The first three songs here are INCREDIBLE BANGERS and I won't hear any bad words about them. And then... it largely falls apart. What did they think releasing 'Turn Up The Radio over 'I'm Addicted'?

Away from the opening trio, the run of 'Love Spent to 'Beautiful Killer' is good too and I like 'Best Friend'.

And then there are some HORRORS including the worst offender of them all 'B-Day Song'

The album is a HOT MESS with some genius moments but ultimately it's not cohesive or consistent, has no vision and just seems like a total cacophony of largely generic sounding ""bangers"". Fun but not essential.

It probably gets a harder time than it deserves from Madonna fans. If another artist would have released this, I don't think it would receive some of the hate that it does, but Madonma set the bar so high that anything less than incredible just wouldn't cut it.

I like every track up to Love Spent. It should have been a 10-track album (or let's include Masterpiece and say 11). Should have gotten rid of the rest!

This is her weakest album for me.

I don’t mind Gang Bang that much and I enjoy the run from tracks 10-14 (Love Spent, Masterpiece, Falling Free, Beautiful Killer, I F***ed Up). (Haus it’s so funny how often we think the same regarding things I just seen your post above saying something similar  )

It’s odd that two of the best tracks on this were deluxe / bonus tracks only though. And I think the singles released were quite poor compared to the album. I can see why Gimme All Your Luvin was lead as I imagine they thought the featured artists would help her with a younger audience and radio play perhaps but I think she should’ve led with Gang Gang as the shock Madonna lead moment and then followed up that with Masterpiece winning over adult contemporaries etc.

But like Haus says the lack of vision kinda makes this feel like a non Madonna album there’s it much of a theme to it and again it’s not really like she’s setting trends but more following them. But unlike Hard Candy it’s not produced well enough. I think the features as well here aren’t really natural feeling. Madonna will always be better on her own but Hard Candy’s features felt way more natural than this albums did.

However my biggest issue with this album is the over editing on her vocals and the way it’s produced. I think it gets a hard time though and I’m hard on it  it probably is more because of her high standard than anything else. If I had to erase one studio album from her discography though I’d lose this one first hands down.

This is her weakest album for me

I do however love Gang Bang and Love Spent

Masterpiece and GGW and IDGAF are also decent.

Gang Bang should have been the first single !!!

I also love I f***ed Up !!

I just completely resent the fact that 'Turn Up The Radio' was released and 'I'm Addicted' wasn't :( Maybe she saw the latter as too controversial in terms of the subject matter and the former is super-safe (in a negative way mind). Ugh, this era could have been great with some of the fat trimmed away and a different singles campaign. Although saying that GMAYL and GGW are songs that represent the era very well in terms of sound and lyrics and in that respect "deserve" to be the first two singles, so I don't think there was any way she could've made this album a hit.

A lot of young people (I’d say may maybes 18-22 year olds) tend to really like this album I’ve found on twitter.

I just think it’s a bit behind the times though which is rare for Madonna. There’s a solid 7/8 track EP you get from the tracks on this but as a whole it’s easily her weakest album. It’s just a bit jukebox like and doesn’t really have much of a vision. It’s kinda like a debut album in a sense where you’re figuring out who you are and are trying to get success by using a sound others have had success with etc.

This should have been the singles run =

I'm Addicted
This would have been far better to represent the album with its cool electronic sounds that sounds that Madonna can still be very current, yet harks back to the sounds of her previous decades & along with its unexpected poetic lyricism, this could have easily been a success (more so than 'GMAYL').

Gang Bang
Not only a highlight on the album itself, but a highlight of her career. This really could have caused a stir along with a cool controversial music video to boot, this would have got people talking & gained more interest & sales for the album. Revisiting the role of a scorned lover across a dark throbbing beat, with a gritty dubstep breakdown, this could have been something epic.

Masterpiece
Slow things down with a surprise ballad, with its poetic lyrics and gorgeous orchestration, definitely one of the best moments on the album & shows another side to all the chaos of the first 2 singles & plus if given an actual music video & a proper push, this could have driven more album sales.

Girl Gone Wild
Either this or "Love Spent" could have closed the era on an almighty high with this booming club banger with its fast beats & a killer chorus which makes this a very memorable number & a frim album highlight.

This is widely regarded as her worst album. Like, 'Hard Candy', I'm going into this album with the expectation that I'm going to have a very unpopular opinion on this, but let's see! Singles wise, I *think* I can only remember hearing 'Give Me All Your Luvin'' & 'Girl Gone Wild' before. 'Masterpiece' (by name) I can't remember if I have! LMAO.

'Give Me All Your Luvin'' and 'Girl Gone Wild' are solid bops! Even amongst all the other albums I've heard by Madge up to this point, they stand out to me. I never thought I'd give praise to a song named 'Gang Bang' but here we are... A BOP! In regards to 'Turn Up The Radio' being a single... I get why they went for it, but it honestly feels like an unfinished demo. So I'd probably have gone for 'I'm Addicted' over it.

GMAYL is such a banger, idec. So far this album is decent and it's interesting to see how my opinion varies considering it's so widely regarded as her worst album and so far, apart from it being a product of it's time, I'm liking it.

My halfway through the album opinion is... I'm not hating this. Sure it's throwaway and doesn't feel like a Madonna album, but I don't mind it (even if I know I'll probably not go back to anything beyond GMAYL).

Oh yes! I HAVE heard Masterpiece. It's lovely!

1. Gang Bang

2. Girl Gone Wild

3. I'm Addicted

4. Masterpiece

5. Give Me All Your Luvin' (feat. Nicki Minaj & M.I.A.)

6. Love Spent

7. Superstar

8. Turn Up The Radio

9. I Don't Give A (feat. Nicki Minaj)

10. Falling Free

11. Best Friend

12. I'm A Sinner

13. I f***ed Up

14. Beautiful Killer

15. Some Girls

16. B-Day Song

As I said earlier, largely a product of it's time. 'Gang Bang' and 'Addicted' are brilliant. 'Love Spent' is interesting. Maybe it's just more interesting than it really is. 'Superstar' is cute, if inessential. 'Falling Free' shouldn't have followed 'Masterpiece' and maybe it would have had a bit more impact. The production on 'Some Girls' is... a choice. Genuinely sounds like a robot trying to fart in a lot of it. I get '911' by Gaga vibes on that song though (but ofc Gaga's is the version SG tried to be), but that may be just me. What in the KATE NASH is 'B-Day Song'? I like Kate, but the songs that this song reminds me of, are NOT IT!

So yeah. I actually didn't HATE this album. It's just extremely faceless and beyond the top 5, I doubt I'd go back to any of it (not that I particularly disliked any of them - bar the bottom 2). Just a very "meh" and "of it's time" non-Madonna, Madonna album. In fact it does remind me of Britney Jean (one I think gets a harder time than it deserves, but at the same time, I completely get and understand why it's viewed in such a way).

Album Rankings:

01. Confessions On A Dancefloor

02. Ray Of Light

03. True Blue

04. Erotica

05. Like A Prayer

06. American Life

07. Music

08. Madonna

09. Hard Candy

10. Like A Virgin

11. Bedtime Stories

12. MDNA

I’ve just bought this album on CD for I think the first time! I found it for like £2.37 on ebay and thought I may as well have all her studio albums. I was certain I actually bought it at the time :P

I’m probably due another listen of this to see if not hearing it for a long time makes it sound any better

Also just realised today this was her final to date #1 album here I hope she gets another one soon!

When this went to #1 it was her sixth studio album to go there in a row too. I don’t think anyone’s ever done that before female wise have they? Taylor stands a chance if her next album goes to #1 though.

OMG Andrew you seriously need a full Madonna discography listen if anything from this album is near the top 50

Jordan! Why can I see this being Andrew's favourite M album once he listens to them all?

! If it's generic dance-pop, it probably will be :cheeseblock:

(Still haven't got round to that oop)

The album that ruined her career, she's never been able to come back from it (although that could have been Hard Candy tbf as this is the aftermath of that album). Terrible album tbh, a few catchy tracks but nothing groundbreaking it's all rather generic and basic. The trailblazer Madonna was no longer in existence (again Hard Candy may have been the start of that).

The correct top 3 for sure, and last place, but Beautiful Killer is too low

MDNA is not a great album for me. That and hard candy are by far my least favourite Madonna albums. Girl gone wild was just daft and sounded like a little girl singing. The only songs I like on the entire album are masterpiece, falling free and love spent.
