Thanks Houdini. The iTunes thread used to get around 50 pages? Wow

Yeah it was quite mental! There was one that I read that had to be made into "part II". The week when Rudimental were at number one with Feel The Love.

Outside of 'gift card' weeks, the biggest week for downloads was the one that ended on 31 March 2013 with 3,734,160 paid-for single sales (though this figure includes minimal physical sales) - the next 3 biggest weeks were all in June/July 2013 with just over 3.6 million paid-for single sales when huge singles from Daft Punk, Robin Thicke/Pharrell and Avicii were all selling huge amounts.

The 52-week rolling mean peaked in February 2013 so I'd say that was around the time that the market peaked.

It is now around 40-45% of the size it was back then, equivalent to where the market was in the autumn of 2007.

Thanks for this info Doctor Blind. Figures like these will probably never be reached for downloads ever again in the UK.

I will have a look at the iTunes thread for the week ending 31 March 2013 at some point!

I'm quite impressed that it's still at that level actually, considering streaming has become so dominant and listening habits have changed so hugely.

But downloads are dying a slow death just as physicals did in a long drawn out way during the 00s.

Safe to say they will never reach those levels again, now so many people have switched to streaming, short of all streaming services shutting down  But even then I'm not sure it would bring people back to download sites in their droves, too much has passed, people would probably just flock more to Youtube and Soundcloud.

There was once a time where the thread was not weekly, rather just one long running thread that would be started afresh once 50 pages were reached.

But there have been times where we got 50 pages in a week.

• 'Loreen week' where she briefly made iTunes #1 following Eurovision, before being overtaken by Rudimental who'd claim the official #1.

• 'The Saturdays week', the week where they finally got a number one single so obviously lots of looning happened, prompting...

• ...'John Loonman week' where fans of John Newman and The Saturdays battled it out to see who could be the most pathetic loons when 'Love Me Again' and 'Gentleman' were released

• 'Gaga week'. 'Applause' was unexpectedly released, needn't say more!

• 'Icona Pop week'. A huge forum favourite that finally got a UK release and went to #1.

Gaga week was also Katy Perry 'Roar' week? Or did I get that wrong?

Worldwide you'd be correct! But that was back in the days where most tracks got put on pre-order, so Roar was held back for a couple of months :drama:

Yeah both released same week although Applause came a few days later I think.

EDIT: Oop. Joseph is correct. Forgot about the held-back release!

It seems crazy now to think that 'Roar' was available worldwide weeks before it was available in the UK!

Ah Autumn 2007 when Leona broke 200k in a week and Take That came in at no2 just under 100k at 98k which at the time I thought was unreal as other than Xmas/charity releases the download era had yet to take off with huge impacting no1s!!

So pleased for this! Hope she has some promo lined up - I really thought this campaign was over after 'Bones' failed to trouble the Top 100 and the album only spent 4 weeks in the Top 100. Hope she can sustain the renewed interest!
