December 26, 20204 yr In a sensible democracy, a referendum on something as important as this would require some combination of 1) A minimum threshold (not just 50% plus one vote) 2) a reasonably detailed plan of how it would be enacted 3) Clear rules to be observed with the power for the courts to annul the vote in the event of a serious breach 4) A confirmatory referendum if the final outcome differed significantly from the original proposal We had none of that We just had a glorified opinion poll. But that’s the problem with the system in the uk. When an MP wins by one vote in FPTP no one complains about the legitimacy to represent his constituency in parliament and potentially the party ticket he stands under voting in a PM. It was the same when the referendum was announced, the nounce Cameron was he didn’t crest these rules but did confirm that the result of the referendum was Inacted. If the same happened in NI following a border poll and the result wasn’t Inacted there would be another civil war!

There was nothing to stop Cameron insisting on a threshold - apart from the fact that it was advisory which meant that a threshold was illogical.
December 26, 20204 yr On the other hand he said the result would be Inacted on numerous occasions in parliament
December 26, 20204 yr On the other hand he said the result would be Inacted on numerous occasions in parliament Boris has lied numerous times in parliament, Cameron could have gotten away with it if he wanted to.
December 26, 20204 yr Boris has lied numerous times in parliament, Cameron could have gotten away with it if he wanted to. I don't think Boris has actually lied but just been a little economical with the truth. Maybe white lies but doubt he intended to mislead Parliament or knew he was doing so as that would be unforgiveable and be a resigning issue.

December 26, 20204 yr On the other hand he said the result would be Inacted on numerous occasions in parliament Not before the referendum. The only mention was in a leaflet which does not override legislation.

To describe him as parsimonious with the truth would be excessively generous. And that’s only referring to the times he is being relatively honest.
December 27, 20204 yr Not before the referendum. The only mention was in a leaflet which does not override legislation. He said it many times in parliament before the referendum, Hansard is your friend
December 27, 20204 yr A major decision like this, a deal unapproved by the people- all happening four and a half years after the vote. We re-elect new governments in this timeframe usually. I guarantee if another referendum was run now (based on our current situation and the deal we have) remain would win- new voters have turned 18+, many many people will have changed their minds given false promises, the shitshow that has been run, the fact that full implications absolutely weren't laid out in the original referendum, and a lot of the leave voters, to put it bluntly will have died out. The public isn't typically given referendums on policies or international relations, it's all so farcical. It is good that we have a deal at least but it's only marginally better than nothing. I really really hope we can work out something like the Norway deal over time but I do worry about the future of this country over the coming decade. And on a personal note travelling (when it's allowed again) will be a bitch.

And on a personal note travelling (when it's allowed again) will be a bitch. Going on vacation and short visits most definitely won’t be a bitch but I cannot WAIT for the surge of “oh noez we like stayed in Spain for like 7 months and apparently I can’t do that now omg I’m just a normal girl from Essex it’s unfair” comedy sketches in tabloids. However, staying in Europe long term will. I would certainly be absolutely pissed off that my rights are being taken away from me. Now y’all will have to actually prove yourself and put in a lot of effort in order to get a decent job anywhere in the EU. I wonder how many people are going to leave for the EU next year and find out they can’t get employed.
December 27, 20204 yr It can be a bitch for holidays depending on what you arrive at the same time as/slightly after. We have to use the pleb queue now. Pre-corona and pre-BER the EasyJet flight from Manchester to Berlin Schönefeld arrived just after a flight from Gatwick, Kiev and Moscow. That’s 300-400 people ahead of you in a passport queue you never used to use. For a lot of brits they gonna moan like shit. Although I’m not so sure it’ll be too bad on the costa del sol where it’s all brits anyway. The biggest change will be the need to apply for a tourism visa when the EU starts it’s ESTA style scheme in the next couple of years
December 27, 20204 yr Sure most of the so called ‘Essex girl’ stereotype used above only work for the summer so it’ll be ok for them too! Not even debating about the rights and wrongs of using the stereotype used. Edited December 27, 20204 yr by Christmasteve201
December 27, 20204 yr Even if he did, that doesn’t override legislation. Obviously the legislation hasn’t been written to well if it’s allowed Tory governments to enact the legislation since then. No one has even discussed the old ‘advisory’ arguement so it’s set in stone and is happening. Also twice since then at a GE people have voted for the government which wants to ‘get Brexit done’ or given them the go ahead to!
December 27, 20204 yr Starting to hear from people from Northern Ireland that packages they ordered are being cancelled due to issues with shipping. It* begins**. *Irish reunification **starts

No one has even discussed the old ‘advisory’ arguement so it’s set in stone and is happening. Also twice since then at a GE people have voted for the government which wants to ‘get Brexit done’ or given them the go ahead to! No. Again, that is due to the UK's DUBIOUS definition of democracy. In both elections, remain parties got more votes :') And as the unionists and Tories always say r.e the SNP, voting for a party in an election is NOT tantamount to voting for their position in a referendum :')
