Where did you see that? I thought Sainsbury’s are making it mandatory from 24th with the governments guidelines

Someone on another forum says there was a lady stood outside theirs telling everyone it's from Monday.

Not sure how it'll be enforced. I don't think it's fair to get shop staff to also have to stop people coming in for not wearing a mask. I assume police will help with the enforcement by patrolling busy shopping areas. People will unforuantely get confrontational about it. But if it stops people going to the shops full stop I'll be happy. So many people still not wearing masks currently in my local shops.
I'd say management and shop security will be on the doors of those shops who intend to enforce it strictly and will call police if they get any backlash. I take it this includes small shops too, like newsagents and off-licences. Wonder how strictly they'll enforce it. If I was an owner I wouldn't risk getting my head kicked in.

The police are saying they don’t have enough officers to enforce this. My guess is that enforcement will be fairly light at first before steadily increasing it. If so, that could mean that compliance is high by the time we get the anticipated increase in cases in the autumn and winter.

omg i'm not wearing a mask. how dare they?! it's discrimination what about my rights i guess no going to the shops for me i'll starve to death it will be all your fault!!1

i love how each time there's a TINY inconvenience these people are all 'RIP our rights let's piss in the streets and blame immigrants'. first world white privilege.

The whole thing about bars, shops etc. "is it safe?"

No. Nowhere outside is safe. That's the entire point of living during a pandemic. Even if you're masked to the gills and sanitizing every 5 minutes if you go to one of these places you might catch it and if you catch it you might die.

This is what the government and the population of the country need to get through their skulls. But you can just tell it won't take for some people until it tangibly hits home through actually happening to them.

Yeah but what's the alternative? We all just stay locked up for the rest of our lives? The risk is there but its relative. There's always a risk of being hit by a bus every time you leave the house but you can't let that play on your mind every single day.

 that's the problem with out society there's to many rights and not enough responsibility

As Laura Pidock tweeted yday summing it up perfectly:

'Many people on the right struggling with compulsory mask wearing, even though the evidence shows it benefits us all, are really disgruntled because they struggle with collectivism, doing something for another. It is all me me me. Not we we we. It is political.'

It's all part of change management and the change cycle. Similarly for myself I don't necessarily want to wear a mask but if it's been decided that everyone wears one to keep as many people safe as possible then I support the change. Especially when in reality it will only really affect you consumers for a small amount of time.

Unless it’s only for some Sainsbury’s

Can someone tell me why customers should have to wear a mask yet shop-workers don't? It's totally unfair and is being talked about lots today. Had Radio 2 on at lunch-time and Vine said it really is ludicrous. Am sure many shoppers will turn around and tell the managers "well why isn't he or she wearing a mask then?" Rightly so. Health workers have to wear them all day.

It's an interesting debate and one I am not too sure on. I've seen it suggested that certain staff are protected by plastic shields etc. - which is all very well and true but what about people stacking shelves? Or self service checkouts?

I think it is likely to do with the compromise that office workers won't be expected to wear one so as not to create a divide perhaps. Does seem a little bit counter-intuitive.. but I don't think it's feasible to ask someone to wear a cotton mask for a shift either.

It didn’t take you long, did it? Aren’t you exempt from mask wearing anyway?

I haven’t been in any shops bar supermarkets since lockdown but my Tesco has plastic shields and in my Spar they have plastic visors. I imagine this will be the case in most shops.

Everyone in Scotland is wearing a mask when they are out at the shops already. Just put the mask on, it is hardly going to damage your ego?
I can only guess that shop staff are exempt because of how long they would have to wear a mask and the fact that they would have to take it off for tea and meal breaks.
Chris, just wear a mask ffs!

I am exempt. Have a GP's letter as wearing one gives me added stress. I can still take an interest in the subject though. She says she's done dozens of letters but you've to have long-term mental health problems and not just suddenly magic them up which she says some are now doing, faking stress etc.

Yes but what about NHS workers? Same for them. You can't have one rule for them and another for office and shop workers.
