Looks like people are downloading a lot of movies for their kids in lockdown.

From the OCC

Frozen 2 has a mammoth first week on the Official Film Chart - landing the second biggest digital debut ever. With a whopping 218,700 downloads, Frozen 2 is bested in first-week sales only by Avengers: Endgame, which claimed 335,400 in August 2019. Avengers: Infinity War comes in at Number 3 with 214,300 in its first chart week.

they need to stop counting playlist streams for the album charts, if someone streams the Hot Hits playlist at random

and streams Mabel - Boyfriend, who does this have to give a stream point to her album?

Except logistically it doesn't because the top 2 most streamed tracks get weighed down to the average of the next 8 tracks, and I imagine Boyfriend would safely be outstreaming everything else on her album without these playlists. The point could be made with cases where artists do have lots of songs getting support at the same time (or when the songs in question just aren't overtaking the older, behemoth singles), like say any playlist that's boosting Justin Bieber's "Forever" at the moment, but those cases are relatively rare/minor at least. I do agree though that there's a lot of exploitation of single cherry picking from albums though and a full album stream system would have its merits. On an obvious technicality, Pablo Honey paces relatively close to being Radiohead's 2nd most streamed album, but chuck that top 2 rule in there and it rightfully moves well into last place.

....and the unexpected casualty of the virus is streaming has plummeted 10% or so. Radio is well up. Many things have gone up, gardening websites, online TV like Netflix, pornsites traffic, but streaming is down. That should be telling in terms of why that is. Music fans, you would imagine, would look to music as an escape, reduce stress levels etc. So my theory is it's passive listening that has dropped, playlists as backdrops to other stuff. The next chart should be interesting.......

If the increase in radio includes music stations then it could just be a sign that people prefer to hear a friendly voice as well as music.

I’d agree that it’s passive streaming that’s dropped. Also streaming is not the only way people consume music. I’ve been listening to loads of music since lockdown but it’s all been records and CDs because that’s just how I like to consume my music.

My music consumption has gone up since working from home! The elimination of verbal communication (minus two Teams calls a day) has seen me gravitate towards listening to music all day instead in the background. My mum works in dead silence downstairs though so each to their own!

I'm sure that's true, radio is great company.... :)

me, too. Even when I was revising for exams music was a must. Silence is too distracting and makes tedious things more tedious ...

I would be too if my CD player hadnt gone kaput! I need to buy a new one asap.... :D

Just been looking at entertainment on Amazon - they have rightfully pushed back delivery of entertainment items to focus on essentials however this is going to totally kill the physical market, Dua’s album is available to order however delivery is not expected until May 1st! Same for most others too... HMV and independent stores with online operations are the only places atm that are delivering physical within a few days.
Personally I generally find myself watching more TV when i'm at home. Listen to most of my music during my commute or whilst I'm sat at my desk at work.

Data based on Official Charts Company data analysis of tracks more than 5 years old with the biggest percentage uplift in UK streams week on week, excluding attributable anomalies such as the catalogue of the late Kenny Rogers. Data period analysed first 6 days of week 13, 2020.
Some of those are a bit random - Barbie Girl, Gangnam Style, Love On Top? What have they got to do with the Coronavirus?
Increase in music being streamed to entertain young kids who are home from school is my only guess? (For the first 2 that is, I'm not sure about 'Love On Top', that may just be entirely unrelated)
Some of these songs could just be experiencing boosts due to the nice weather? I'm sure 'Love On Top' is on plenty of feel-good / summer playlists.
One of the things to come out of this for me is the need to support HMV and indies more than ever - Amazon have dumped entertainment and due to the size of their operation and product range is totally the right decision but they have totally cut off the whole music/film industry in the process at a rare time when people might actually be looking for physicals.
I really think this will be the end of HMV and other physical music-focused retailers. Golden Discs are the Irish equivalent, in a much better financial position, and they've temporarily closed here. I'd be shocked if HMV has enough liquidity to stay afloat if they've to close their doors.

Do HMV have any stores there any more?

Yes, well over 100 stores still.

I was asking about stores in Ireland!

Love On Top was also on last weeks feelgood throwback thursday in all fairness

The line "I don't wanna die young" in 24KGoldn's City of Angels is muted on Radio 1 - it sounds very strange missing with it being the main hook of the song!
