Yeah I get that, but what do you tell nightclub owners etc. It’s easy for us to sit here and criticise but it must be awful if you work in the late night entertainment. I’ve said before I think it’s mad that masks will be dropped, and likewise the PM and Chancellor have turned round and self-isolated which was a massive misjudgement and a complete kick in the teeth to millions of others. I’m just of the opinion if we can’t open up certain industries now, we’re never going to be able to open them up and it’s not financially viable to keep stringing them along.

I still think there are a bazillion different ways they could have tackled in.

Here in Iceland for example, bars and pubs mostly stayed open but with reduced opening hours(ex. 10 or 11pm instead of 3 or 4am at the weekends - yes Icelanders are nightowls!) And max people limits e.g. 20 or 30, table service so that people weren't going up to the bar brushing shoulders with each other.

The result? Yeah we've had a smattering of cases here and there but nothing like whats happening in Europe or the UK right now. In addition to a fast robust vax prógram alongside those restrictions - 85% fully vaxxed, we're in a relatively good position.

And yes, Iceland has a much smaller arguably managable Population than the UK, but the point still stands. This is why all the shoulder shrugging and "oh well we tried" doesn't wash with me.

Have never seen as much despondency and negativity on a forum. It's well past time for everything to be lifted. People want BBQ's and friends round and more than sodding 6! We're having one Friday for about 15 people. AT LAST. If you want restrictions to continue then self-restrict as they've said. Stay in, get supermarket deliveries, don't meet anyone. Simple really but let the rest of us get back to normal now.

Went out Friday and no-one on the bus had a mask on and not many in Asda either. LT has never enforced the wearing of them on buses anyway. More so on the tubes.

You allow them to open up but keep social distancing measures and mandate that anyone entering a club or bar etc must show proof of vaccination or a recent negative PCR test. Rather than this half assed "measures are gone but please be careful" nonsense. You could also impose number limits based on size of the establishment or restrict hours etc. There's really no excuse.

But this the point. Here in Reykjavík things pretty much are back to normal BECAUSE we had these restrictions in place and opened gradually.

Whats going to happen in the UK now with this approach of everything open at once(which literally NO OTHER Western nation is doing) is massive infection(already happening) and death and then lockdown will be needed AGAIN.

We can live our lives and enjoy ourselves whilst learning to live alongside Covid(which hopefully will become much less problematic in the long run) but this idea of oh well it's all over now...no, just no.

We can't put our lives on hold I agree, but we need to get out of this mondset of Covid is done, because it isn't and won't be for a while.

How do you mandate that though? It’s bad enough queuing for a club/bar at the best of times, no matter having to then ask people to provide ID. Just don’t see that as viable personally. Not saying I agree with the messaging from the Government as I don’t, but I also feel a lot of people don’t really understand the logistics of enforcing the measures.

I’d be for forms of vaccination passport btw but just don’t think it’s going to happen, at least not on a social level for everyday activities. I’ve complied all the way through, I’m double jabbed, have no problem wearing a mask but it’s like will this ever stop? There comes a time and place where you lose the majority of the people.

Can we at least stop dumping all the UK in as one? Only England are dropping everything tomorrow and in Wales at least there is no end date for masks.

Exactly! It’s only England that are doing this whole lifting everything at once, clearly the other nations ministers have some common sense and are easing more gradually/waiting a bit longer.

It’s really f***ing easy. Most of the continent has been doing it for months. At one point in April I was showing negative tests to enter Saturn and Ikea.

If half a continent can adapt to it without breaking a sweat what makes the Brits so special

err officially 130,000 dead, that's why, probably much more than that, and that's with just a small proportion of the country actually catching Covid. You feel safe having been jabbed, fine, go out, mingle with everyone else, it's only about 1 in 20 likelihood that you'll catch it after being jabbed - but the risk increases as time passes from your second jab. I won't be shopping at Asda ever again BECAUSE they don't enforce mask wearing, I stopped about a year ago when twats were ignoring mask rules, social distancing and shoving their way in front of those who were while Asda did nothing about it. I've been on a London bus and watched the driver sail past a kid at a bus stop for not having his mask on at the bus stop, so yay to the driver. They have a right not to be put at risk if London Transport (like Tesco and Sainsburys) don't wish to put their staff at increased risk.

As a consumer, I will support companies with sensible policies and avoid those that don't care. Hopefully, everyone will vote with their wallet and give those companies with a laissez-faire attitude and with a declining income something to consider.

It's a redundant feature with cases this high for every day events. I see the merit for 'high risk activities'.

Cases sky rocketing across Europe now with some on even steeper trajectories than the UK started with. The UK is just weeks ahead, this Delta strain is a bitch although I hope other countries don't learn from our strategy as I don't agree with it fully.

Apparently Johnson was going to do a speech on "Freedom Day" summoning the spirit of Churchill with victory over the virus. FOR PETE'S SAKE IT'S NOT 1945 IS IT

But instead he's cowering inside having to self isolate after trying to worm his way out of it by trying to go on some pilot scheme to avoid it and then lying about trying to get out of self isolation.

Yes, he's working in a 'limited capacity'.

Thousands of anti-vax & anti-lockdown people are protesting at Parliament Square on the day when restrictions have been lifted. You couldn't make this shit up!

They're just absolutely bonkers, Twitter is awash with them. You can have fun with some of them until they get bored and block you

isolation is so f***ing annoying. My flatmate did a covid test on Thursday and got told she has it... i haven't seen her in over a month and won't be back for 8 days into her quarantine, yet when i go back to the flat, i have to isolate... even though she and i won't come into contact and the only room we would share is the bathroom.

So either i quarantine for 2 days(?!!!) or book a hotel.

We need anti vax passports to go into clubs (but only from September which is nuts as virus ain't gonna wait). That'll give the anti vax idiots something to riot about although it looks like they hardly need one.

Apparently I got pinged. I assumed it pops up on your phone (it doesn't, you have to open the app, which I didn't need to as I didn't go out at all except to Tesco on Friday). Best guess one of our carers came down with it after coming last Tuesday, and set it off as my phone was 2m above her head in my bedroom. Or an NHS worker friend of the family visiting on the Monday while on holiday. No secret, I'm sure, but NHS staff are turning off the app to avoid getting sent home from work as everyone and their horse gets pinged.

What could go wrong....?

You should have gotten a push notification if you’re pinged by the app.

Ridiculous. September you will need to show vaccine proof for clubs, but not now... If they had annouced previously that it would happen on the day most restrictions would be lifted (Say back in May/June), there would likely have been a lot more younger people getting vaccinated by now. Instead they can now go in with a negative test over the next 6-8 weeks...

I'm glad vaccination is being opened to some children (12+) but I see no reason why it can't be open to all.

As always, disappointed by the announcements.

I've also seen a lot of places quite full coming home from work. Sadly I feel we're going to see cases go sky high the next week or two. I just hope we don't see a new variant emerge given the millions of new cases likely to occur in the coming weeks. :(
