May 10, 20214 yr It's the increase in international travel I am concerned about more than pubs or hugging. https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2021/may...scientists-warn Although yes I would prefer if pubs had more outdoor seating with parasols if it rains rather than opening indoors yet, pubs aren't really known for their good ventilation really.
May 11, 20214 yr Supermarkets, or public transport to the supermarket? My point was that it was a polite fiction all the way through the winter that the elderly were 100% obeying the rules to the letter and somehow still being struck down by covid in their hundreds a day while sheltering 100% of the time alone in their homes getting supermarket deliveries that were prioritised and ringfenced for their demographic. The reality is that all along a percentage have been continuing on as normal, toddling up to the shop, seeing their friends, having people round, babysitting and so on, and then playing the shock card when they happened to pick it up. The refrain in too many of those covid victim articles is "but I didn't think I would really be at risk!" coming from people who clearly from their pictures are in at least 2 or 3 if not more of the at risk categories that have been shouted from every corner for the last 14 months.
May 11, 20214 yr Got my second jab next Friday, 21st. Wife's got hers on Sunday. Heard horror stories of people having awful side effects with the second one when they had none, just like us, with the first.

May 11, 20214 yr Nice to see the EU catching up. The sooner Europe (and the rest of the world) is all vaccinated the better! Totally agreed, it's paying dividends in our country too and I suspect once you get past the Over 40s it's really hard to make solid headway in to the rest of the groups. Seems it's happening in the US too so no doubt it will be in the EU once they get down the ages.
May 12, 20214 yr So two interesting things to note imo -the case numbers seem to be slowly rising again. Again, with the population of vaccininated adults it will be see what happens with this, but the numbers have been steadily increasing and probably means we're on about 4k per day cases taking in to consideration asymptomatic cases. They also reckon the Indian variant is even more transmissbale than the fabled Kent variant, so it looks like it may be a bit of a rush now to see who wins first with vaccines or cases. Public inquiry in to Covid is happening too which is due to take place in Spring 2022. There were some rumblings of an early election call for the Government but unless they surprise us and go for the latter half of 2021.. cannot see them calling an early election now.

Would be incredibly hypocritical for Tories to call a GE until covid is properly over since they say that due to covid there can't be a second Scottish Independence referendum. Mind you that is exactly the thing they would do (and get away with).
May 12, 20214 yr Did they move to get rid of the fixed terms parliament bill as part of the Queens Speech yesterday?

That promise came one day after Johnson promised that it would be set up by the end of the year. Admittedly, he didn't specify which year but people could be forgiven for assuming he meant 2021. Did they move to get rid of the fixed terms parliament bill as part of the Queens Speech yesterday? Yes. We'll be back to the mad system whereby one of the contenders gets to fire the starting gun.

The rise in unvaccinated adults showing that Wales' more risky approach of running down stocks and vaccinating all of the 18-49 age group at the same time looks to have been the right one. The rest of the UK currently sitting on a stockpile of nearly 12m doses including ~5m Pfizer which will predominantly be for first doses. Why the other nations aren't getting those into arms asap I don't know - the EU export ban threat no longer exists and the UK is currently receiving a steady flow of vaccine doses per week (more than it's administering at present).

Not sure on that one, I can only assume it's to do with the MRHA ruling. Still doing 500k jabs a day which is impressive, but looks like it might be a little bit of a race against time. Suspect June 21st is going to get pushed back in any case.
May 12, 20214 yr Our current tempo is 750k per day, it fluctuates wildly from 250k on a Sunday to the 1m+ we did yesterday (a new Tuesday record; today’s data could be a record breaker as we usually peak on a weds). Mainly because GP practices are the driving force of our programme now and they’re shut at weekends. Our vax centres do about 300k a day on average Currently forecasting that 80% of Germany’s 83m population will be vaccinated by the first week of Sept. Which is pretty remarkable. On the first of April it was forecast for March 2022 And that was on a lower 70% bar!! The tempo rapidly picking up here is really chilling me out and giving me some hope.
May 13, 20214 yr Someone has at least taken the sensible decision to begin 'surge vaccination' in Blackburn to all over 18s due to the outbreak of the Indian variant there. Hopefully the other areas with Indian variant outbreaks will follow suit. It sounds as though Andy Burnham is pushing for surge vaccine supplies for Bolton too.

At this point it is worth testing it as all the infection spread is in the under-25s seemingly. I'm sure someone at SAGE will say it should be used as a strategy across other areas with high infection rates. I've just got my text to grab a vaccine (later today) and I'm well under 38, so I imagine as usual different places are going at different speeds.

I did wonder why they didn't implement a system to allow all 18-49s to be vaccinated via a booking service. Especially as all those vunerable in the 18-49 age group would've already been vaccinated. It's better to get the vaccines administered ASAP as opposed to sitting on them. I do think we'll see a pickup in vaccination rate now though, particularly with community transmission of the Indian variant happening. Today was the highest number of first doses administered since March 31st.

I wonder if they went for 18-49 it would be too much to cope with. Think it's better to go down the age groups, but possibly in 10 year gaps rather than 5 year ones. But looks like the local PH strategy differs by nation.
