's not really a huge album seller (though I thought 'Prism' might be doing SLIGHTLY better than this, it'll still be good for her to get another #1), at least not as much as she is a huge single seller.
Hasn't 'Teenage Dream' sold over a million and her debut has sold so well for an album that hasn't (?) reached the top 10.
at least not as much as she is a huge single seller.

I think it's fair to say Katy, like Rihanna is the sort of artist who sells albums in accordance with how big the singles are. Teenage Dream was packed with smash after smash and while I'm not quite so sure Prism is to the same degree, if they get the choices right it should sell very well over time.

'Unconditionally' could send its sales rocketing I reckon.

Sorry! I'm on my phone and didnt read past the first sentence before getting defensive over the princess of pop (Kelly C is clearly the Queen with her new Xmas album *.*)

I apologise. Silly fan mistake ;p

I just haven't seen any compelling ~evidence~ that pre-orders are any more prominent than they were before, the only thing that's changed is a shift from EP pre-orders to single pre-orders :P

This is on topic! Kind of.

My final word on this is that a released song would find far more overall sales than a song that sits as a preorder for 6-8 weeks esp if it takes off and goes top 10 whether it's OA/OS or not, from looking at the biggest sellers this year but each song is different.

I also understand its hard to find compelling evidence for this for all songs so il leave it at that and appreciate Bre etc have a different point of view which makes as much sense ;)

From the OCC's facebook page:

There's no stopping Emeli Sandé! Her debut album Our Version Of Events was the biggest-selling album of 2012 and has now passed another massive milestone – it's broken through the two-million sales barrier.

That's 2 million more than it should have sold. :puke:

Wouldn't be surprised to see Reconnected in the Top 40 with their single 'Timr Of Our Lives' - Their last single went Top 40 and I definitely think they are being 'helped' - The new single reached #89 on iTunes and disappeared immediately however they have 10 versions of the song in the Top 100 Amazon chart and 3 versions of the EP - Chart fixing? lol

Midweek Charts: Royals aiming for chart crown

Lorde's Hot 100 chart-topping Royals is leading midweek singles as Katy Perry takes charge of artist albums.

The New Zealander's Virgin-issued single, which has been heading the Billboard chart for three weeks with 2.7 million US download sales to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan, has opened up a lead of around 7,000 sales on the Official Charts Company's midweek singles countdown in the UK.

Royals' biggest competition comes from 2012 X Factor winner James Arthur whose second Syco release You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You is new at 2 in the week so far as Interscope/Poldyor act OneRepublic's Counting Stars drops to 3, having returned to No 1 last Sunday.

Virgin could be on course for a double No 1 celebration this coming weekend with Katy Perry's Prism matching Lorde's chart-topping status on midweek singles by leading artist albums. Boosted by an appearance by Perry on Graham Norton's BBC One chat show last Friday and a performance over the weekend on ITV's The X Factor, it has sold around 30,000 copies in the week so far as it aims to become her second UK No 1 album after Teenage Dream.

Behind Perry at No 2 is Atlantic's James Blunt who is clearly benefitting from his Top 10 single Bonfire Heart with its parent album Moon Landing looking on course to beat the No 4 debut and peak of its predecessor Some Kind Of Trouble in 2010. His previous two albums - Back To Bedlam and All The Lost Souls - both reached No 1.

Island's John Newman drops 1-3 with Tribute, while sales of Nettwerk act Passenger's All The Little Lights are up 78% on the week to lift it 9-4 after its hit Let Her Go was performed by contestant Luke Friend on The X Factor last Saturday. The track itself rises 24-16 on midweek singles with sales up 88%.

Decca's Andrea Bocelli could be on course for his second Top 10 album of the year after Passione with Love In Portofino registering as a new entry at 6 at this stage of the week. Behind it at 7 is Global Talent/Polydor act Lawson's debut album Chapman Square, which rises from 171 followng the release of a expanded version with 18 tracks. These include their current single Juliet, which drops 3-11 in the midweeks.

Capitol act Andrea Begley, this year's winner of BBC One's The Voice UK, is new at 10 with debut album The Message, while Domino's Arctic Monkeys are looking to return to the top five with AM, which rises 6-5 in the midweeks. London Grammar's Metal & Dust Recordings/Ministry of Sound album If You Wait could return to the Top 10, having risen 11-8 at this stage of the week, while Sony Classical's Jonathan & Charlotte drop 5-9 with Perhaps Love.

Earth Wind & Fire are set for a chart return with Now Then & Forever, their first studio album in total since 2005 and first back with Sony since 1990's Heritage, new at 21 in the midweeks, while Robin Thicke's Interscope/Polydor set Blurred Lines races 69-22 with sales up 267% after he performed the title track on The X Factor. On course to join it in or around the Top 40 on Sunday are brand new albums from Memphis Industries' Polica, K Scope's Steven Wilson and Republic/Island's AFI.

Back on singles and Lorde and James Arthur are joined in the Top 10 by three other tracks debuting at retail this week. Polydor-signed Dutch EDM act Showtek's Booyah featuring We Are Loud and Sonny Wilson is new at 4, while Union J's second RCA single Beautiful Life is new at 6. Def Jam/Virgin EMI's Justin Bieber is heading for his third hit single in as many weeks with Hold Tight new at 9 at this stage of the week.

Sales of Virgin act Katy Perry's chart-topping Roar rocket 59% to lift it 6-5 after she performed it on The X Factor, while Miley Cyrus's RCA single Wrecking Ball drops 2-7 and James Blunt's Atlantic-issued Bonfire Heart is down 4-8. Interscope/Polydor's Eminem completes the Top 10 with Rap God down 5-10.

Atlantic act Jason Mraz is heading for another chart revival with I Won't Give Up, which rises 34-15 on the midweeks after X Factor contestant Sam Callahan covered it, while brand new singles heading in or around the Top 40 include tracks from Atlantic's Icona Pop, Big Machine/Virgin EMI's Taylor Swift, 3 Beat/AATW's Sway, Cash Money/Republic's Tyga & Justin Bieber, Atlantic's Sean Paul and Dirtee Skank/Island's Dizzee Rascal
