August 3, 20213 yr Scotland will lift most of it’s remaining coronavirus restrictions from August the 9th, including the reopening of nightclubs and away fans fully being allowed back to stadiums! Face masks will still be mandatory and remain the law in all indoor public spaces like shops, public transport etc for some time to come. Not sure how this will work with pubs/clubs as you can’t be expected to wear a mask in a nightclub but this is technically still an indoor public space? It’s for the best if you wear masks for clubs in Perth
August 3, 20213 yr Yeh the government has likely told them to wrap it up and just keep an eye on hospital admissions so the news doesn’t focus on infections most of which aren’t affecting people as badly due to the vax being delivered to more and more! I have no doubt in my mind that's something the government absolutely would do, but if that's what they're actually doing I don't see how they could keep it on the down low without it at least being reported somewhere?
August 3, 20213 yr Author To be fair, hospital admissions are starting to show signs of peaking now; it looks to me that whilst flare-ups will continue to occur and transmission in the community will remain very high for some time, the successful vaccine rollout will prevent any major issues for the forseeable. That isn't to say getting transmission down shouldn't still be a priority, just that we're in a relatively good position and daily test numbers probably won't be a good indicator as to the severity of any new wave.
August 3, 20213 yr It’s for the best if you wear masks for clubs in Perth Funny guy😂 I’m happy with the easing here but just worried that we’ll get locked down again in a month or so when cases sky rocket. All depends on if the vaccine does it’s job and the hospital admissions stay low.

All depends on if the vaccine does it’s job and the hospital admissions stay low. Can't see cases sky rocketing yet. I think the big test will be when schools and unis go back, which I think is in about 2-3 weeks in Scotland? Similarly it will be the big test here in England too. Like Doctor Blind posted, I suspect we are over the peak of the 3rd wave in the UK. Fingers crossed we get the booster jabs sorted for the vulnerable and healthcare workers and then we may have enough natural immunity & vaccine immunity to get us through the autumn and winter without any major restrictions. Personally I think there is a lot to be positive about, seems all the scientists are happy too. Cautious optimism!
August 4, 20213 yr Yeah unis going back will be the big challenge. Remember this time last year when cases were absolutely nothing (and that was with ZERO vaccinations) then as soon as September hit shit massively hit the fan.
August 4, 20213 yr 16 and 17 year olds to be offered the jab in line with changed JCVI information. While I am fully onboard with this- not sure where I sit with 12-15 year olds. The data seems very murky, seems the benefit of vaccinating this group is to society rather than to the individual.

I assume Wales and NI will be doing the same some time in the first half of August then, I'm really not looking forward to the inevitable rise in cases it will create. As for the last point, they could try to encourage the use of face shields in nightclubs, still allows you to drink and provides a bit of covid protection, not as good as a mask obviously but better than nothing. August 4, 20213 yr Wales are due to go to that level on Saturday. I’m not sure why you think cases will soar after the three devolved nations drop restrictions given they haven’t with England who actually dropped more restrictions.
August 4, 20213 yr Face shields offer as much protection from Covid as jumping naked into the North Sea in December does against hypothermia
August 4, 20213 yr Anyone choosing to go to a club at the present time does not have *that* much concern for Covid surely. The one I've frequented most often is (pre-Covid, but I'll find out if it still is in about 16 days) so packed out that you have to force your way through loads of sweaty bodies to get to the bar or the toilet...face shields wouldn't make a world of difference with how cramped it is. Not sure how this will work with pubs/clubs as you can’t be expected to wear a mask in a nightclub but this is technically still an indoor public space? I always have a drink in my hand when I'm in a club so I guess they can get around it on the basis that masks can be removed to eat and drink?
August 4, 20213 yr Face shields offer as much protection from Covid as jumping naked into the North Sea in December does against hypothermia THANK YOU! Not only that, they also look utterly ridiculous. I despair whenever I see someone walking down the street wearing one.
August 5, 20213 yr Face shields are the most useless thing ever. They only protect you if someone sneezes or spits all over your face...
August 5, 20213 yr It’s been confirmed by the Scottish Government that masks WON’T be required in nightclubs and when on the dance floor. I mean it would be literally impossible to wear one anyways especially if you are drinking, plus even if they did no one would listen when they’ve had a drink in them.
August 6, 20213 yr Wales confirmed to be moving to level 0 tomorrow. Masks still to be worn on public transport, at medical and health care facilities and in shops.
August 6, 20213 yr The guardian has an interesting article about the vaccine rollout. 6 EU countries have now overtaken the U.K. in terms of numbers vaccinated and there has been a massive decline here in new people being jabbed.
August 6, 20213 yr The guardian has an interesting article about the vaccine rollout. 6 EU countries have now overtaken the U.K. in terms of numbers vaccinated and there has been a massive decline here in new people being jabbed. That's in part due to a number of EU countries vaccinating those 12+ years old. The UK haven't approved vaccination for 12-15 year olds yet and 16/17 year olds are only just now being invited for the vaccine.
August 6, 20213 yr The EU has said for a while that its a marathon not a sprint and that’s why they weren’t paying too much attention to the initial big gap to the UK. It’s been predicted for a while now that the EU would eventually catch up with the UK, especially with the UK having a wider dosing window than the EU so our 1x vs 2x gap is smaller. We also have the one dose Janssen in use which is helpful. It’s great to see that we have readily available stocks all across Europe now. Just wish some of the younger age groups take up was higher across all the west. But we desperately need to get Africa and the Caribbean vaccinated. There is a really good argument for not vaccinating the under 18’s and instead prioritising getting under vaccinated parts of the world jagged

There is a really good argument for not vaccinating the under 18’s and instead prioritising getting under vaccinated parts of the world jagged The alternative is to allow pharmaceutical companies around the world to manufacture the vaccine. The US and France are in favour of allowing that to happen without companies having to pay heavily for intellectual property rights but other countries, with the UK and Germany among them, are opposed.
August 6, 20213 yr Completely agree but it’s easy to say we should waive patent protection but like the mRNA ones need a lot of tech that places just don’t have yet so by the time that’s built it’s 9 months later. Really this should have started a year ago and these companies should have assisted or been obligated to do it in return for the healthy government grants they got to dev this tech.
