December 20, 20178 yr The US chart always was a bit weird and controlled!! Was? "Always was" can include now. The phrase "January always was a cold month in the UK" doesn't mean that it isn't cold any more.
December 20, 20178 yr Actually what really prevented it from charting back in 1994 was the fact that it wasn't released as a physical single thus being ineligible to chart on hot 100. It wasn't until 1998 that airplay-only singles were allowed to chart on hot 100. Ah, I didn't know this - was the Christmas song ban not also in effect back then as well though? I'm sure I remember reading that the rule change a few years back was the first time Christmas songs were ever allowed into the chart but maybe I'm just remembering that wrong.
December 20, 20178 yr It would be wonderful if Mariah Carey can beat her original number 9 peak in the States with All I Want For Christmas Is You. Its peak of #9 has literally only just been achieved! This is its first week inside the US Top 10. Prior to this week its peak was #11 (from 2015). Ah, I didn't know this - was the Christmas song ban not also in effect back then as well though? I'm sure I remember reading that the rule change a few years back was the first time Christmas songs were ever allowed into the chart but maybe I'm just remembering that wrong. Billboard have written an article about the situation with Mariah (and the eligibility of other Christmas hits over the years!) - Notably, for several years in the Hot 100's history (1963-72; 1983-85, barring occasional exceptions), holiday songs were not eligible to chart, instead appearing on separate holiday rankings. ~~ As for the Chart History of Carey's 'Christmas': So, what are the details behind a song from 1994 just hitting the Hot 100's top 10 now, for the first time? Upon its initial release, on Carey's album Merry Christmas (released on Nov. 1, 1994; coincidentally, that marked the 100th anniversary of the first Billboard magazine, dated Nov. 1, 1894), the song was not a commercially available single and, per rules at the time, was ineligible to chart on the Hot 100; it did reach No. 12 on the Radio Songs chart that season. In December 1998, album cuts became eligible for the Hot 100 and "Christmas" dented the chart for the first time on Jan. 8, 2000, spending a week at No. 83. Beginning in 2012, and coinciding with the addition of streaming to the Hot 100's formula, the song has hit the Hot 100 annually, as, per current rules, older songs are eligible to debut or return if ranking in the top 50 and are gaining in multiple metrics with a significant reason for their resurgences. In the 2015-16 holiday season, "Christmas" hit a prior No. 11 Hot 100 high, which it matched last week before hitting the top 10 at last this week. Again, with streaming contributing 70 percent of the song's Hot 100 chart points this week, the metric has clearly helped the track reach the top 10 at last. From: https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/...-hot-100-top-10 What they don't mention is a rule about recurrent singles which prevented it from re-entering for a few years: The song topped the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart in December 2005, but it was unable to attain a new peak on the Billboard Hot 100 chart because it was considered a recurrent single and was thus ineligible for chart re-entry. Every December from 2005 to 2008, the song topped the Billboard Hot 100 Re-currents chart. In 2012, after the recurrent rule was revised to allow all songs in the top 50 onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the single re-entered the chart at No. 29 and peaked at number 21 for the week ending January 5, 2013.
December 20, 20178 yr funny fact All I Want for Christmas is you is the first time ever that a song with the word Christmas goes top 10 in the US, just shows how difficult it is for Xmas song there and yes in 94 they didn't release it as a CD single, which was a concious decision just to sell more albums, so it's not like the song was excluded for a technicality, the label knew it was not gonna be able to chart if they didn't release it as cd single but preferred to have higher album sales instead, that was common in the mid 90s, for instance No Dount - Don't Speak, classic of classics, never charted in the US for the same reason, they preferred to sell albums so they never released Don't Speak as CD single so it couldn't chart, but then Tragic Kingdom, the parent album, sold more so... it's a bit like not putting your songs in spotify to sell more CDs
December 20, 20178 yr I think Hot 100 is a fantastic chart as it uses several metrics. There are flaws but they are always trying to keep it up to date as the measuring technologies evolve.

December 20, 20178 yr I don’t like how Ed is closing in on Eminem in the albums. Hope Eminem gets it. Ed can f*** off
December 20, 20178 yr Come on Eminem! If Ed gets the double I'll be fuming, I'm absolutely sick of him.
December 20, 20178 yr Music Week article about Perfect http://www.musicweek.com/talent/read/the-p...t-topper/070905
December 20, 20178 yr “How Team Ed Sheeran turned Perfect into a festive chart-topper“ more like “How Team Ed Sheeran stole a posthumous number one from George Michael”
December 20, 20178 yr That is a worryingly big gain on Eminem's album by Ed... I hope I'm not getting the latter for Christmas
December 20, 20178 yr Album battle going to the wire - still think Ed has the slight advantage though - the standard edition has increased in price to £9.99 (from £6.99) but is still top of Amazon Best Sellers. Supermarket Sales are probably more of a factor at this time of the year than any other time and these will continue to be strong today and tomorrow for Ed. Edited December 20, 20178 yr by timjimlee
December 20, 20178 yr but it's a 20K difference do you guys know much did Eminem and Ed's albums sell yesterday? (so that we can estimate where they will finish at?
December 20, 20178 yr I will be pissed off if We beats Eminem. Eminem album is really good and deserves it. Really need yesterday's sales.
December 20, 20178 yr Curiously in the Tesco CD Best Sellers chart Ed Sheeran does not feature, all versions of Divide are out of Stock, may be less a factor than originally thought.
