I think like most people already alluded to, the announcement of the trace system was hastily put together to try and contain the media. Which it probably did succeed in doing.

Interested to see where the Cummings story goes from here now. The police have said he’s broken the rules but the Government have said no?

Trace & Protect in Scotland has gone live today and stage 1 of the reopening is starting from tomorrow. Quietly getting on with the day job

The entire cabinet is now untenable. None of them should remain in post having backed a law breech at such a crucial period of time. Gov of national unity then new elex pls

And of course, thus far, the BBC are reporting this as ‘Police say Cummings MIGHT have broken lockdown rules’

That’s because that’s what the statement by Durham Police says. ‘concluded that there might have been a minor breach of the Regulations that would have warranted police intervention’

Yeah, it's not exactly a showstopping statement -

No 10: The police have made clear they are taking no action against Mr Cummings over his self-isolation and that going to Durham did not breach the regulations. PM has said he believes Mr Cummings behaved reasonably and legally and he regards this issue as closed

Looks like the government are hoping this will draw a line under the matter, sadly I fear they are probably right. As I said on Saturday - Cummings thinks he's 'untouchable' - on this evidence, he is.

The use of contact tracers was intended to be a supplement to the famous app. Now that there is no sign of an app in the immediate future, these contact tracers are supposed to go ahead anyway. These people, with the minimum of training, are supposed to cold-call people and tell them to self-isolate for fourteen days. I suspect their script hasn't been updated to advise them what to do when people mention Cummings.

Furthermore, the calls will only start when somebody has tested positive. Most of those tests are likely to be administered by post. So, make that (at best) one day for the test to arrive, another day for it to be sent back (not sure how you are meant to post it back if you are already self-isolating) and another day to process the result. I am assuming the result will be communicated electronically so there is no additional delay. The contact-tracing is supposed to cover people met in the two days before the start of symptoms (I'm guessing people are presumed to be significantly less infectious before then). That will be five days before the test result (more if the process goes over a weekend, particularly with no postal deliveries on Saturdays). Why, then is the self-isolation period as long as fourteen days, i.e. up to nineteen days (or more) after the contact?

And another thing, will people who are self-isolating get a means of obtaining priority delivery slots for food? After all, most of them will not develop symptoms and will, therefore, have a perfectly normal appetite. How many people can survive for fourteen days without buying any food?

It’s such a downer. I do hope the pressure keeps up but sadly I think it’ll die down now. It’s just astonishing how the public outrage is being completely ignored and all ministers are being so childish about it in interviews and they’re going to completely get away with it.

Cummings is above any police investigations.

My experience of new IT systems being installed in Local Gov is that they always take 3 times longer than the people spouting the sales-BS claim it will take. As long as you sign on the dotted line it's done and dusted - politicians never back out of it cos it makes them look stupid for believing BS, so you have to wait for a change of administration or battle on till it's sorted with regular updated end-dates constantly moved back.

Of course it's perfectly possible this system will be ab fab and it's been totally worked out already, all bugs fixed, and airtight. In which case I will get ready to allow my jaw to drop just in case, Peter-Griffin-stylee.....

At least.

So Durham Constabulary says they're taking no further action against Cummings even though he "may" have broken the rules. Boris now considers the matter "closed"

They say if they'd seen him at Barnard Castle they'd have asked him to go home but would that have been to his parents' of London?

Edited by Crazy Chris

Cummings' son is called Cedd. He is named after an Anglo-Saxon saint who travelled to Northumbria and died of plague after infecting many others.
And "Barnard Castle" means "that's a pathetic excuse". Everything just falls into place.

That's the thing about these c-words, they genuinely think they're untouchable

Honestly, I would've been very hesitant to say something like this a few months ago but f*** them and anyone who still supports them. They're blind. I know their support has dropped but how are 40%+ of the population in favour of this party?

That press conference was something else — the most Trump-like yet.

Awful. Ignored every question about Cummings then said we can all have a family BBQ in the garden, except you then can't use the toilet and have to wipe everything down. Are most people going to follow that? Are they hell. It's so obvious that we are neither here nor there with the R rate. I agree we have to get the economy back up and running, but they have said there will be local lockdowns..
