The Bad Touch is my favourite out of those.

What a week that would’ve been!

We’re lucky these days to get 6 new entries in the top 75.

I miss the days of pre orders in singles charts and having weeks where we’d get a battle for number one in the form of new entries etc.

When was the last time there was a chart battle between new entries? I know Nice For What and One Kiss were released the same week, but I assume it was pretty obvious at the time that Nice For What would win?

I think the problem now is that when there is a chart battle, it's not all or nothing. A lot of the time, like it's Saint JHN vs. The Weeknd, it's just "Who will get one more or one less week at #1?". It's different when there's two (or more) songs and they've only got that ONE chance to reach #1.

The Bad Touch is awful vocally and lyrically imo although I like the Pet Shop Boys style instrumental the others are very good especially Flowers and Blow Ya Mind.

how much did Fool Again at #1?

EDIT: found it, 82K... so would have been pretty close if Flowers did 80K

I think Never Be The Same Again wasn't far behind them so Flowers possibly would have only made #3 the week before, it would have been close.

That week was actually a pretty competitive 3 way race iirc.

I think the lyrics in The Bad Touch are exceptional, but I do think the song was mixed... poorly. (I shouldn't say poorly because it's not mixed badly, but it's not up to standard with other pop songs from the time).

I wouldn't ever connect this song to the Pet Shop Boys lol. But I see it now.

Oh come on, how can any song that contains the line "put your hands down my pants and I bet you'll feel nuts" be considered awful lyrically? :drama:

I agree. I'd put the song up there with Shakespeare and the Bible, and I really mean that.

Yes, Flowers would have ended up at #3 if it was released in that particular week. NBTSA sold 81,300 in its second week.

The Snake, obviously

Other New Entries in the Top 40 were:-

24. Lonestar - Amazed

The start of an amazing (by 2000 standards) chart run: 24-23-30-36-32-30-28-26-21-23-22-22-21-26-30-35-37-42-51-57-64-73.

Why did this have a chart run like that in 2000? Was it due to different promo slots or was it just because it wasn't supported commercially(except likely on radio 2 at a guess?) and just picked up sales as it's support grew naturally?

Great chart run though - Beautiful by Snoop Dogg/Pharrell had a similar chart run a few years later defying the natural high first week peak as it wasn't supported on radio 1 but was a brillant funky track.

Great top 10 that week - Lock N Load & Rank 1 in the top 10 at the same time!! Thought Steps were huge enough then to debut at the top spot?

That is genuinely one of my favourite ever lyrics :D

Much better times for music and chart action. Especially for popular music, you really had tonnes of variety in 2000. All the dance genres were thriving from house, to garage, to trance, to euro. You still had rock hits, pop music had it's own identity and sound, urban music was doing better than usual but not to the point of it dominating everything, and you even had quirkier genres like trip hop and ambient making a dent in the charts.

Ah the days when listening to radio was enjoyable, and following the charts was entertaining and nail biting.

Best song in the top10 was definitely Rank 1 - Airwave

I miss those days as well. It used to be fun to see how frequently the iTunes chart would change after each 30 minute update and following the progress of newly released singles and if their pre orders were on an EP then seeing how the individual versions would climb up the chart. And of course all of that contributed to weekly Official charts that always felt fresh. It would have been extra interesting to see how things would have looked like in a chart climate like 2000.

Streaming has definitely taken the buzz away in more recent years.

Garage songs in both of the top 2 slots!

You need to keep in mind though:

A) They only ever had two #1s

B) That was a 5th single from its parent album

What a top 10 Never be the same again

Deeper shade of blue is such a Steps classic too deserved to chart much higher than #4!

Also "Stomp" was a lucky #1, with its low sales tally

They were more of an albums act 3 of their original albums were million sellers and one double platinum, plus they had huge tours, one of their tours was the highest grossing U.K. tour at one point. Obviously Heartbeat / Tragedy was the exception being a huge million seller but even that took its time to climb there was a slow steady burner.
