In actual Coronavirus news two bits that I found interesting today:

Firstly, the vaccine data with Oxford University looks very positive. Obviously lots of challenges along the way, but people who know far more about scientific papers etc. than me have all said the data is really promising and it looks likely to be a winner.

Secondly if the information Vallance said today. It looks like SAGE recommened a total lockdown on the 16th March, but it took until 23rd March for it to be implemented. It will be interesting to see who gets thrown under the bus for this later in the year.

My money's on Hancock. Reckon he'll be shuffled out of health and made the scapegoat though not all his fault really. Certainly can't see him getting a higher cabinet role under Boris. I remember when some were predicting him for one of the four Great Offices Of State, other than PM.

Johnson's political capital has been well and truly spent, so I wouldn't be surprised if he eventually gets the blame. Even though the Tories are still in the mid-40s on polling right now, when the grim economic reality hits come the autumn we will see that plummet. Regicide is still the ruthless method that the Conservatives use to hold on to power (see: May, Thatcher etc.) and that is why we have seen Rishi Sunak limbering up for what I'm sure he hopes will be a pretty imminent change of leader.

Yes I think it'll be Sunak V Starmer at the next election but there won't be a change in Tory leadership until just before the election.

It's not just Tesco, it's the coffee shops, convinence stores, traders in train stations/tube stations, petrol stations.. then this has a knock on effect on big suppliers who provide the produce and are losing sales. People save but then they don't spend and this creates a deficit.

People will go back to the office for certain, but I'm struggling to see big employers making it mandatory for everyone to work in the office 5 days a week which is going to have a knock on effect

Exactly people waste their money on shite going into work.

I'm saving a fortune working at home too!

Quite, if there's a section of the economy that can only live off selling office workers overpriced goods with little choice, then it should go. And be replaced with something more useful to a society where far fewer pointless commutes are taken. Office culture getting replaced by a work from home culture has a lot of benefits to the environment and family life and we'd all be better off.

The more people have saved, the more institutional power they have to avoid getting suckered into consumerism. Spend your money on things that deserve it.

Really does seem like Whitty & Vallance are at odds with the Government and their current advice.

If they are talking of a return to normality by Christmas it sounds to me as if the Phase 3 data for the vaccine looks good they're just going to go straight to scale with a mass production after 3-4 months of data rather than waiting 12 months. I'd question why the Furlough policy isn't be extended until the end of 2020 if this was the case.

I am exempt. Have a GP's letter as wearing one gives me added stress. I can still take an interest in the subject though. She says she's done dozens of letters but you've to have long-term mental health problems and not just suddenly magic them up which she says some are now doing, faking stress etc.

Could you still wear a face shield?

He would t have lasted long during the blitz would he?

For the last few weeks, local authorities have been protesting that they don't have the powers to introduce local lockdowns. The government disputed the claims. Yesterday, they announced that from today councils will have new powers to introduce local lockdowns. Naturally the government hope that people don't spot that this is effectively an admission that they were lying before.

In a separate announcement, it has been announced that people who accepted vouchers after their holiday was cancelled will be able to claim the value of the vouchers even if the travel company goes bust. It's a shame this announcement wasn't made months ago as it would have saved a lot of hassle and, possibly, encouraged people to accept the vouchers and help the travel company survive.

I feel like I still need an answer to this question.

Could you please stop making fun of my mental health problems. It's not big it's not clever and it's downright rude.

You should think yourself lucky you don't have them.

So apparently when school comes back in Scotland on August 11 there'll be no social distancing AT ALL between pupils and I'm not sure how I feel about that tbh, it seems off.

That’s the case within their bubbles (of 30) in England and Wales from September. Can’t enforce bubbles with Key Stage 4 and above though as they all do different subjects.

Children supposedly don’t transmit the virus as much as adults who are still advised to be socially distant.

I do have many different problems but you know what I just get on with it as best I can and try and do the right thing.

Same as me really. I try to do the right thing wherever possible. :)

If someone with lungs f***ed to high hell who will need a lung transplant in their lifetime can wear a mask. So. The. f***. Can. You.

Imagine endangering someone with f***ed up lungs during a respiratory pandemic because you don’t like wearing a mask?

I got the train down to London yesterday. I won’t lie the first 15 minutes were absolutely horrendous with wearing a mask, but once you got used to it it was absolutely fine. I can see why people have concerns but I also think it’s the fear of change really. I think people will adopt them in the cities pretty easily, maybe your smaller towns might be a little bit more of a challenge.
The only issue I've had with a mask is that my facial hair makes it even hotter underneath. But thats such a minor inconvenience that I don't even notice it till I take it off and feel the fresh air
I wonder how people coped with gas masks back in the war...
