I know "Je t'aime... moi non plus" was a UK #1 not in the English language.

Is "Despacito" (possibly) only the second UK #1 in a foreign language?

Las Ketchup were also #1 back in the day. They did have parts of the song in English though.

There was also:

Julio Iglesias - 'Begin The Beguine' (1981, Spanish)

Falco - 'Rock Me Amadeus' (1985, German)

Los Lobos - 'La Bamba' (1987, Spanish)

Enigma - 'Sadeness (Part I)' (1990, Latin/French)

Yolanda Be Cool - 'We No Speak Americano' (2010, Italian)

Psy - 'Gangnam Style' (2012, Korean)

In the context of "all of One Direction's singles were immediate #1s or top 3s so the solo things also have to be" bracket that the press will measure them by it probably is. See also the Spice Girls' immediate solo efforts 15 years ago.

But taken on its own merits Niall has actually turned out some decent singles so far. And I'm not even a 1D fan! Once a video and some promo is out in the ether it will improve, provided it's not lost in a backwash of Harry and Liam releases.

Zayn hasn't gone top 10 with anything except his debut / zaylor thing though right

Correct, although that's quite a big "except" when he's only put out 4 singles as a lead artist :kink:

I can't believe I had forgotten that 'Gangnam Style' was UK number 1 for only 1 week. :o

Eh, Sexy Lady is in English, right? :P

Yolanda Be Cool - 'We No Speak Americano' (2010, Italian)

This is actually in Neapolitan which is different to (although largely mutually intelligible with) Italian. #funfact

napolitan is just a dialect, not a language :) even if the topic is controversial :)

there's been also some #1 songs with parts in Spanish like Loca People or Hips Don't Lie

Wasnt the version of Rock Me Amadeus released in the UK, a German/English mix (reducing German lyrics?)

Yes, had some English. Chanson D'Amour by Manhattan Transfer, No.1 in 1977, had some French too.

Gangnam style and Despacito don't really ocunt though as they both have English so they aren't solely in foreign languages
Rock Me Amadeus's title and hook are in English anyway, unless my German's not up to scuff and 'Rock Me' is also a German phrase...

"Rock me" is a German phrase in as much as it's how a native German speaker would say that.
