There were far too many occasions in the chart history of S Club 7, S Club Juniors and Rachel Stevens when a song which would otherwise have been top of the charts was denied by a superior single at the time. Which were deserved and which should have made way for the runner up?

Eiffel 65 – Blue (Da Ba Dee)

Held off S Club Party in 1999.

Westlife – I Have A Dream / Seasons In The Sun

Held off Two In A Million / You’re My Number One in 2000.

Sonique – It Feels So Good

Held off Reach in 2000

Enrique Iglesias – Hero

Held off You in 2002

R. Kelly – Ignition (Remix)

Held off Say Goodbye / Love Ain’t Gonna Wait For You

S Club Juniors

Sugababes – Freak Like Me

Held off One Step Closer for one week in 2002

Holly Valance – Kiss Kiss

Held off One Step Closer for one week in 2002

Gareth Gates – Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake)

Held off Automatic High in 2002

Las Ketchup – Aserje (The Ketchup Song)

Held off New Direction in 2002

Rachel Stevens

Black Eyed Peas – Where Is The Love?

Held off Sweet Dreams My L.A. Ex in 2003

Here’s how I’ve rated the songs;

+10 Holly Valance – Kiss Kiss

+9 Shapeshifters – Lola’s Theme

+8 Black Eyed Peas – Where Is The Love?

+7 Sonique – It Feels So Good

+6 R. Kelly – Ignition (Remix)

+5 Eiffel 65 – Blue (Da Ba Dee)

+4 Sugababes – Freak Like Me

+3 Las Ketchup – Aserje (The Ketchup Song)

+2 Enrique Iglesias – Hero

+1 Gareth Gates – Anyone Of Us (Stupid Mistake)

–1 Westlife – I Have A Dream / Seasons In The Sun

I honestly prefer most of those number ones!

the only ones I’d swap out are Westlife and Gareth Gates (I suppose R Kelly as well for other reasons but I prefer Ignition as a song over those two S Club songs)

for all the impact it had Reach deserved at least one week at number one too but I wouldn’t want it to have prevented Sonique peaking there.

Sugababes, BEP and Last Ketchup ( :kink: ) all slay <3
Holly Valance, Shapeshifters, Sonique, Eiffel 65, Sugababes and Las Ketchup  honestly can't be mad about most songs that blocked them!
Most very much deserved. Those are classics, those are classics

Apart from Effel 65 & Gareth Gates, I prefer them all to the S Club songs! Don’t recall the Two in a Million though

There’s some BIG songs there!

Black Eyed Peas and Shapeshifters 100% deserved the #1 tbh but Reach definitely deserved it more than Sonique!
Freak Like Me and Kiss Kiss are my favourites from these for sure  Lola's Theme also great! Less keen on Blue and Where Is the Love though.
Ugh Black eyed peas, couldn't stand them back then and still don't care for them
How could I miss Sonique though. Incredible song and deserved 15 weeks at #1. Sorry SC7 etedfg35tgf1.png
Sonique was one of those rare times when both the number 1 and the number 2 deserved number 1 :(

Blue (Da Ba Dee) vs S Club Party

I much prefer S Club Party, certainly nowadays but also at the time as well - even though I did enjoy Blue in 1999. I completely understand why Blue was a massive hit, but I don't particularly like it any more. No idea when I would have last heard Blue, but I can actually remember its verses as well as the chorus, so I must have heard it a fair few times back in the day! So my preference for #1 would be S Club 7, but I don't begrudge Eiffel 65 for making it instead.

I Have A Dream / Seasons In The Sun vs Two in a Million / You're My Number One

Absolutely S Club 7 with this one. Honestly I have never understood why that single was so huge for Westlife... for me it's by far their worst single out of their first 4 releases, but unfathomably it was their best seller at that point in their career. I suppose it was fortunate that S Club 7 even reached #2 with this though, considering it went 5-6 in its first 2 weeks on sale.

It Feels So Good vs Reach

It Feels So Good is a dance classic and I love it, but Reach feels like even more of a classic to me - and it's actually outsold Sonique's song now!

Hero vs You

I never particularly cared for Hero, it's so schmaltzy. You is pure cheese of course, but I prefer it!

Ignition Remix vs Say Goodbye / Love Ain't Gonna Wait for You

I've always considered Ignition to be overrated trash, long before R. Kelly was firmly cancelled. It would have been lovely for S Club's swan song to reach #1.

Freak Like Me vs One Step Closer

Had to go with Sugababes here. Funnily enough One Step Closer actually outsold Freak Like Me in 2002, so arguably it deserved #1 over it...

Kiss Kiss vs One Step Closer

...particularly considering it managed a second week at #2, going ahead of Sugababes. Kiss Kiss is fabulous though, one of my favourite singles from 2002 - Holly absolutely deserved the #1.

Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake) vs Automatic High

Gareth's best song, but Automatic High is a lot more fun and would have been a very cute summer #1.

Aserje (The Ketchup Song) vs New Direction

Obviously Asereje is bit of a classic, but I don't particularly like it... whereas I love New Direction and consider it to be S Club Juniors' best single. Would have loved it to be #1.

Where Is The Love? vs Sweet Dreams My L.A. Ex

A nice song from Black Eyed Peas and worthy of its success, but... Rachel had one of the best pop songs of the decade and it deserved #1, damn it!

Lola's Theme vs Some Girls

Lola's Theme is cute if a bit overrated. Some Girls is a corker, it should have been #1.

Almost all of those deserved number one over the S Club tracks to be fair, even Westlife! :D I think Anyone of Us beating Automatic High is the only one worth swapping.

Kiss Kiss and One Step Closer is probably the campest top 2

S Club and Rachel did face some absolute classics tbf - Westlife should have rolled over for them!
