What is the excuse for this then?

Starmer certainly isn't getting the same hostile media treatment or treatment from within the party that Corbyn did — and yet he is just mere points away from Corbyn's worst approval rating.

No excuse for it at all, both Labour and Starmer are polling pretty badly right now but I'm not sure what else could be expected when Labour have just had their worst ever results according to the media and a certain faction (and they weren't even that bad). Starmer was always the best of a bad bunch.
Give him a proper year without a pandemic to deal with is what I say!
Is the tweet that bad? Clumsy yes but PritinPatel is an extremely bigoted piece of work who will do her best to cause pain and suffering to thousands of innocent people. Not to mention she’s a bully.
I do wish people would just take a moment to think before sending off a tweet, especially those in the public eye.

I literally have no issue with it. It obviously isn't a serious suggestion and is just pointing out the irony of Patel's proposals.

When did everyone start having to be "on" all the time? Sheesh...

The only reason anyone who otherwise supports deportations as an issue with this is as a stick to beat te opposition with.

I guess tweeting from what may be a professional account is the issue here which is stupid from the normal reasons. But that's just an online literacy issue.

He has seemingly been suspended from the Labour Party. Good.

This is however a function of how the Tories are weaponising the identity of people like Patel to make it harder for them to be attacked when they implement racist policies, he could have done the same 'let's deport you for being so callous Home Secretary' tweet to a white male Home Secretary and no one would have batted an eye.

Also, this, exactly.

It was obvious that he said to deport her on the basis of her policies and not her race. But quelle surprise the Tory media weaponise this and the focus comes about a clumsy tweet rather than the institutionally racist Conservative government creating a hostile environment for migrants and other minorities. And they call the Left wing the racists.

Seemed like the Labour Party were the ones to weaponise it!

He would still need to become an MP again first. My guess would be Angela Rayner challenging before that, or someone from the right of the party if Starmer loses the next by-election massively and the polls continue to plummet.
I always thought Burnham was going to be leader after Gordon Brown!

I mean, the same jokes were being made for Theresa May to be deported in 2010-2016 when she was at the GO HOME office. you can clearly see from the context that there is nothing inherently racist or distasteful about the tweet, he deleted it straight away and apologised, so it's a bit of a non-story IMO and should end there. Of course it has been used by those with bad intentions to put forward or legitimise criticism of those who kind of find turning up outside the house of a Muslim on Eid at dawn and chucking them in the back of an immigration van is absolutely fine in a supposedly free and fair society... anyway this is exactly why I think I would never go on Twitter or any social media and those with big public profiles should definitely have some sort of filter to check for this kind of thing - we have it at work ' does this pass the Daily fail test'? . The irony though of anybody on the right condemning this (disingenously when they know the context) and asking for him to be removed from his public responsibilities whilst simultansouly screaming "FReE SPeeCh!!1!" and the 'woke cancel culture' of the left. Get out of it!

PS - this story in Glasgow is incredibly heartwarming. *.*

Ah, I've seen people harassing Nadia Whittome on Twitter for daring to go against 'the rule of law' for tweeting in support of that one. Good that the population can stand up to these Home Office tyrants in some respects.

Labour needs to end the hostile environment and ideally should campaign on such.

Labour needs to accept that it is despised by half the country, just as the Tories are despised by the other half, and appeal to the half it can get. It doesn't need a majority, just a plurality across left-ish parties, so that it can bring in PR and end this dystopian nightmare once and for all.

This current leadership will not bring in PR.

If they don't, they are absolute idiots. I hope Rayner stages a coup against Starmer, just like the centrists kept doing vs Jeremy.
