May 5, 20169 yr Mr Blobby beating Take That, who were on a run of consecutive number ones, to the Christmas Number 1. Massive upset and hilarious.
May 5, 20169 yr To chime in on the House Every Weekend/Shine thing: I never hear HEW since it was released. As said though, Shine as a pop song probably has more broad appeal than a house/dance song. I personally also don't get House Every Weekend - just one of those tracks where its harder to break down why it would be a big hit
May 5, 20169 yr I hear HEW loads at clubs too. I don't think I've ever heard Shine at a club to be honest. But Shine is like a mid tempo song, it's nowhere near as dancey so I guess that kind of explains that. I still hear Shine on the radio loads though, still played on Radio 1, Capital and Kiss a few times a week whereas I can't remember the last time I heard HEW on the radio. Yeah, both are different types of songs so they'll be remembered more in different environments. I still hear 'House' on the radio a lot though, mostly on a Friday/Saturday night mind, opposed to daytime radio, which 'Shine' gets a lot of (but is still overshadowed by 'King' and 'Eyes Shut' though :().
May 5, 20169 yr Being old..first I remember is when The Beatles failed to reach number one with "Penny lane/Strawberry fields forever"..pipped by Engelbert Humperdink. I remember being extremely annoyed lol.(I was 14). First time since Please Please me they didn't get the top spot. Made the front page headlines.
May 5, 20169 yr Many Christmas songs but Mariah Carey All I Want For Chritsmas is You. I also remember been disappointed with Elvis Presley beating Kylie's Love at First Sight to Number 1 when it was one her best singles. In contrast i do remember many people been shocked that Kylie herself held off the comeback single by Michael Jackson to number 1 be retaining a fourth week at number 1 with Cant Get You Out Of My Head.
May 5, 20169 yr In 1995 beatles first new song in 25 years free as a bird was a shock no.2 behind jacko
May 5, 20169 yr Idina Menzel's version of Let It Go being a much bigger hit than Demi Lovato's version (Demi's version being the more 'radio-friendly' version).

Yeh I was shocked MJ didn't get to no1 with You Rock My World although Kylies was one of the biggest pop songs of the decade tbf!
May 6, 20169 yr Scooter knocking Madonna off the #1 album in 2008 was one of the most incredible for me. They were never as big here as in Germany and other European countries (except in Scotland where they always did well) so to come back from nowhere with the highest charter of their career - six years after their one genuinely huge hit single - was pretty special. I remember being in HMV that week and a group of teenagers saw the album and virtually screamed "OH MY GOD SCOOTER!!" and snapped it up straight away - that's when I knew they was gonna sell way better than expected!
May 6, 20169 yr Apologies if this has already been mentioned but can't see it. Katie Melua and Eva Cassidy going to No.1 with What A Wonderful World that was only available in Tesco's as far as I can remember.
May 6, 20169 yr I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the 'Meet Me Halfway'/'Happy' moment... or was that just an upset for Leona fans? :kink: I still remember the chart prediction poll thread for 'Happy' on Buzzjack back in 2009 - pretty much everyone (bar one or two) predicted that 'Happy' would be a guaranteed #1. I'm sure there were even a few comments along the lines of "does there even need to be a poll?" etc. Then everything went tits up for Leona when BEP bagged the same XF slot as Leona.  Also in 2009, I think many expected (or were at least hoping) 'Man In the Mirror' to give Michael Jackson a posthumous #1 but Cascada of all artists robbed him of it.
