We have a hard lockdown starting from today (our 7 day per 100k figure is still lower than the UKs and has been pretty much since February) as Merkel finally managed to win the argument with the heads of states (who actually are the ones with the power to lockdown, not the federal government) and the measures were apparently agreed in an hour. Usually the heads of states call lasts for a good 7-8 with a handful of the rural eastern/northern states with lower rates vetoing harsher measures.

However, the regs differ slightly from state to state which is lightly irritating. Berlin has an overnight alcohol ban and a ban on leaving your residence without good reason although we do not have to fill a form out like the French did. The Christmas relaxation applies only on 24-26 and includes a temporary lifting of the ban on hotel stays so that people travelling for Christmas can stay in a hotel; 5 persons from up to 5 households or I think no limit on numbers if it is immediate family gathering (parents and siblings etc) but am not 100% sure my translation on that one is right.

We also have a sales ban on fireworks, but not a ban on setting off ones you have bought except in certain areas of the city. Alcohol sales are forbidden from 2pm on the 31st until 6am on the 1st 😱

Wtf are they trying to do to the country opening and closing all the time?! I’m not convinced that any of these COVID restrictions actually have any effect either way and it’s just unfortunate that it’s winter/flu season.
I’m not gonna lie, I have just broken down. I won’t clog the thread about my mental health and that of my family but all I can say is that I feel my life is expendable to save other lives right now.

I’m sorry to see this. It has been clear that you have felt under stress all term. I hope you can get to see a GP over the Christmas break for some help and advice.

Oh sorry to read this. Thought it was coming as you've been on the edge for a while now. Try and talk to a GP before Christmas as Suedy said.

And does that Welsh lockdown have a specified end date? Cos that's always the BIG bugbear. Like the second England lockdown wasn't too bad as there was an end date to mentally prepare for but the first one was hell on earth.

It will be reviewed 3 weeks after. It’s a load of rubbish, if they actually wanted numbers to fall they would close schools.

Thanks guys, I’ve had a bit of a meltdown this afternoon as I’ve mentioned in another thread but I think I’m ok now. I’ll be off next week and I’ll see if I can get to see a GP.

Boris has said "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas and this year I mean LITTLE." LOL. the advice stays the same then with 5 days respite. Wait for the third wave in January.

Sorry to hear this TBoy, hope the break can give you time to refresh.

Yeh the social media nonsense about ‘oh Sweden isn’t in lockdown and it’s fine’ like across some imaginary border a virus acts differently! Just using that argument to push their own agendas.

Got my flu jab this morning, I feel peculiar...I feel like I’m in a Buble.....

Ructions where my wife works yesterday and she says it's still going on today. Bearing in mind we're in Tier 3 now, the 15 year-old wants two sleep-overs, tomorrow and Sat. Fathers's said she's not going and mother, a softer touch, says she can. Other parents have said yes. She's supposed to be on 14 day isolation after sitting next to a girl in school who tested positive last Friday! So she's had a test and is negative. Never good when the two parents disagree is it. He has parents in their 90's and they're supposedly going there for Christmas. The girl said "I hate rules. I want to do what I like"

Also the guy told Nita that he's not happy that she travels by tube a couple of days a week as she has a free travel pass now and wants to save a bit of petrol money. He says her own car's far safer and he'll give her the petrol money.

So much aggro. :( I'm keeping out of it all and trying to limit my supermarket trips now. Got a Tesco delivery for Sunday tea-time.

I’m due March-April according to that but I would hope education staff would see some sort of priority given we can’t work from home.

Millions can't work from home though. TV and Radio, delivery workers, warehouse, power, phone, shop workers, nannies who go to other houses, people like my wife who clean houses, the list is endless so where do you start?

Sorry to hear T Boy about your mental health struggles. I must admit, I think as a whole while education is vitally important to children, it is really clear that schools being open is having a massive effect on community transmission. Reading the Tories suing governments over moving to online learning - it's crazy really. We have a huge problem and it is a worldwide problem, but it really does seem as if we either have to close everything and have schools open or we have schools closed and have some things open to balance out the risk.

I lost my dad unexpectedly on Sunday and I'd hate for people to give this Christmas up and then have their loved ones die next year. The human cost of this pandemic is cruel, but at the same time you just know we are going to be going in to another 4 week lockdown in January.

I hate to be judgemental too but in September/October, the view was that covid was a north problem and not in the south. So maybe the reality is during lockdown, people in south east etc. let their guard down and then that's how the spread started again. Or you have had everyone return home from uni in early December and that's what is helping cause the spread now..
