Radio 1's Big Weekend: Saturday

So yesterday I went to Big Weekend, my 4th overall. The crowd as easily the loudest I have ever encountered, but thats not always a bad thing.

Firstly I went to watch the Jonas Brothers, before this concert I was definitely not a fan of their music, however they have changed my opinion on them significantly. They are a talented and respectable band who play their own instruments and harmonise very well together.

ArrDee then came on stage, he can command the audience very well. Despite the crowd being significantly smaller ArrDee managed to make a "ArrDee Party" (In His Words) happen. Screaming out the lyrics to "Body" was a total out of body experience.

I saw a little bit of Mimi Webb but I decided to leave after a couple of songs. It didn't feel like there was anything special about how she performed.

Then it was 30 Seconds To Mars! I was so hyped to see them play in the Uk for the first time in 5 years, I would've liked to hear 'Stuck' live. But after no one came on stage to perform following a 40 minutes wait after the set was meant to begin, a large message appeared on the main screens. They said that there had been technical difficulties. 5 minutes later Jack Saunders brought the bad news, It was a painful wait as I could even see the band from the side of the stage, including Jared in a big white fluffy costume (Another tribute to Choupette?).

Then Jess Glynne came on. The crowd didn't react well to this one honestly, although they were pretty nice about her performing 'Hold My Hand'. She really wound-up some people when she said "Welcome To Jess Glynne Airways" before the song, I heard so many "Oh God! No!"s and even a "Use TUI Instead" remark. I thought she didn't make a wise decision towards the end though, she played 'Silly Me' last. Not a great way to transition into the next (High-energy) act.

Joel Corry had the most active crowd of the day, easily. His mixes were pretty good and all was well until a clearly drunk woman stumbled across to me, put her hand on my hips and in a very unattractive, lewd way she screamed "Daddy" at my face, I told her that she needed Jesus and she threw up on my face in response. I missed the end of his set as I had to go wash the vomit off.

I was back in time for a legend though, Headie One. I show full of his DJ screaming "When I say Headie you say One, Headie, One, Headie" etc. It had the bangers though, and he brought

Martin's Sofa (Yes the actual sofa) on stage. He even talked about it for a while. He actually sold the sofa quite well to the audience, he would make a good furniture store salesman. He also brought some special guests on, RV was on for pretty much the whole show and Jbee also came on to perform '4AM".

Then It was The 1975. I've never seen them live before but I am a huge fan so I was very hyped for the performance. They opened with one of my favourite tracks from them 'If You're Too Shy (Let Me Know). It was followed up with 'Happiness', but I had to leave then as I am currently injured. It took me over an hour to walk back to my car but I heard their full set on the way back.

There was also a thing called the photobooth where you can meet Radio 1 presenters & Artists. I met Jack Saunders, he a really nice genuine person. I told him I've listened to every one of his charts and he immediately embraced and thanked me. We had a good chat and at the end he asked what I would like him to play at the end of his DnB DJ set on main stage. I said 'Ready To Fly' by Sub Focus, because it is the ultimate DnB banger. It turns out he did play it! I also met Clara Amfo, she is so nice! We talked about Future Sounds and she said that there is a huge artist on Future Sounds in the coming weeks, who is dropping a comeback single.

In all this is a really well-organised festival. This success is something Dundee should be proud of.

Was really enjoying Rudimental's set on iPlayer until they lost sound half way through (but kept the stream going with an apology at the bottom ). I switched over to The 1975 about 9:30 so I don't know if the sound ever did come back or if it's been salvaged on the upload.

Just watched Wet Leg and that's all I really thought I'd stick around and watch today as I'd spent most of yesterday watching the whole of the Future Sounds sets. Romy was stunning and piri knew exactly how to command a crowd and bring the bangers. Might dip into Becky Hill's set later if I can.

There's word on the Unofficial Mills website that there might not be a Big Weekend 2024 due to all the cutbacks with no references by the hosts to next year's event being pointed out unlike other years.
I’m just home after attending the whole weekend in Dundee, it was unbelievable and easily the best thing I’ve ever been too. Lewis Capaldi was definitely the highlight by far for me, I had to laugh when he was told he couldn’t swear as he’s live across the BBC but continued to do it anyways. All in all a fantastic weekend!
So this is doing the rounds on Twitter tonight following Royal Blood's performance yesterday. I didn't see it at the time but what a shitty reaction to a gig. Some crowds might be "mild" these days but don't be disrespectful to them.

They have literally zero top 40 hits so I don’t know why they expected everyone to know everything about them. Hopefully that’s the last Radio 1 will have to do with them

Is there any chance whatsoever that Kylie Padam Padam could get a playlisting on Radio 1?

There is certainly a chance, it’s hard to predict though.

I'd say almost certainly no chance, unless it becomes such a big hit that it's impossible to ignore - but let's be realistic, that's probably not going to happen no matter how much we're all willing it to! I'm just happy that she's going to get a top 20 hit in 2023 :D
