Cowell killed Christmas - but those that bought-in to the X-Factor are just as much to blame IMO.

You can't reverse what's happened, the damage is done now.

I disagree. I don't think it's impossible that the idea of competing for the Christmas Number 1 could come back when X Factor dies for good - and it will.

SINGLES

The battle for this year’s Christmas Number 1 looks to be a fierce contest between Justin Bieber and the NHS Choir; and things remain very close on today’s Official Chart Update.

After leading the race over the weekend, the Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Choir’s A Bridge Over You has been edged out by Justin Bieber’s Love Yourself, which takes a narrow lead of just 3,000 combined sales at the halfway stage of the chart week. But with the NHS Choir leading the way on downloads and Bieber amassing lots of streaming equivalent sales, the battle is far from over yet!

Other festive chart contenders in today’s Update Top 40 are Louisa Johnson’s Forever Young at Number 6, and Stormzy’s Shut Up at Number 8. Three Christmas Number 1 contenders are currently outside the Top 40: Lethal Bizzle’s Going To The Gym at 70, John Williams’ Star Wars theme at 83 and Shakin’ Stevens’ Echoes Of Merry Christmas Everyone at 100. Check out the full list of this year’s contenders here.

Elsewhere, Justin Bieber’s Sorry is at Number 3 mid-week, One Direction’s History could be entering this week’s Top 10, climbing from 11 to 10 today, and Craig David’s When The Bassline Drops is on track to enter the Top 40 this week, currently at 34.

Finally, six festive classics are currently inside the Top 40: Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You (13), The Pogues ft Kirsty MacColl’s Fairytale Of New York (14), Wham’s Last Christmas (22), Shakin’ Stevens’ Merry Christmas Everyone (29), Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday (33) and Chris Rea’s Driving Home For Christmas (37).

Sales and streams of songs between 00.01am on Friday, December 18 and midnight on Thursday, December 24 will count towards the 2015 Official Christmas Singles Chart.

ALBUMS

Having already made chart history with 25 – now the fastest 2 million-selling album in the UK ever – Adele continues to hold on to her Number 1 position, shifting massive units.

Three days into the chart week, the singer has shifted another 160,000 copies of the record-breaking collection.

There’s little change in the remainder of today’s Update Top 5, made up of Elvis Presley’s If I Can Dream (2), Justin Bieber’s Purpose (3), Coldplay’s A Head Full of Dreams (4) and Jess Glynne’s I Cry When I Laugh (5).

New entries and high climbers

Outside the Top 10, Chris Brown’s new album Royalty debuts at Number 14 today. The singer’s seventh solo studio collection follows his collaborative Fan Of A Fan record with Tyga, which hit Number 7 back in March this year.

Following its record-breaking opening weekend at the box office, Star Wars’ The Force Awakens OST – helmed by legendary composer John Williams - goes straight in at Number 15.

Elsewhere, two Christmas albums make gains on today’s Update: Michael Buble’s Christmas jumps from 15 to 12, and Kylie Minogue’s Christmas leaps up four places from 22 to 18.

Wizzard seem to have gone up rather dramatically - according to OCC anyway

I think that may be an OCC error! I guess they mean the record is at number 33 or something like that...

"Three Christmas Number 1 contenders are currently outside the Top 40" - so they're not Number 1 contenders then

Major ouch at Bizzle dropping from #11 to #70 in a DAY. His fanbase has evaporated post-Fester Skank.

So another year without Xmas songs in the top 10 it seems, only way it'll happen is when the chart is a day after Christmas day I think.

Come on NHS - Get that media exposure and a few more performances in on daytime TV and snatch that #1

Again a 3,000 lead doesn't make sense on the data we have. Surely Bieber's streaming units means it's much further clear than that at this stage?

This could potentially be the 1st time Sorry will leave the Top 2

We tend to be missing the day before's Spotify data in every midweek update. So this update will most likely exclude Sunday's streaming as it won't have been reported on time.
That would seem most likely Joseph. But why not just tell us - it's misleading if they don't.

I don't think they really see it as a problem at the midweek stage! The data is either all included, or upweighted to represent a full week of data, by Friday :D

sure Sunday streaming is missing and JB is 10K ahead

Adele looks like she'll sell 400k+ this week then if she's done 160k in 3 days.

Could the top 5 all be on for 100k+ this week? I think it's likely.
