The Pogues are gaining on Mariah even with her streaming advantage and are actually marginally ahead of her on sales alone now! *.* Thank you based iTunes 59p offers. (I expect Mariah will still just about be ahead on Sunday but if The Pogues can hold up their sales lead throughout next week they could well overtake).

They do look to both be on course for a comfortable top 20 position anyway as I had predicted :D Wham! could sneak into the top 40 by Sunday as well.

For comparison the Xmas song positions this week last year:

14 Mariah

16 The Pogues

34 Leona

37 Wizzard

44 Wham!

56 Shakin' Stevens

57 Slade

62 Band Aid

67 Brenda Lee

72 Chris Rea

79 Kelly Clarkson

89 East 17

92 The Killers

98 Andy Williams

Poor Union J :(

It should still be their highest charting single, so good for them.

Oh and it's funny how Ed has been outselling Take That's album for the last two days

Ed Sheeran's consistent album sales are so beautiful

I wonder if 'x' will outsell its predecessor :o. It certainly has a lot of further sales potential with regard to future singles (looking at you in particular 'Afire Love' and 'Runaway', don't let me down fellas).

Yaaaassss somebody who thinks that Runaway should be a single too. :cheer:

I want I'm a Mess as the next single. Aside from the two you mentioned, I think Photograph could do well too.

Not sure 'poor Union J' holds much weight when you consider what their fortunes would have been without X Factor :P. The very fact they're on course for a top 3 single and the best lead-in to their album in terms of prominence/relevance that they've had yet is a huge success for them!

15k in a day for Ed Sheeran is huge! :o

If the albums keep selling the same amount they did yesterday for the rest of the week, the Top 10 should easily beat this time last year:

Do They Know It's Christmas? is at 11 on Wednesday's update.

So to all those who said that "the number one was sorted until when the X Factor Winner's Single came out", eat your words! :D

I wouldn't be surprised if Band Aid 30 returns to #1 next Sunday, following the physical release. Actually, I'd be more surprised if it didn't

But I guess it depends on whether the charts reflect the mood, or the charts affect the mood, if you see what I mean

If it's more the former, then I think it's more likely to return to #1

Slightly disappointed with sales so far, expected double if I'm honest...but for any artist to get a #1 single and then the week after sell over 100,000 albums is a great achievement, especially one that is nearly 25 years into it's career.

It will be their 7th number 1 album too which is great

I didn't think physical CD singles were selling.much anymore? The physical release is bound to impact on the chart position but can't see it returning to no1 unless downloads and streaming increase.

YAY! :cheer: We've only been waiting for sales like this for the whole year!!!

GooglePlay really does wonders for the albums charts!

Also, if that stays the same, when was the last time we had an ALL MALE (or all female) albums chart top 10? :o

Last all-male top 10 was only 12 weeks ago, I think it's happened a few times this year.

1 1 16 Sam Smith In The Lonely Hour

2 N 1 Robert Plant And The Sensational Space Shifters lullaby and... The Ceaseless Roar

3 3 12 Ed Sheeran x

4 2 3 Royal Blood Royal Blood

5 5 11 George Ezra Wanted On Voyage

6 N 1 Ryan Adams Ryan Adams

7 49 506 Bob Marley & The Wailers Legend - The Best Of (424wks T75)

8 8 22 Paolo Nutini Caustic Love

9 N 1 Interpol El Pintor

10 6 4 Collabro Stars

Thrilled Union J won't be getting a #1 :cheer:, although it still leaves utter dirge at the top. :nocheer:

Indeed only difference was there wasn't as many new releases on week beginning 1/12!

The day people realise Ed Sheeran is utter trash needs to come quick please.

I wouldn't say I had particularly strong feelings either way, but he does sound pretty good on that Sons of Anarchy song.

Please could you tell me where is Susan Boyle on the Thursday update? Thank you

On another date with her first ever boyfriend maybe. :o Yes, a rich American apparently and he can't be accused of being after her money as he reportedly has far more than her. :o
