Yeah the issue isn’t really the mistakes, which are bad enough, governments make mistakes. It’s the fact that they have just tried to lie their way out of them without anyone taking any responsibility. Anyone who asks the challenging questions is told to ‘watch their time’.

Also it’s so obvious Boris only comes out when he thinks he’s got good news and throws his minions to the wolves for all the bad stuff. He’s bigged up this big Sunday announcement well in advance, they’ve leaked possible changes to the press, the developed governments have said ‘no way is that shit happening on my watch’ and so the government will backtrack on all their plans and Boris will be stood there on Monday with no dates for anything, the most minute changes to the lockdown announced which Scotland and Wales have already announced and he will go on incoherently for a bit to look like a strong leader ready for battle.

Has anyone heard? Apparently the hugely bigged up Sunday announcement will be that....

We can now go out more than once a day and garden centres can open.

Wow.

It’s too early to lift restrictions anyway. The amount of people in hospitals may have reduced but lifting it by any significant amount now will just bring the total back up and it will have been a waste of the past few weeks

You can just bet it was going to be much more, endangering lives significantly but then they guaged the reaction and pulled back.

It’s Boris’ own fault he made a big song and dance about this announcement when he should do what all the other leaders do and spit it out at the right time.

The reinfection, R, figure remains key. It is impossible to know exactly what the figure is but current estimates for the UK are betweeen 0.5 and 0.9. That might not seem to be much of a difference, but it is actually very significant. If the easing of restrictions leads to a doubling of the R figure, that is manageable if the current figure is 0.5. It is definitely not manageable if it is currently 0.9.
I’m glad we will have 3 more weeks at least, it’s too early to lift things. This is coming from someone desperate to get back to a tiny semblance of normal.

No doubt he will do a Trump and claim not to know how people ever got the idea there might be a significant change.

Not that odd. Look how many people here are praising the centre-right Angela Merkel.

I'm certainly not praising her, whilst she got the first wave kind of right because of the lower death figures compared to other big European countries (although of course if she would have banned flights earlier to Italy, China and Iran she could have saved even more lives) it is too early to lift restrictions even in Germany. She should have waited another two weeks at least.

I just worry how many people will assume the lockdown is 'over' when realistically, we can't be doing anything making some minor easing like going out more than once a day etc. I'd expect this ridiculous sensationalism from rags like The Sun, but even the BBC yesterday had a headline along the lines of 'lockdown to be eased on Monday'. Ugh.

well, street-party of sorts planned here (albeit observing 2m distancing) - I'm not attending.

Supermarkets have long lines of people today - I'm assuming it's for booze.

As the rags and the government have contributed to the "we may be easing Lockdown" mood as flags are out on houses in force, everyone is rah-rahing the spirit of VE Day, I'm going to remind everyone of the utter hypocrisy of celebrating those who died and suffered during the War - while not giving a shit about them dying in their hundreds in Care Homes.

Apparently more interested in those that have already died rather than those who've been left to die through arrogant apathy that Herd Immunity was a thing.

They are still dying daily in large numbers, but sure job done all sorted, let's have a party. Maybe we can give them a funeral with some flags on.

I don't even like the idea of celebrating war with booze and flags. It should be a time of quiet contemplation and RESPECT FOR THOSE WHO FOUGHT WHO ARE STILL LIVING!! STAY INSIDE AND GET THE CAREHOME OUTBREAK UNDER CONTROL!!

Agreed, it doesn't help. But the Government can't control the media and it's obvious the likes The Scum, Daily Express etc. want to use the media to pressure the government in to easing lockdown. I'm all for sticking the tooth and nail in to the government where is's right, but can someone exactly tell me where is has been stated by the government we would be coming out of lockdown on Monday? They have never said that. Clear as mud we will be in "lockdown" for another 3 weeks imo and the presentation on Sunday will be a roadmap until September.

Most business groups have been consulted on the plans but nobody really knows what they will announce as a definite.

I'm interested in all the pyschologocial stuff out of this. Human behaviour is very strange.

If the government cannot control the media, then they must simply start communicating better with their own public, kind of like what Wales and Scotland have done. Why do England have to wait until Sunday for something that’s probably already been decided? Despite what has been said already there will be idiots expecting lockdown to be over on Sunday because Boris’ appearance has been needlessly bigged up. Where are the media getting the idea that lockdown will be eased from Monday? From Boris’ actual mouth!

You’ve been telt repeatedly that it is a bloody useless measure.

Skiers, aged 18-40, returning from Italy and Austria before we knew it was a problem who then went to Karneval and clubs and other things are the source of Germany’s outbreak. Shutting down flights wouldn’t have changed a thing, it was already in country before it was enough of a problem in Italy or Austria to prompt any action. It’s not so much shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted but shutting the barn door after someone burned the barn down and killed all the horses

Merkel is the only world leader who is a trained scientist. She’s the one leader I would trust endlessly on this and I’m so thankful to be here in Berlin for this. We are less impacted than many other European nations, are testing like theres no tomorrow and have an R0 that is firmly under control with a healthcare system that has a wealth of capacity. There’s more spare capacity in German hospitals than the NHS has normal capacity. We can cope with a relaxing of restrictions, our restrictions haven’t been as firm as other countries and it feels like we’ve done as best a job as we could have

Agree with this completely also the amount it plays into people's mental health who suffer from anxiety is looked over. I know people who have not been able to stop thinking about it, clear and concise information needs to be given more frequently. This three and a half week bollocks isn't working evidently.

This Tory government and the media go hand in hand, so what one says the other is - at the very least - thinking
Problem is the government are being lead by public reaction. People get restless and other countries loosen restrictions so they think ‘right we’ll hear them up for a Boris speech to give them what they want!’ They feed non concrete plans to the media to speculate and then go off a general public response which this time means that it’s too soon. They’re not leading us, we’re leading them. Since the beginning of this crisis, this is what it has been like. That first week, when we should have locked down, every conference they did was a reaction to the criticisms from the one before.

Why do we have to wait for anything that's been decided? Probably because of strategy and maximum impact. Plus VE Day and the Bank Holiday. Jesu,s can you imagine if they had announced anything yesterday, it would party central this weekend. It's bad enough as it is without some half arsed announcement. Secondly announcing it today would be disrespectful imo. There's an argument to make the announcement Saturday too but who knows.

Look I am not a massive from of Boris nor this Goverment but I don't think they have actually said lockdown will be lifted? People interpret what they want to hear from statements. I agree coming out with a fixed date and saying we will make an announcement on 10th May for example would have been very helpful. The PMs appearance has been bigged up because it's the Prime Minister. When we have other Ministers doing the briefing it's akin to supply teachers. Again, if Boris was more visible I think the message would have been better placed to be put across.
