Was surprised when I heard this playing on Heart last night!

Given it a full first listen and there is something so dislikable about her in the video and I can’t put my finger on it. That said I love how she’s shaken it up a bit by going with a feature for the lead and their vocals do compliment each other really nicely to make it much more instant than LWYMMD and I’m preferring how light hearted and colourful it is!

EDIT: infact does anyone get Sara Barielles vibes from this??

I've listened a few times now. It's not growing on me, but it's not exactly grating on me either. It's still just very cute and for the most part, that's ok. I can deal with that. I think the hook is pretty bland and quite lazy though.

But yeah, I'm enjoying it just not particularly loving it. But it's kinda what I wanted/expected from this. She usually kills it with the 2nd singles though so...

It’s nothing like Next To Me

Next to me-eeee-eee-eee ooh ooh

Me-hee-hee hoo hoo hoo hoo

That’s the similarity, it’s not the whole song. Melodically it’s very similar & that’s the main hook of both songs.

I feel like I've eaten 10 sugar cubes after each listen, times that by 5 after watching the video

I can't believe no one has mentioned the similarities to Sit Still, Look Pretty?! I heard it in the chorus the fit time I heard it

As for "Me!", terrible would be an understatement

I don’t understand the hate for it - the verses kind of remind me of Blank Space a little,

The middle eight isn’t great, but I think it doesn’t help that the video was released at the same time as the song. I really like this though

People are really doing too much here, as always with Taylor  I get people not liking it or being disappointed but I'm baffled by some of the reactions.
I’m baffled too I must admit. I’m surprised that the majority of people dislike/hate it! I feel like they only hate it because it’s Taylor!

Hmm no. Taylor has one of the best musical outputs of the past 10 years, that’s certainly not why me or anyone else I’ve seen say they dislike it.

Quite the opposite, exactly.

It's not difficult to understand that some people might have expectations for a new Taylor Swift single or want her to continue growing as an artist. This is a blatant regression.

the problem is that most of the people hating on it dislike her/have criticized her constantly anyway though. It's just so obvious and tiresome.

I’ve heard this a couple of times now and it’s really awful. Yet still probably better than 90% of the current top 40.

I feel it’s just a really bad/cringy song and if was any other female artist other than Taylor, it would be slated on here.

This just definitely does not deserve this amount of hate. It’s a fun, catchy song that doesn’t take itself to seriously. Sure, it’s made for American radio, but what isn’t these days? It is such an infectious song.

I've seen a lot of criticism coming from people who actually really respect Taylor as being one of this generation's greatest popstars / songwriters. That's certainly the case on Popjustice forum and with a few of us who have replied here (including me!), as well as in some critical reviews. Maybe it's a different story on social media, I don't know.

'Me!' just feels low effort to me, that's my main issue with the song. I don't think Taylor is usually a low effort sort of artist. When listening I just think that she's selling herself short. Certain elements of the song are very "Taylor does Kidz Bop", which isn't what I'm personally wanting from her. I can't help but feel like this is an inauthentic place for her to have reached artistically, 7 albums in and fast approaching the age of 30. Maybe her remit for this song was to appeal to the younger fans who were craving a light-hearted & silly song after reputation, and I suppose in that sense she's ticked the boxes. Maybe the purpose of this song is to serve as a "course correct" that easily slots into playlists & is an easy fit on radio.

I feel I should reiterate that I don't hate the song. Disappointed in it, yes. It's kind of mostly fine I guess. I can't deny that it's catchy, and I'll more than likely listen to it a fair few times. I just know she's capable of better and that's the niggling factor. By better I don't necessarily mean more serious a la Delicate. I'm here for fun pop, just pop that is of a higher standard than "spelling is fun!".

I really don't want to rain on anyone's parade, I also doubt anyone else here is setting out to do that. To the fans who genuinely enjoy 'Me!' and think it's another brilliant moment from Taylor (or even her best moment, gasp), that's great of course. I don't think any critical reactions should detract from that. I will say that I don't think those critical reactions should be dismissed as "they're just being haters, they're doing a bit too much" or whatever, that's kind of dismissive. Positive or negative, it's valid.

Disappointing that she's technically #3 because of OTR's two versions :( But still hopefully a top 3 debut with those numbers and great sales if they hold up (fingers crossed).
