Neither of us will have the vaccine in a million years. Wife's employer, who is a scientist, says vaccines usually take years to develop so this that's been developed in weeks rings alarm bells for her. They won't have it and neither will we. Too much is unknown about it. Look at Thalidomide in the 60's. However her sister, who is a busy London GP, says she'll have it and recommend that her patients do too. She's already being asked if she thinks it'll be safe though.

I assume the take up will be very high but some like us will refuse it.

Aw man, get away with this bullshit. The vaccine has been worked on for Months as Rooney already said and that is common knowledge. There have been numerous articles about it for a start which if you Googled you would see. Mass vaccination is going to be the only way out. And that's that I'm afraid.

If everyone had listened when the first lockdown ended, we'd be in a far better position now but as it stands, I can see vaccination being mandatory.

Absolutely no way they will make the vaccine mandatory, not a chance.

Anyone who is at risk should be actively encouraged to take the vaccine yes but it should never be enforced.

It's actually not possible for the government to make the vaccine mandatory, but imagine if everyone was as selfish as Chris and Nita. We'd very likely have the virus running rampant through the population every autumn/winter and overwhelming the NHS.

I get that you are concerned about the safety of the vaccine, but the vaccine wouldn't be signed off if it wasn't safe.

The fact that it took 9 months is an incredible achievement, the best estimates were 12-18 months but this is 2020, the virus only first appeared in humans in late 2019 and yet scientists had sequenced the whole genome by late January.

My favourite one is drug/steroid users saying they don't think the vaccine is safe, but will willfully blow their body with whatever they want to increase muscle growth

Someone I know who is EXACTLY like that posted a big long rant on Facebook when the news emerged about how he won't be injecting the vaccine into his body. It's utterly ridiculous.

Yeah or people will laud themselves with KFC, Maccies etc. with no idea on the e numbers etc. - but oh no I won't take a vaccine which might save my life and others

Moderna trial is interesting. I don't think the UK currently have a contract with them to secure any early manufacturing, but iirc the technology they use is the same as the Oxford one, so if they are at 95% then you would imagine Oxford would run very similar.

I don't understand how anyone would be against getting vaccinated, how else is Coronavirus going to go away once and for all? The virus is not going to say after a year "ok I've had my fun now I'mma head home"

As long as the side effects don't kill you it's worth it. The behaviour of the anti-vax people just makes me think that if they want Corona so badly they and only them can get it as long as no one else does once a vaccine is out for the public.

Yes, from what I've read the technology is the same as the Pfizer/BioNTech one.

Apparently, the government are still negotiating price. I can't help feeling that price will now have gone up. That's not really surprising. With so many trials going on, no government is going to want to take a punt on all of them.

As for the safety, as long as there is no hint of government interference, we have to trust the usual approval process. One of the reasons to be thankful for Harold Evans, one of the greatest journalists of my lifetime and who died recently, is that his commitment to expose the Thalidomide story led to changes to the regulatory system. It is never possible to guarantee that nothing like Thalidomide will happen again, but the fact that nothing like it has happened in the last 40-50 years should give us confidence.

Yes, it is only natural to be cautious when a vaccine has been developed in record time. However, you have to take into account the number of people who have been working on it (with at least some degree of co-operation) and that some of the stages which would normally have been done sequentially have been done in parallel in order to speed things up.

These muscle queens just miss getting coked out and clubbing every Saturday :(

If they are also smokers and alcohol drinkers then it's twice as funny.

It's not safe to eat processed food, it's not safe to consume a lot of sugar, it's not safe to breathe in the polluted air, it's not safe to go outside as you can literally die at any moment by a freak (or not so) accident. The whole argument is just plain stupid.

If they tried to make it mandatory they'd have so many legal challenges and appeals lasting years. So it would take many years to become mandatory as there'd be one appeal after another.

Was reading last night that some employers may decide you can't enter your workplace unless you have a vaccination certificate. :o Some retailers may also require this though nothing's been planned as yet. Also pubs and restaurants. It's just rumours. Yes, it may be not mandatory but as they say you can be stopped putting your fellow workers, shoppers etc at risk.

*Whispers* - MMR.

Yes I know it's supposed to have been disproved but some parents of kids with autism, we know two, are utterly convinced the MMR vaccine caused it.

It has been disproved. The original "study" was unscientific nonsense.

My parents, who I’m now convinced have descended into madness due to lockdowns, tell me they won’t be rushing for a vaccine either. I’m currently explaining to them that I will do what I have to in order to return my life to normal because I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to live to work and not much else. My dad thinks he knows it all because he has a Genetics degree but I keep reminding him that it is 40 years old. My mum I think will cave as she swings from believing we’ve massively overestimated the virus to furiously scrubbing all of her groceries.

One would strongly suggest that you use your ample leisure time to equip yourself with the facts.

There is no link. None. Zero.

Yes I do know the facts and have read them but I am just saying that we know of two families with autistic daughters in their 20's now who think it was caused by MMR. I couldn't care less whether it was or wasn't but you can't dismiss what they believe.

I think it's an insult to them to say they're "mad due to lockdowns"for being cautious about the vaccine. Ridiculous thing to say. Do we know that all politicians, scientists and celebrities will have it when their turn comes? No. I'm fine about people having it and conversely would like us not having it not to be ridiculed either. Hey we'll save the tax payer some money after all.
